Power Trip

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Power Trip, Foreseen, Red Death, The Pose @ Palisades
Texas’ Power Trip, DC’s Red Death and FInland’s Foreseen all make killer crossover thrash, so if you dig that kinda stuff, this is a pretty amazing bill.

Total Control, Lust For Youth, Sannhet, Flesh World @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Total Control’s Mikey Young is touring-adverse (he is a very busy mastering engineer among other things) so this short tour they’re on is pretty rare. NYC is lucky with two chances to see them. Who knows if they’ll tour again? Don’t miss out. And if you’re going, get there early for Flesh World who you can catch twice tonight (see below).

Flesh World, Survival, La Cruor, Scully @ The Acheron
Jess Scott, formerly of Brilliant Colors, is still writing C-86-style scratchy/jangly pop, but guitarist Scott Moore (Limp Wrist) brings a snarling punk edge to the mix. They’re great. After their MHOW show with Total Control they head to Bushwick for this late-night show.

Out in the Streets Fest @ Vander Ende-Onderdonk House
This is the third year for this two day festival which features mostly local bands but happens at the lovely and historic Vander Ende-Onderdonk house. Mr. Twin Sister headline tonight.

Duran Duran @ The Capitol Theatre
Yes, they have a guest-filled new album, Paper Gods, but let’s face it the newest song most people want to hear from Duran Duran is “Ordinary World” with the biggest excitement reserved for prime ’80s MTV hits like “Planet Earth,” “Rio,” “Hungry Like the Wolf” and “Save a Prayer.” And to see them in a relatively small spot like The Capitol Theatre will surely be a treat for fans who bought these pricey tickets.

X @ City Winery
L.A. punk icons X are here for three shows at City Winery; sadly guitarist Billy Zoom is battling cancer and couldn’t make the trip but part of the proceeds of these shows will go towards his medical bills.

Taylor Mac, Brooklyn United Marching Band @ Prospect Park Bandshell
Playwright and actor Taylor Mac presents a taste of his “24 Decade History of Popular Music,” which is “a politically-charged, enormous-of-spirit and outrageously entertaining romp through 100 years of culture as seen through songs that range from Tin Pan Alley to the birth of rock ‘n’ roll to disco and beyond.” It’s free.

Lazyeyes, The Teen Age, Dead Stars @ Rough Trade
Lazyeyes and The Teen Age just put out a split cassette and have been on tour together. Tonight’s the homecoming show. If you dig, melodic dreamy pop with a little bite (plus ’90s-style indie rock courtesy Dead Stars) do check it it out.

Weird Al Yankovic @ The Paramount
Weird Al finally won a long-overdue Grammy this year for Mandatory Fun, and is now out on his “Mandatory Tour.” Expect multiple outrageous costume changes and all the hits.

Summer Thunder w/ Jonathan Toubin, The Baby Shakes, Mighty Fine, PMS and the Moodswings @ UnionPool
Jonathan Toubin of Soul Clap fame hosts today’s edition of Union Pool’s free afternoon Summer Thunder series, featuring a lineup of groovy bands. PMS and the Moodswings, by the way, is a new band featuring members of Habibi and the Nouvellas.

Steely Dan & Elvis Costello @ PNC Bank Arts Center
Steely Dan get top billing and a longer set (sorry Elvis Costello fans), but both have been delivering sets crammed with favorites. This doesn’t sound like a bad way to spend a Saturday at all.

Tiga, Bob Moses, Gavin Russom, Via App, Frank & Tony @ MoMA PS1 (Warm Up)
Warm Up continues with long-running Montreal producer Tiga in the headlining spot, up and coming Canadian dark pop duo Bob Moses, and more. Jaako Eino Kalevi was supposed to be on this one too, but had visa issues.

Dr. John and The Night Trippers, Amy Helm @ Central Park SummerStage
The legendary Dr. John saw his 40+ year reinvigorated this current decade with the release of 2012’s Dan Auerbach-produced Locked Down. He since followed it with a Louie Armstrong tribute album last year. Expect stuff from both of those, and some classics too. This is a free daytime show (3 PM start).

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Teen Men @ Bowery Ballroom
Remember back when it was a thing that bands would be called “blog rock”? CYHSY were one of those bands, thanks to the quick success of their blog-hyped debut. The blogs have been less kind to its followups, but for anyone who wants to relive those mid-2000s days, the band are playing the debut in full on this tour. They’re at Bowery Ballroom tonight and tomorrow.

The Slackers @ Rocks Off Concert Cruise
The Slackers have been cranking out their brand of ska for over two decades, and tonight they’ll do it on a boat.

Full Moon Fest @ Brooklyn Mirage
This EDM-centric fest is back in a new location, the apparently gigantic Bushwick warehouse space Brooklyn Mirage. French pop artists Yelle headlines.

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, Joy Riding, Portuguese Band @ The Studio at Webster Hall
SSLYBY have been putting out peppy indie pop albums on Polyvinyl for ten years now, their latest being this year’s The High Country.

Lordz of Brooklyn, Meyhem Lauren, The Wilding Incident @ Gramercy Theatre
You may not hear about them as much these days (their last album was 2006), but former Brooklyn staples Lordz of Brooklyn are playing this NYC show with the great newer Queens rapper Meyhem Lauren and The Wilding Incident (featuring Sacha Jenkins of The White Mandingos).

Goldie, Doc Scott, Lenzman @ Slake
20 years ago, Goldie released Timeless, an album which helped introduce ambience in drum & bass and prominently featured live vocals from Diane Charlemagne. The title couldn’t have been more prophetic.

Fox Millions Duo, Black Pus, Ryan Sawyer @ Secret Project Robot
They’re both in lots of projects, but Fox Millions Duo brings Liturgy/Guardian Alien drummer Greg Fox together with Oneida/Man Forever drummer Kid Millions for a whole lot of percussive talent.

For all of tonight’s shows, and tomorrow’s, check out our NYC concert calendar.

For laughs, check out the NYC Comedy calendar too.
