What's going on Thursday? (Jenny Lewis, Anderson Paak, Wolf Eyes, Pharoahe Monch, Black Breath, Emily Wells, more)

Anderson Paak

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Jenny Lewis, The Watson Twins, M. Ward @ Beacon Theatre
Ten years ago, Jenny Lewis teamed up with the Watson Twins to release Rabbit Fur Coat. That album still lives up today, and Jenny and the Watsons are celebrating by performing it at Beacon Theatre. M Ward, who guests on the album, opens.

Anderson. Paak & The Free Nationals, Jay Watts, Marcus Machado @ SOB’s
Anderson .Paak first caught our ears on with his six notable guest appearances on the new Dr. Dre album, and he quickly got out his own new album, the soul/funk/rap hybrid Malibu, that proved he’s at least as good on his own too. This should be a good show, and it’s sold out.

Cosmicide, Exiles, Ohnomoon, Sleepy Ha Has, Queen of Jeans @ Pianos
Former Secret Machines founder Brandon Curtis has been playing under the Cosmicide name for a couple years, making music that has that widescreen postpunk vibe that former band did so well. This is the first show of his February residency at Pianos.

Fetty Wap, Post Malone, Monty @ Wellmont Theater
Fetty Wap’s debut album spawned four charting singles and about twice as many could-be singles, but you already know this because you couldn’t leave your house last year without hearing them. Tonight’s the first of three NYC-area shows with frequent collaborator Monty and “White Iverson” rapper Post Malone.

Decapitated, Black Breath, Theories @ The Studio at Webster Hall
Polish death metal band Decapitated are currently on the road with two killer Seattle bands, Black Breath and Theories. Especially exciting is Black Breath, who are fresh off the release of their classic-minded DM album Slaves Beyond Death, one of the best of its kind in 2015.

Dead Heavens @ Grand Victory
While Walter Schreifels obtained “legendary” status by playing in hardcore and post-hardcore bands (like Gorilla Biscuits and Quicksand), Dead Heavens gives him a chance to dive into ’60s-inspired garage/psych.

Wolf Eyes @ Union Pool
It’s the first night of Wolf Eyes three-show Union Pool residency. All the shows will be highly experimental/improvisational, featuring help from Nate Young, John Olson, James Baljo, Viki Viktoria, Chip Apetechnology (Survival Research Labs), Sam Hooker, and Tyler Hicks. Should be interesting.

Hannibal Buress ‘Comedy Camisado’ screening @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
It’s Hannibal’s 33rd birthday today and to celebrate he’s throwing this free screening of his new Netflix comedy special ‘Comedy Camisado.’ He’s teasing a special musical guest, too. Doors are at 7 PM, 18+.

Talib Kweli and live band @ Blue Note (two shows)
NYC rap staple Talib Kweli is possibly busier than ever this winter, with a total of nine shows in about two months. Tonight he and a live band knock out two more.

Spank Rock, Moistbreezy, BOYSLASHFRIEND @ Good Room
Electro-rapper Spank Rock hasn’t released new music in a while, but he’s got plenty of super fun material dating back over a decade.

Emily Wells, Lorna Dune @ Bowery Ballroom
Emily Wells continues to hone her brand of hip hop-influenced string-laden baroque pop on her new album, Promise, which just came out last week. For tonight’s show, additional strings are provided by the Metropolis Ensemble.

Lead Belly Fest @ Carnegie Hall
Blues legend Lead Belly has influenced tons of artists across several genres for over half a century. That’s evident from tonight’s varied lineup, which includes Buddy Guy, Eric Burdon, Marky Ramone and many more.

Pharoahe Monch, PitchBlack Brass Band @ Merkin Concert Hall
Part of the Ecstatic Music Festival, tonight features rapper Pharoahe Monch backed by the PitchBlack Brass Band, with a string section, too.

Dylan LeBlanc, Brian Dunne @ Mercury Lounge
Acclaimed Muscle Shoals-born folk crooner Dylan LeBlanc celebrates the release of his third album, Cautionary Tale.

Buster Pointdexter @ Cafe Carlyle
New York Dolls singer David Johansen puts back on the tux and his party-friendly Buster Poindexter persona for a night of saucy cabaret at this fancypants supper club.

Mike Birbiglia @ The Lynn Redgrave Theater
Comedian Mike Birbiglia has been doing his show “Thank God for the Jokes” for nearly two years. He’s finally putting it to bed, but not before this six-week run.

Oberhofer, High Waisted, granny, Junk Boys @ Baby’s All Right
Brad Oberhofer’s new album Chronovisions in August which is more of his cheerful brand of indie rock/pop.

‘Not Quite Midnight’ @ Littlefield
Hosted by Courtney Maginnis and Chris Calogero, ‘Not Quite Midnight’ is somewhere between a talk show and a stand up show. Tonight’s guests: Janeane Garofalo, Josh Gondelman, Brett Davis, and Aaron Glaser.
