Winter Jazzfest is underway in NYC, and among the shows on opening night (2/13) was this eclectic bill of acts with punk and jazz roots at Le Poisson Rouge, headlined by long-running Dutch anarcho collective The Ex. Pictures from the whole night are in this post.
The night began with trio Happy Apple, who played a great set of punky free jazz that featured terrific playing by the drummer and saxophonist. Next up was a collaborative set from Colin Stetson and Bill Laswell. Stetson showed off his maniacal circular breathing techniques on the sax, barely coming up for air, accompanied by Laswell’s bass sonics. The room cleared out a bit after Stetson, but those who stayed got to witness The Ex’s spectacular headlining set: lively, punky, even humorous and incredibly fun. A near-perfect night.
The Ex play Winter Jazzfest again tonight (1/15) at The Greene Space, a show that also features Alicia Hall Moran with Brandon Ross, plus Dither and Chargaux. Tickets, which get you into any Winter Jazzfest event tonight, are still available.
