Jane Birkin & Charlotte Gainsbourg both appearing at Lincoln Center retrospective of their films

Birkin and Gainsbourg in Kung Fu Master!

Jane Birkin and her daughter Charlotte Gainsbourg both have had acclaimed careers in music and film. The Film Society at Lincoln Center will celebrate Birkin and Gainsbourg for a cinematic retrospective titled “Jane and Charlotte Forever” which runs January 29 – February 7 at Lincoln Center.

The week kids off with “An Evening with Jane Birkin and Charlotte Gainsbourg” on January 29 that will feature Jane Birkin in La Pirate, followed by Charlotte Gainsbourg in Antichrist, and then an in-person Q&A with both. Regular tickets are sold out but passes for the entire retrospective (including this event) are still available.

Birkin will participate in a few other of the series’ events, including a Q&A with costar (and onetime Warhol “superstar”) Joe Dallesandro at the 6:30 PM screening of Je t’aime moi non plus on Saturday (1/30, tickets) and then will introduce the 9 PM screening of 1969’s Slogan (co-starring Serge Gainsbourg) at 9 PM the same night (tickets). Birkin will also participate in a Q&A after the January 31 screening of Jane B. for Agnes V at 6:30PM (tickets) and will introduce 9 PM the screening of Agnes Varda’s 1988 film Kung Fu Master in which she co-stars with Charlotte (tickets).

Other films in the series include Claude Miller’s L’Effrontée (1985) and The Little Thief (1988), Yvan Attal’s 2001 film My Wife is an Actress, Michel Gondry’s The Science of Sleep, Andrew Birkin’s 1993 film The Cement Garden, Jacques Doillon’s 1981 film The Prodigal Daughter, Jacques Deray’s La Piscine (1969) and more.

Additionally, on display in the Film Society’s Furman Gallery throughout the retrospective will be “Actresses by Kate Barry,” an exhibition of photographs by the late Kate Barry — daughter of Jane and half-sister of Charlotte.
