In 2009, Belle & Sebastian's Stuart Murdoch released God Help the Girl, a musical project that featured the band and guest vocalists telling a rock opera of sorts. It's now become a motion picture musical written and directed by Murdoch, which begins its North American release on September 5 and stars Hannah Murray (Game of Thrones, Skins), Olly Alexander (of the band Years and Years), Emily Browning and Pierre Boulanger. The story is about a lazy summer in Glasgow, as Murdoch explains:

A better summer, or at least a summer when something happened. It happened to a boy and a girl and a girl in a city roughly the same size and population of Glasgow. Perhaps the canals were a bit grimier, the high-rise buildings taller, the streets emptier when you needed them to be, and the beat clubs busier than the ones around here. But on the whole the city was this one.
Check out the trailer for the film below. There's a private screening of God Help the Girl this Monday (8/25) at 6:30 PM at Nitehawk Cinema with Stuart Murdoch and cast (Emily Browning, Olly Alexander and Hannah Murray) in attendance. We've got two pairs of tickets to give away. Details on that are below.

Average joes can catch the film in NYC when it opens September 5 at Village East Cinemas. All North American screening dates are listed, along with contest details and the trailer, below...

Stage 48

It took us a minute to fully realize it, but since losing Webster Hall, Bowery Presents has been booking shows at the similarly sized Manhattan venue Stage 48. You may already realize this. You may not care. Regardless, it's happening. Is it temporary? We don't know. Have you been to the venue? What do you think?

Not all Stage 48 shows are Bowery Presents. Kaiju Big Battel and Bomba Estereo are not.

The Horrors, Sleep, and Justin Townes Earle are all Bowery Presents shows though (as are Sir Sly, Wolf Gang, Secret Someones, J. Roddy Walston & The Business, Fly Golden Eagle, EOTO, and Watsky).

We actually have a pair of tickets to give away for the 9/9 Justin Townes Earle show. Want them? Details on how to enter to win below...

Spoon @ Governors Ball 2014 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
SPOON

Spoon took their sweet time announcing openers for their Central Park Summerstage show on September 10. (Most dates on the tour are either with EMA or Hamilton Leithauser.) But now it is known that multi-continent funk punks !!! (chk chk chk) and Dan Boeckner's new group Operators will be the night's very high quality undercard. Tickets are still available but if you want to go for free, we've got a pair of tickets to give away. Details below.

This marks Operators third NYC show (the first was BV's Northside showcase, the second was with now tourmates Future Islands). Also, interestingly, this means all four members of Divine Fits (Boeckner and Britt Daniel's combo band) will be performing at this show. In addition to Britt Daniel and Boeckner, Divine Fits guitarist/keyboardist Alex Fischel is now in Spoon, and drummer Sam Brown is in Operators. Maybe we'll get a DF encore?

Garfunkel & Oates @ Outside Lands 2014
2014 Outside Lands Festival Day 1

The plots in Garfunkel and Oates are often so great on their own that they don't need the musical interruptions. "Speechless," a funny song about men's sports obsessions, is shoved almost haphazardly into what would otherwise be a wonderful episode about the absurdity of dating. (The central plot involves Riki and Kate seeing how long they can date two men without saying a single world; the results are hilarious.)

This isn't to say that Garfunkel and Oates is bad. In fact, it's quite good, and the strangeness of the show shines throughout the three episodes I viewed. The humor is both absurd and relatable, whether the stars are trying to "fade away" instead of breaking up with someone or are dealing with their porn doppelgangers achieving an overnight level of fame that Riki and Kate could only dream of. Episodes often drift into bits of fantasy, with the leads imagining their agent as a bumbling puppet or pausing during oral sex to sing a song about a poor gag reflex. [Flavorwire]

Garfunkel and Oates, the new comedy show starring and fictitiously based on comedy-folk duo Garfunkel and Oates (aka actress/singers Kate Micucci and Riki Lindhome), premiered on IFC last week (8/7). That's an excerpt of Flavorwire's review above. Did you catch it? What did you think? You can check out a clip of their ode to "the embarrassment of an overactive gag reflex," below.

Garfunkel and Oates the band are currently on tour (dates listed below), having just hit Outside Lands in San Francisco over the weekend. We've got a set of pictures of them from that fest in this post.

The tour hits NYC on August 30 at Irving Plaza and returns to San Francisco on September 27 at Cobbs (for early and late shows). You can still get tickets to most dates on the tour, including both of those shows, and we're giving away a pair of tickets with meet and greet for both NYC and San Francisco (late show).

Contest details, with more Outside Lands pics, dates and that video, below...

see Jarvis fix a flat...like common people
Pulp

If you're a Pulp fan you probably already know that you've got two upcoming chances in NYC to see Florian Habicht's excellent and very entertaining documentary PULP: A Film About Life, Death & Supermarkets. It's screening August 6 at Lincoln Center with a Habicht post-show Q&A as part of the venue's Sound + Vision fest (tickets); and then Rooftop Films on August 7 (Industry City in Sunset Park location) with a post-screening Q&A with Jarvis Cocker and Habicht (tickets). If you'd like to go to the Rooftop Films screening/Q&A for free we're giving away a pair of tickets. Details on that are below.

The Rooftop Films screening just got a little more interesting. Before the screening, the good folks at Mondo NYC will be DJing, and immediately after the Q&A there will be a Pulp karaoke contest judged by Jarvis and Habicht. To enter, you need to Tweet to @RooftopFilms saying which Pulp song you'd like to do with the hashtag #singforjarvis, and plead your case. Song selections and more details here but they do suggest maybe you might want to pick a song besides "Common People." Too band "Bad Cover Version" isn't an option -- too meta?

Trailer for the film and the "Bad Cover Version" video below...
