Hot Chip

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Hot Chip, Georgia @ Webster Hall
Coming off their strongest album arguably since The Warning, UK dance act Hot Chip hit Webster Hall for their first of two shows, tonight with fellow Domino recording artist Georgia.

The Avengers, Shellshag, Surfbort @ The Bell House
San Francisco punk greats The Avengers — which still feature founding members Penelope Houston and Greg Ingraham — are heading to the UK for a short tour but are kindly stopping here on the way there.

Stan Ridgeway @ Joe’s Pub
Both with his band Wall of Voodoo and on solo albums, Stan Ridgway is a vivid storyteller, bringing a noir style (and a distinctive vocal style and harmonica-playing) to tales of love, lust, unhappy accidents, procrastination, ghost marines in Vietnam, urban ennui and other subjects. Will he play “Mexican Radio,” “Camouflage” and “Ring of Fire”? Probably.

KMFDM, Chant @ Irving Plaza
Long-running industrial titans KMFDM invade NYC tonight. Fun game while you wait for them to go on: make up your own version of what KMFDM stands for. Here’s one: Kylie Minogue Fries Doughnuts Menacingly. We’re not especially good at this game, btw.

J. Cole, Big Sean, YG, Jeremih @ MSG
J. Cole’s out on the road supporting his late 2014 release, 2014 Forest Hills Drive, and he’s got some pretty great openers: Big Sean, who made his best album yet this year, krazy Compton rapper YG, and alt-R&B standout Jeremih (who also makes this show worth it on his own — he really doesn’t tour enough).

Incubus, Deftones, Death From Above 1979, The Bots @ PNC Bank Arts Center
We wouldn’t normally get excited about an Incubus tour, but alt-metal bashers Deftones and dance-punk greats Death From Above 1979 on one bill sounds like a pretty great way to spend a night.

Brandon Flowers, Donald Cumming @ Terminal 5
Brandon Flowers’ new album isn’t great, but it’s better than you might’ve guessed a solo record from the Killers frontman would be in 2015. Plus, you’ll hear a few from his main band tonight too.

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Letts @ Prospect Park
Prospect Park hosts a night of mindie folk from Edward Sharpe and veteran New Orleans jazz from the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

FOLD Festival @ Martha Clara Vineyards
Nile Rodgers conceived of this acronymed, two-day festival (“Freak Out, Let’s Dance”) that promises lots of cross- pollination between performers (today Beck, Pharrell Williams, Keith Urban, Chuck D, Eric B, GTA, Paloma Faith, The Martinez Brothers, Thomas Gold and Rodgers’ band, Chic) and nothing but the hits.
