The Jesus & Mary Chain, The Black Ryder @ Terminal 5
With it’s mix of Phil Spector melodies and wall-of-noise distortion, no one had quite heard anything like The Jesus & Mary Chain’s debut album, Psychocandy, when it came out in 1985. It’s since become the template for a lot of music, but the band remind us where it came from with these shows playing that album in full.
New Order listening party @ Donna
Get an advance taste of New Order’s first new album in ten years (and first with Gillian Gilbert in 14 years) at this free listening party. You can also get a taste of some New Order-themed cocktails and buy the vinyl early. 9 PM.
Built To Spill, Crosss, Clarke and the Himself’s @ Bowery Ballroom
Indie rock guitar heroes Built to Spill play their first of four NYC shows tonight. Also on the bill: Toronto’s doomy Crosss who are worth catching.
Low, Andy Shauf @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Slowcore/indie vets Low have been consistently great for over two decades, and this year’s Ones and Sixes on Sub Pop fits right in with the rest of their quality material. It’s worth catching opener Andy Shauf, who makes somber folk music that should pair well with Low.
Doomtree, Speedy Ortiz, Serengeti @ Brooklyn Bowl
It’s a pretty cool multi-genre bill with alt-rap from Doomtree and Serengeti, and discordant indie rockers Speedy Ortiz sandwiched in the middle.
The Decemberists, Lucius @ The Capitol Theatre
The Decemberists have both a new album and a new EP out this year. The new stuff’s a bit more straightforward than their prime-era material, but we’ll probably hear some old favorites tonight too.
Voice Coils, Trumpet Trumpet Synthesizer, Hair, Lea Bertucci @ Silent Barn
Local “supergroup” Voice Coils’ best known member at this point is probably Mitski, who doesn’t usually play with the band anymore, but even without her they still make challenging yet accessible indie-prog.
Potty Mouth, Crying, Heliotropes @ Shea Stadium
The Northeast indie rock scene is well represented at Shea tonight with the punky Potty Mouth, proggy chiptuners Crying, and Heliotropes.
Jose James (Billie Holiday tribute) @ Blue Note
Billie Holiday would have turned 100 this year. In addition to being an inspiration for the new Lana Del Rey album and the first artist to “play” The Apollo’s upcoming hologram concert series, neo-soul singer Jose James will perform her music at a series of shows at the Blue Note this week. 8 and 10:30 PM sets every night through Sunday.
Spaceface, Corbu @ Cake Shop
When not playing in the touring band of Flaming Lips, Jake Ingalls fronts his own psych-rock band Spaceface who aren’t entirely disimilar to what Wayne Coyne and co do.
TEEN, White Bike, Luke Temple, Prince Rama (DJ set), Xander Duell @ Elvis Guesthouse
This is the record release show for Xander Duell (aka Alexander McMahon of Inouk) but is a pretty stacked lineup with performances by TEEN and Here We Go Magic’s Luke Temple, all in Baby’s tiny performance area/dancefloor.
Myq Kaplan, Danny Hatch, Ophira Eisenberg, Tim Duffy, Liam McEneaney, Bryan Tucker @ Raaka Chocolate Factory
A pretty sweet lineup of comedians will be performing tonight at this Red Hook actual chocolate factory.
Severed Heads, StatiqBloom @ Rough Trade
Formed in 1979, Australia’s Severed Heads began as tape loop manipulators not unlike Cabaret Voltaire but, by the late ’80s, pop melodies became a major part of their sound and singles “Greater Reward” and “All Saints Day” were hits on College Radio and in alternative dance clubs. This is their first NYC show in 25 years.
Mr. Twin Sister, Daniel Edinberg (of The Stepkids: DJ Set) @ The Archway
Mr. Twin Sister plays the “Live at the Archway” series of free concerts happening at the Archway under the Manhattan Bridge in DUMBO. 5:30 – 8 PM.
Mass Gothic, Philosophical Zombie @ The Gutter
Noel Heroux of Hooray for Earth has discontinued the use of that band and has signed to Sub Pop as Mass Gothic. What’s it all about? Go to the show!
Spirit Family Reunion, Big Kitty, Innove Gnawa Band, Spitzer Space Telescope, Victory Gardens @ Union Pool
Spirit Family Reunion kick off their two-day Harvest Festival featuring “some of our favorite acts, both local and cosmic, we’ve encountered over the years ranging from avant country to North African dance music. Each night will start out with solo performers and culminate with a full band dance party after we play.”
Of Monsters and Men, Highasakite @ Kings Theatre
Iceland’s masters of sweeping “whoa-oh” style folk pop play their second of three Beacon shows tonight. If you’re going, Norway’s Highasakite are worth showing up early.
