Daniel Martin Moore

Daniel Martin Moore has a really sweet voice, similar to Sondre Lerche, and very warm and minimalist folky melodies. When he began, the few people in the audience remained seated on the side benches, but as the set progressed one by one they stood up and slowly moved towards the front. Moore was occasionally backed by two friends on a keyboard and mandolin, and his songs were interspersed with a self-deprecating sense of humor and slightly awkward attempts at banter with the audience – who met his words with silence and the occasional nervous laugh except for when Moore asked us if we had any questions for him. Someone replied “what was it like being on MTV?” He simply answered “the facilities were nice”. Moore also mentioned that his music made people fall asleep, which i thought was very fitting for the perceived reception of his show.

That review of Saturday night’s show at Mercury Lounge (1/10) comes from Natasha. Kentucky’s Daniel Martin Moore (he was on MTV?) was the first of four on the bill that also included A Hawk and a Hacksaw and Great Lake Swimmers. It was only this morning while I was writing this that I realized Daniel had an album, called Stray Age, that was releaesd on Sub Pop in October. You can download the title track above.
