Mutoid Man

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Matthew E. White, The Sleepwalkers @ Rough Trade
Matthew E White’s new album, Fresh Blood, is an ambitious affair, with deep shag, string-laden arrangements. While he won’t have an orchestra with him for tonight’s show, White sill swings for the fences.

Mutoid Man, Netherlands, Moon Tooth @ Saint Vitus
Mutoid Man have members of Cave In and Converge, and they do retain elements of both of those bands’ sounds, but mostly this is heavy, bluesy swagger.

MPHO, Suburban Living, Mercury Girls, WALL, Drew Citron (DJ Set) @ Alphaville
One of two notable bands currently calling themselves Mercury Girls, the ones playing this show are from Philadelphia and feature members of Literature and Little Big League and make breathless, sparkling indiepop.

Ducktails, Itasca, Ronald Paris @ Bowery Ballroom
Real Estate guitarist Matt Mondanile’s solo project Ducktails released his new album, St. Catherine, last month and it isn’t too far removed from his main gig. Tonight’s the NYC record release show and it’s worth showing up for Itasca (aka Kayla Cohen), who makes lightly psychedelic, ’60s-style folk. Porches frontman Ronald Paris opens the show.

Strange Names, Color Collage, New Myths @ Fulton Stall Market
South Street Seaport’s multi-use Fulton Stall Market is hosting free shows on Friday. The space is nice, there’s bar and a secluded courtyard…worse ways to spend a couple hours after work on a Friday. Openers New Myths make alluring synthpop and tonight’s also the record release show for Color Collage.

Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs (DJ Set), Jimmy Edgar, Chris Patrick @ Verboten
It’s been a while — three years — since his debut album with nary a word on anything new, but Orlando Higgenbottom (who is TEED) is in town for this weekend’s Warm Up at MoMA PS1 and DJs tonight.

Worriers, Emilyn Brodsky, Adult Mom, Fleabite @ Knitting Factory
Worriers’ new album is catchy, unpolished pop punk (produced by Laura Jane Grace) with lyrics that are as political as they are personal. They celebrate it in their hometown with this release show.

Justin Townes Earle, Anthony D’Amato @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Tomorrow, Justin is opening a pretty cool free show for Watkins Family Hour (featuring Nickel Creek members and Fiona Apple), where that band will be playing Bob Dylan’s Highway 61 Revisited in full. Tonight though, he headlines his own gig in NYC.

Miguel, Dorothy @ The Space at Westbury
Miguel made one of the best albums of the alt-R&B explosion with 2012’s Kaleidoscope Dream, and this year he managed to follow it one that’s at least as good, Wildheart.

Delta Spirit @ Warsaw
This show is billed as “An Evening with Delta Spirit & Friends,” and those are friends are pretty impressive. They’ll be joined by James Richardson of MGMT, Loren Humphrey of Guards, Brian Oblivion, Madeline Follin & Gabe Rodriguez of Cults and Jessica Lea Mayfield.

Jess Williamson, Non Human Persons, Long Beard @ Cake Shop
Austin folk singer Jess Williamson is in town, and if you’re going tonight, we especially recommend getting there early for somber singer/songwriter Long Beard.

Sharkmuffin, Charly Bliss, Lost Boy?, Boytoy, Fruit and Flowers @ Shea Stadium
Tonight’s the record release party for Sharkmuffin’s debut album and the band have put together a solid lineup of similar tough guitar pop bands, including BOYTOY and Charly Bliss.

Corporal, .357 Lover, Mesiko, Soft Gang @ The Bell House
When Michael Shannon isn’t playing creepy loners on TV (Boardwalk Empire) or movies he fronts Corporal, an indie rock band who’ve been at it since the early ’00s. If you dig Pavement and the like, you’ll dig Corporal. This is probably the second night in a row at The Bell House for Shannon, as his favorite band Deerhoof played there last night.
