more Kurt Cobain solo album details & "Sappy" demo emerge +++ Krist Novoselic playing on R.E.M.'s Peter Buck's new LP

Kurt Cobain

More details have arisen on the Kurt Cobain solo album that Montage of Heck director Brett Morgen is putting together from the recordings he unearthed while making the documentary. The long-awaited collection of tracks, titled Montage of Heck: The Home Recordings, will be out on November 13 on CD/cassette/digital via Universal. That’s the artwork above, and there is reported to be a 13-track standard edition and a 31-track deluxe edition.

The vinyl release comes out December 4, and an additional single comes out that day too. The single has Kurt’s cover of The Beatles’ “And I Love Her” which leaked earlier this year but has since been deleted. It also includes a rough early demo of “Sappy” (sometimes referred to as “Verse Chorus Verse” but not the only Nirvana song to be given that title). The upbeat full-band version of this song is very readily available, but this solo recording is a lot slower and more somber than that. Listen below.

Meanwhile, Kurt’s former bandmate Krist Novoselic is contributing to R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck‘s new album, Warzone Earth (due 10/16 via Little Axe Records). Other guests include Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy and Peter’s Super-Earth bandmates Scott McCaughey, Bill Rieflin, and Kurt Bloch. Peter shared this about the album:

I’ve just had an exciting couple of weeks working with Tucker Martine on the new record by The Jayhawks which is a stunning tour de force. I think it will blow a lot of minds. I spent yesterday with my good friend Mike, who came to town to add some Millsian glamour to the proceedings. And I am pleased to announce this morning my new magnum opus Warzone Earth is now available. The record features two alternate covers by the folk art legend Mingering Mike. I never thought I’d look so good in tights!

All kidding aside, it’s the best solo record I have made, and I’m excited for it to be out in the world. It’s available through littleaxerecords.com who distributes the record. It should also be available in all the cool independent record stores in your neighborhood, once again, vinyl only, but feel free to make a cassette for your friends.

The remaining third of Nirvana, Dave Grohl, has been singing with Jewel and yelling about chicken fingers or something.

And in other news, Kurt’s daughter Frances Bean Cobain is married now.
