Luna Northside

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

ChameleonsVox, Anasazi, Pleasure Leftists, La Misma, Survival @ The Wick
Mark Burgess has assembled a crack band to help him perform The Chameleons’ The Script of the Bridge in full tonight. He’s calling this his “Farewell Tour” so if you’ve ever wanted to see him live, do it now. It’s a full evening of dark post-punk, including Cleveland’s Pleasure Leftists. Advance tickets are sold out but there will be some available at doors (which open at 7 PM).

Luna, Diane Coffee @ Bowery Ballroom
Reforming after 10 years off, Luna’s VU/Dead-style strum ages extremely well — they sounded great at Northside this summer. This is their second of three NYC shows this week.

The War on Drugs, Natalie Prass @ Radio City Music Hall
The War on Drugs are still riding high off last year’s Lost in the Dream, a slightly psychedelic take on ’80s heartland rock that was successful enough to earn them a major label deal for its followup. Tonight they make the jump to headlining NYC’s Radio CIty Music Hall, with the buzzed-about Natalie Prass opening.

Television, Lower Dens, Viet Cong @ House of Vans
It’s been almost four decades since NYC legends Television released the landmark album Marquee Moon, and they’re unfortunately without Richard Lloyd these days, but their live shows still have plenty of the magic that made that album so special. Excellent support comes from dream poppers Lower Dens and post-punks Viet Cong.

Lucero @ Webster Hall
Lucero have toyed with a handful of styles in their 15+ year career, and for this year’s All A Man Should Do they return to a softer sound, with frontman Ben Nichols playing only acoustic guitar for his first time on record. Tonight’s show has them playing both an acoustic and an electric set.

The Roots, Marsha Ambrosius, Bilal, Talib Kweli (DJ Set) @ Central Park Summer Stage
The Central Park Summer Stage season wraps up tonight with one of hip hop’s busiest groups, The Roots. There’s excellent support from Marsha Ambrosius (who reunited her group Floetry this year and contributed to Dr. Dre’s new album) and Bilal (who contributed to Kendrick Lamar’s new album). Talib Kweli DJs.

Alex G, Ronald Paris, Forth Wanderers @ Baby’s All Right
Alex G’s new album and first for Domino, Beach Music, comes out this week. It’s a hazy, quirky, and kinda slowcore-ish record. Tonight’s his first of two NYC shows in support of it.

“Fable” w/ Sarah Neufeld (of Arcade Fire) @ Knockdown Center
The people behind “Debut” have a new production called “Fable,” which, like its predecessor, merges independent music, immersive dance theater and large-scale art installation. Porcelain Raft’s Mauro Remiddi and Bing & Ruth’s David Moore composed the score for each night, but each night has a different artist giving an improvisational performance. Tonight it’s Arcade Fire’s Sarah Neufeld. “Fable” runs through October 17.

Crying Music (with Zac Pennington, Jherek Bischoff & Steven Reker), Jen Goma @ (le) poisson rouge
Parenthetical Girls singer Zac Pennington, David Byrne/Amanda Palmer collaborator Jherek Bischoff, and choreographer Steven Reker (of People Get Ready) debuted their new project ‘Crying Music’ on the West Coast already, and tonight they bring it to the East. We’re not 100% sure what to expect, but it sounds promising. A Sunny Day In Glagow’s Jen Goma opens.

Diane Cluck @ Rockwood Music Hall Stage 3
If you like the type of introverted and/or psychedelic folk of the late ’60s or its mid-’00s “freak folk” revival, Diane Cluck has been doing that sound well for years. Last year’s Boneset was a great, if not a little overlooked, record.

Monika @ Baby’s All Right
Tonight’s the record release party for Greek singer Monika’s new album, Secret in the Dark, which just came out via Other Music. The record was made with members of the Daptone family and they’ll be in her band tonight. 11:30 PM doors, FREE.

The Growlers, Babe Rainbow @ Irving Plaza
Party rockers The Growlers released Chinese Fountain last year which found the band in a laid-back mood, drawing inspiration from twangy early-’60s rock, with a few danceable numbers in there as well.

Lame Drivers, Woolen Men, EZTV, Gingerlys @ Shea Stadium
Portland’s Woolen Men rail against Big Real Estate on their terrific, angry new album Temporary Monument, which they’re supporting tonight. The whole lineup is good.

Fresh 102.7 Fall Fest 2015 @ The Theater at MSG
New wave survivors Duran Duran are probably the most interesting act on this very mainstream pop concert put on by this adult contemporary radio station.

Robot Chicken Season 8 Party @ Brooklyn Bowl
This is a screening party for the new season of Seth Green’s Adult Swim series Robot Chicken and is part of NY Comic Com/Super Week. There’s free bowling and prizes as well. RSVP for free entry (based on capacity, natch).

President Bill Clinton @ Highline Ballroom
For prices ranging from $150 to $10,000, you can see our former president in the same club you’d normally see mid-size rock and rap shows. Honorary ambassador Raven-Symoné and Buffy herself, Sarah Michelle Gellar, will be in the house too. And also, OAR’s lead singer will perform, if you’re into that sorta thing.

Buster Pointdexter @ Cafe Carlyle
David Johansen puts back on the tux and Buster Poindexter persona for a night of saucy cabaret.

MS MR, Jack Garratt, Verite @ Terminal 5
Glam pop duo MS MR (Lizzy Plapinger and Max Hershenow) released their second album, How Does it Feel, featuring more of their anthemic dance pop.
