Dinosaur Jr

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Dinosaur Jr. @ Bowery Ballroom
One of the quintessential American indie rock bands, Dinosaur Jr. celebrate their 30th anniversary with seven shows at Bowery Ballroom. Each night they’ll play their debut album in full and special guests are promised. Last night had Frank Black, Lee Ranaldo and Fred Armisen. Who will be tonight?

Jesse Ruins, Soren Roi, CVN @ Cake Shop
Japanese electronic artist Jesse Ruins, who has had records out on Captured Tracks and Lefse, last year released Heartless. The LP commented on our increasingly online world as much though his glitchy, paranoid sonic soundscapes as titles like “Scar Caused by Your Phone,” “404nf” and “URL Sinking.” This is their U.S. live debut.

Imagine: John Lennon’s 75th Birthday Concert feat. Aloe Blacc, Eric Church, Sheryl Crow, Brandon Flowers, John Fogerty, Peter Frampton, Spoon, Willie Nelson, The Roots & more @ The Theatre at MSG
Celebrating the music of the late John Lennon, this all-star tribute is being taped for AMC TV (broadcast on December 19).

Car Seat Headrest, Ne-Hi, Moniker @ Baby’s All Right
After releasing a billion songs on bandcamp, Car Seat Headrest signed to Matador and re-recorded some of the highlights for Teens of Style, a very catchy record that would’ve fit right in between Weezer and Nirvana on ’90s rock radio. It’s worth catching his Chicago-based tourmates Ne-Hi tonight too.

Cyndi Lauper w/ Boy George, Kurt Vile & many more @ Beacon Theater
It’s Cyndi Lauper’s annual holiday show, and she’s put together quite the eclectic list of guests. They range from fellow ’80s pop star Boy George to indie folk rocker Kurt Vile to Natasha Bedingfield to Bon Jovi’s Richie Sambora to Keb Mo to the singer of New Found Glory. Needless to say, there won’t be any other show quite like this one tonight.

Grooms, Solvey, Drawing Boards @ Palisades
Grooms just got back from a long European tour with A Place to Bury Strangers so they should be well-practiced for this headline show. Solvey is the solo project of Jessica Zambri (of Zambri), and this is the first-ever show for Drawing Boards (Doug Marvin from Dirty on Purpose and Aaron Pfannebecker of Sisters).

Rocket From The Tombs, EZTV @ WFMU Monty Hall
Rocket From The Tombs were making ripping, eccentric proto-punk in the mid-’70s before the members formed Dead Boys and Pere Ubu. Their album never got an actual release until the 2000s, and now they’ve put out two more including this year’s Black Record. The new stuff is good, too. They play Jersey tonight and Brooklyn tomorrow.

Jeremih @ S.O.B.’s
Back before “alt-R&B” actually became as popular as the poppier stuff, Jeremih had one of the genre’s best releases with his 2012 Late Nights mixtape. Yesterday, he finally put out its long-awaited followup/sequel, Late Nights The Album, and it totally delivers. This show is free, but you had to get a ticket (which are now gone) and it’s first come first served once you show up.

Psychemagik, Mike Simonetti @ Highline Ballroom
Psychemagik got their start doing remixes, but they more recently started writing their own psychedelic electronic pop songs, which are just as great. Tonight they team up with Mike Simonetti of Italians Do It Better.

Sepalcure, Avalon Emerson, Darren Keen @ Palisades
Electronic duo Sepalcure (aka Machinedrum and Braille) have a new full length in the works, but first they dropped a two-song EP about a month ago. They’ll keep the dancefloors moving at this very late show (starts at midnight).

Mikey Erg, Anika Pyle, Lauren Denitzio @ Suburbia
Three staples in the local punk scene come together for a night of solo sets. There’s Mikey Erg of seven thousand bands, Anika Pyle of Chumped and Katie Ellen, and Lauren Denitzio of Worriers (one of those seven thousand that Mikey is in).

Weston, Digger, The Fiendz, Mikey Erg @ The Studio at Webster Hall
The Suburbia show is actually one of two shows for Mikey Erg tonight. He also opens the co-reunion tour of ’90s-era Pennsylvania punk bands Weston (whose James Alex Snyder now fronts Beach Slang) and Digger.

We Were Promised Jetpacks @ Warsaw
Makers of soaring, sad, Scottish indie rock, We Were Promised Jetpacks return to NYC tonight for a show at Warsaw. They last released Unraveling in 2014.

Gigg On, Girl Festival feat. OSHUN, Diet Cig, Sharkmuffin, Mal Devisa, HD (DJ Set), Bearcat (DJ Set) @ Barnard College
Gigg On, Girl is a festival that “highlights rising female musicians in an industry that often overlooks their presence and diminishes their voices.” Headlining this one is soul/R&B/rap duo OSHUN, who are definitely worth seeing.

Crocodiles, Scully, Cabana Kids @ Grand Victory
Crocodiles released Boys earlier this year, an album which found them staying the course with their post-VU fuzzpop which, if not groundbreaking, always sounds right and is a lot fun live.

Jonathan Toubin (DJ Set) @ Alphaville
This danceparty, dubbed “Sweating to the Oldies (For Public Health)” is a benefit for Planned Parenthood.
