You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…
Cat Power (solo), Willy Mason @ Webster Hall
Cat Power’s had a lot of interesting styles over the years, but it’s always nice when she gets back to the stripped-down sounds of her early material. That’s the mode we’ll see her in tonight at this solo show.
Chelsea Wolfe, Wovenhand @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Chelsea Wolfe’s new album Abyss it’s out now and it’s her heaviest yet. Her tour with the great Wovenhand hits NYC for two shows, this being the second.
L7, Fort Lean @ Warsaw
L7 are finally back since breaking up in the early 2000s, and going by their other recent reunion shows they’re still total rock stars. This is their second of two nights in NYC.
Lou Barlow @ Rough Trade
One of the original sensitive indie rock dudes, Lou Barlow bares all on his new, mostly acoustic album, Brace the Wave. Hopefully we’ll get some Sebadoh and Folk Implosion, too.
Christian Mistress, High Spirits, Savage Master, Python @ Saint Vitus
Christian Mistress and High Spirits are two comparatively newer bands who take most of their influences from ’70s/’80s hard rock and metal and do a lot of justice to that era. Tonight’s show should be a lot of fun.
Tashi Dorji, Elisa Ambrogio, Okkyung Lee + C. Spencer Yeh @ Palisades
Avant-guitarist Tashi Dorji comes to NYC tonight in support of his newest album, Appa, and it’s an especially good bill with Magik Markers’ Elisa Ambrogio. Her recent solo album on Drag City is really good stuff.
Scream, Urban Waste, Ache @ Bowery Electric
While Scream may be best known to most people as the band Dave Grohl drummed for before Nirvana, they were a great hardcore band in their own right and chances to see them these days are pretty rare.
Travi$ Scott @ Gramercy Theatre
Longtime Kanye collaborator Travi$ Scott finally put out his own debut album this year, and he’s celebrating with three sold-out release shows at Gramercy Theatre. This is the last one, and a special guest is promised.
The Wonder Years (acoustic) @ Rough Trade
The Wonder Years’ new album No Closer to Heaven pushes the boundaries of pop punk about as far as they can go without losing the thrill that’s specific to that genre. They’ll play two full-band NYC shows in the fall, but tonight they celebrate the new LP with this acoustic in-store.
Say Lou Lou, Phoebe Ryan @ Bowery Ballroom
Swedish/Australian sisterly duo — Miranda Anna and Elektra June Kilbey-Jansson, both models and daughters of The Church’s Steve Kilbey — make slick, Euro-style dancepop that sometimes (like on the Lindstrom-produced “Games for Girls”) is pretty fun.
