Caribou

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Caribou, Sinkane @ East River Park Amphitheater
While Caribou’s albums have gotten more electronic/dancey, the live version is still very rooted in performance with Dan Snaith often taking a seat on a second drum kit. Opener Sinkane has played in Caribou before, so don’t be surprised if he joins them tonight. This is a free SummerStage show, Sinkane is on at 7 PM and Caribou is at 8 PM.

U.S. Girls, Yuck, EZTV @ Pier 84
It’s the final Hudson River Rocks show of the summer with an ecclectic bill featuring the hooky, ’90s-ish indie rock of Yuck, and the twisted/chopped Motown of U.S. Girls. Brooklyn janglepop combo EZTV were just added to the bill. Free, doors at 6 PM, EZTV at 7, Yuck at 8 and U.S. Girls at 9.

Desaparecidos, The So So Glos, Bandroidz @ Webster Hall
Desaparecidos finally followed their 2002 debut with a new album, Payola, this year. Not only is it a great followup, but it’s easily Conor Oberst’s best work in ten years.

(the) Thurston MoOre Baand, Chain and the Gang @ Bowery Ballroom
We still miss Sonic Youth, but at least all the members are keeping busy and continuing to make good music and tour. Tonight Thurston’s back in town, and it’s a good double bill with Ian Svenonius’ band Chain and the Gang.

Philip Selway, Adem @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Just one of those nights where you have to decide between a member of Sonic Youth at Bowery Ballroom or a member of Radiohead at Music Hall of Williamsburg. Philip’s debut solo album had him exploring folky territory, but his newer Weatherhouse is closer to the art rock of his main band.

Deerhoof, Blasteroid, Really Big Pinecone @ The Bell House
Long running experimentalists Deerhoof remain an arty indie rock dynamo live, thanks in no small part to the boundless energy of singer Satomi Matsuzaki and drummer Greg Saunier.

The Velvet Teen, Vasudeva, Caravela @ Knitting Factory
The Velvet Teen were one of the more underrated bands of the mid-2000s (possibly for being too weird for emo, too earnest for indie rock), and 2006’s Cum Laude! remains an overlooked gem of that era. They’ve been getting their due a bit more as of late, and this year’s long-awaited followup to Cum Laude!, All Is Illusory, is quality stuff.

Limp Wrist, Didi, In School, Frau, Honeysuck @ Silent Barn (early)

Limp Wrist, Crazy Spirit, Frau @ Silent Barn (late)
Limp Wrist’s Scott Moore just played NYC three times with his great post-punk band Flesh World, but now he’s back for a night of ripping hardcore with his band Limp Wrist. There’s a 7 PM show and an 11 PM show.

Mr. MFN eXquire, Dopplegangaz, Audra The Rapper, Dylan Owen @ The Studio at Webster Hall
If you like the type of rap New York City was known for two decades ago, two of the city’s newer artists, Mr. MFN eXquire and the Doppelgangaz, should be right up your alley.

The Range, Georgia, Ricky Eat Acid, Samantha Urbani (DJ) @ Baby’s All Right
UK artist (and former Kate Tempest drummer) Georgia releases her self-titled album this week via Domino. It’s a funky, eclectic record brimming with ideas and defies easy categorization. This is a free show.

Jon Cleary (and the Absolute Monster Gentlemen) @ MetroTech Commons
The BAM-presented R&B Festival comes to a close with this lunchtime set from New Orleans funk legend Jon Cleary who has played with the likes of Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal, B.B. King, Ryan Adams, and Eric Burdon. Free, noon start.
