Craig Finn

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Craig Finn, Esme Patterson @ Bowery Ballroom
Craig Finn has always had a Springsteen influence, but his new solo album Faith In The Future is the most head-on he’s ever dove into The Boss’ mid-’80s period.

Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival
The multi-venue Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival continues today. Check out the full schedule but highlights include Detroit house veteran MK at Output, UK emotional-house producer George FitzGerald at Good Room, Nadus EP release party at Baby’s, a Blkmarket show at a secret location with Eats Everything, and more.

Flipper, The Austerity Program @ The Acheron
Highly influential noise punks Flipper have inspired countless bands over the past three decades, and it’s pretty amazing that we still get to see them live. Longtime frontman Bruce Loose is sadly no longer a member of the group, but another influential musician, The Jesus Lizard/Scratch Acid’s David Yow, is taking over on vocals. Openers The Austerity Program are worth catching, and one of the bands who owe something to both Flipper and Yow.

Judas Priest, Mastodon @ The Paramount
Metal Gods Judas Priest have been doing it for over four decades, and their live shows still kick major ass. Even last year’s new album (which basically sounds like their early ’80s period) is pretty good. They picked quite a strong support band, Mastodon, who could headline this place on their own. Tonight’s the second of three NYC-area shows.

The Hotelier, Runaway Brother, The Spirit of the Beehive, Oso Oso @ The Studio at Webster Hall
Tiny Engines labelmates The Hotelier and Runaway Brother are two newer bands who are helping blur the lines between pop punk, emo and indie rock, making this a cool double bill. New Jade Tree signees The Spirit of the Beehive are worth caching too.

Dave Hill, Valley Lodge @ Union Hall
Dave Hill’s monthly “Meet Me in the Bathroom and Tell Me All Your Secrets” variety show, with Marcus Monroe, Adira Amram & The Experience, Danny Felts, Murderfist, Greg Barris, and Dave’s group Valley Lodge as house band.

Peacers, Elisa Ambrogio @ Union Pool
Mike Donovan, late of Sic Alps, has a new band called Peacers. Not quite as covered in sludge as Sic Alps, it is nonetheless still in the Mike Donovan style of lysergic ’60s pop.  Opening is Magik Markers’ Ambrogio.

Obnox, the Boobies, Fever the Ghost, Dante @ Pianos
Lamont “Bim” Thomas has released THREE albums this year under his  Obnox moniker. On all three, his vision is blown-out but very soulful, and goes well beyond typical garage rock. There’s a lot going on besides just fuzz.

Jonathan Richman, Tommy Larkins @ Mexicali Live (NJ)
Even if he’d only made the first Modern Lovers album, Jonathan Richman’s legend status, but he’s continued to make heartfelt, thoughtful pop for the last 40 years and is always a treat live.

Chasms, Planning For Burial, Dark Tunnels @ Cake Shop
It’s the second of two shows this week for San Francisco’s atmospheric Chasms (their first NYC shows), and especially worth catching is NJ doomgazer Planning for Burial.

Necrophobic, Mgla, Kommandant, Discordia, Vorde @ Saint Vitus
The Martyroom festival at Saint Vitus begins today with Swedish death vets Necrophobic, Polish black metal greats Mgla, local staples Vorde and more.

La Armada, Ache, Bomb Scare @ The Acheron
La Armada moved from the Dominican Republic to Chicago a few years back, and in that time they’ve continued to churn out ripping metallic hardcore.

Phil Lesh & Friends @ The Capitol Theatre
The Grateful Dead’s Phil Lesh continues his run at the Cap tonight, and this one’s especially exciting because it has David Nelson of New Riders of the Purple Sage on guitar.

Jethro Tull: The Rock Opera – Performed by Ian Anderson @ Kings Theatre
So this isn’t exactly a Jethro Tull set… but kind of. Ian Anderson, frontman and flautist of the legendary progressive rock band, is performing an opera based on the band with virtual guests on video and some slightly re-written versions of Tull songs.

Palm, Palberta, The Cradle @ Palisades
Palm make a pretty eccentric brand of avant-rock, as you can hear on their new album Trading Basics that’s out today via Inflated/Exploding In Sound. This is the release show.

PWR BTTM, Mumblr, Winter Passing, Teen Death, Nonsense @ Aviv
This show is mostly local and local-ish bands, but it’s especially worth noting that 6131 labelmates The Winter Passing (Ireland) and Teen Death (Richmond, VA) are in town tonight.

Lou Gramm, Dee Snider, Tone Loc, A Flock of Seagulls, Howard Jones, DMC, Debbie Gibson, Tiffany, Martha Quinn, Harlem Gospel Choir  @ The Theater at MSG
This show is called “I Want My 80s Concert” and if you like that decade basically indiscriminatly, you’ll get nothing but the hits as these singers/rappers are backed by cover band Jessie’s Girl. No, really. Original MTV VJ Martha Quinn will be there too.

You could also just stay home and binge-watch Aziz Ansari‘s new Netflix series, Master of None.

For all of tonight’s shows, and tomorrow’s, check out our NYC concert calendar.

For laughs, check out the NYC Comedy calendar too.
