SATURDAY LOOKS GOOD TO ME - new album, MP3s & 2007 Tour Dates (w/ The Blow, CMJ)

DOWNLOAD: Saturday Looks Good To Me - Make A Plan (MP3)

Saturday Looks Good To Me

After three years of relative silence, warped indie-pop collective Saturday Looks Good To Me return triumphantly with their fourth studio album Fill Up The Room which will drop on October 23. Following two critically acclaimed releases with Polyvinyl Records, this marks the beginning of the band's work with K Records, and a dramatic progression from their 60's tinged retro-pop sound to a more textured, experimental and colorful breed of pop music.
Whatever it is, I like it. One MP3 above, and two more new songs streaming at their MySpace. See them...

Black Kids are the "best" & playing CMJ

DOWNLOAD: Black Kids - I'm Not Gonna Teach Your BoyFriend How to Dance With You (MP3)

Black Kids

Pitchfork excited me with their choices two days in a row. Yesterday they gave Bon Iver a little boost....

THANK YOU TO PITCHFORK FOR AN OVERWHELMING RESPONSE! THE RECORD IS CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE. PLEASE CHECK BACK FOR AN OFFICIAL RELEASE DATE SOON. [Bon Iver]
Check out Bon Iver at two upcoming BrooklynVegan shows.

Today it was a band called Black Kids from Jacksonville, Florida - a band who I haven't posted about yet, but who I was excited to check out this CMJ - so excited, that I also booked them to play a BV CMJ show. People from the South have been raving about their live show, and I've also been loving the few songs I've heard so far...

You can download Black Kids' four-song demo, Wizard of Ahhhs, for free on their MySpace-- it's not available in stores. They're giving away something we can't buy often enough: a record with not just a distinctive aesthetic, but also one single-worthy track after another. Dueling keyboards and scrappy lo-fi guitars give rise to Go! Team-style shouted-back cheers, a communal urgency not unlike the Arcade Fire's, and an uptempo bounce paying homage to Motown 45's. In short, Black Kids make catchy, tightly executed songs that put a memorable stamp on pop's classic themes.[Pitchfork - Best New Music]
Black Kids are playing their official CMJ showcase at the Annex on October 18th with Mates of State (an NME show) (sold out). Black Kids are also playing the free BrooklynVegan show at R Bar on October 19th - with Yo Majesty and more bands TBA soon. All tour dates below....

Meat Puppets, Melvins, Mudhoney and a CMJ announcement

DOWNLOAD: Meat Puppets - Look at the Rain (MP3)
DOWNLOAD: Mudhoney - Halloween (MP3)
DOWNLOAD: Melvins - Going Blind (MP3)
DOWNLOAD: Nirvana - Even in His Youth (MP3)

GrungeMeat Puppets formed in 1980 in Phoenix, Arizona. The Melvins formed in the early 80's too - in Montesano, Washington. Mudhoney formed in 1988 - out of the ashes of Green River, and with Matt Lukin (who had recently left the Melvins) on bass - in Seattle, Washington. Nirvana became Nirvana in 1988 too - in Aberdeen (or Seattle), Washington (Dave Grohl joined in 1990).

Mudhoney cites Meat Puppets as an influence. Nirvana was influenced by Mudhoney & the Melvins. Kurt Cobain even unsuccessfully tried out to be in the Melvins. The Melvins' Dale Crover played drums with Nirvana for a bit, and then the Melvins' Buzz Osborne eventually introduced Dave Grohl to Nirvana. Kurt Cobain later became a fan of Meat Puppets after seeing them open for Black Flag.

Meat Puppets and Mudhoney both opened for Nirvana at the State Fairgrounds Coliseum in Phoenix, Arizona on October 18, 1993. In November 1993, members of Meat Puppets appeared on MTV Unplugged with Nirvana - the Meat Puppets were then mainstream. Kurt Cobain died on April 8, 1994. Meat Puppets went on their first hiatus in 1996. Krist Novoselic (Nirvana) and Curt Kirkwood (Meat Puppets) later formed a short-lived band called Eyes Adrift. The Melvins, Meat Puppets & Mudhoney are all currently active bands (again).

Ghostland Observatory

I couldn't believe it when Ghostland Observatory was headlining (and sold out) Bowery Ballroom, and I couldn't believe it even more when they were the biggest thing ever in the world at Austin City Limits this year - they headlined one of the stages (right before Bob Dylan played on another stage) on the last night of the festival, and you couldn't get within a mile of them - they are HUGE (in their hometown of Austin at least).

I sort of got into them for the first time there too - even though I was tired, couldn't get anywhere near them, etc - I felt like under the right circumstances - it could work out between us....He can sing, and it's definitely danceable. (ok, I like them, I'll say it)

Tickets are on sale for an October 19th CMJ Ghostland Observatory show at Webster Hall.

Over the summer, Spank Rock and Ghostland played the same party at McCarren Pool. Spank Rock likes to dance on top of computers. Spank Rock is also playing CMJ. October 19th @ Irving Plaza:

* Spank Rock
* Noisettes
* Yo Majesty
* Earl Greyhound
* Santogold
* The Apes
Is it safe to assume that the theme of this CMJ showcase is related to the fact that all the groups have at least one African American musician in them? Whatever it is, it's hot. No tix yet.

Yo Majesty are also playing Highline Ballroom with Islands and Trail of Dead. Yo Majesty are also playing an unannounced BrooklynVegan party.

Ghostland & Spack Rock tour dates below....

Cut Off Your Hands

Hey there,
We are a four peice band from New Zealand, originally called Shaky Hands but now Cut Off Your Hands....

This was due to the threat of legal action from a band from Portland, Oregon. They didn't like us using the name (or anything similar) in America as they did get to that teritory first and it would have been too time consuming and costly for us to take this matter to court.

We did think about still calling ourselves Shaky Hands and having the name Cut Off Your Hands just for America but that would have got too confusing hence the complete name change. We got the name Cut Off Your Hands from the title of our EP, the EP is now called Shaky Hands..

So to find us please go to www.myspace.com/cutoffyourhands

We love you all for being our friends & look forward to seeing you soon!!

us
xoxoxo

Shaky HandsShaky Hands

The red, white and blue album cover pictured above is the "Shaky Hands" (formerly "Cut Off Your Hands") EP by Cut Off Your Hands (formerly Shaky Hands) (New Zealand). The album to its right is "The Shaky Hands" LP by The Shaky Hands (Portland, Oregon).

Cut Off Your Hands are pictured above being silly with grass in their mouth and some fake chickens in the background. Here is a picture of The Shaky Hands being silly in the trunk of a vehicle:

Shaky Hands

The Shaky Hands share a member with the Castanets, and have been compared to Neutral Milk Hotel, R.E.M., and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Saying "Cut Off Your Hands Say Yeah" is a funny joke, even though Cut Off Your Hands' music sounds nothing like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.

Both of these bands are playing CMJ. Both of these hands are playing BrooklynVegan shows. The Shaky Hands are playing my Bowery Ballroom show on October 16th with The Rosebuds, Dean & Britta, Miracle Fortress, Bon Iver, The Most Serene Republic, and one more unannounced band. Tickets are on sale. Cut Off Your Hands are playing my Pianos show on October 17th AT NOON. Celebration, Black Ghosts and many more unnanounced bands are also on that bill (full show TBA soon). It is free. All tour dates below.....

ORBA SQUARA (from that iPhone commercial) -- playing CMJ

DOWNLOAD: Orba Squara - Perfect Timing This Morning (MP3)

Orba SquaraNot quite famous, but getting there - Mitch Davis' band Orba Squara is now best known for the song "Perfect Timing This Morning". That's because it appears in an iPhone commercial -- well, some of it....

"I wasn't allowed to tell anybody it was happening," Davis tells Billboard.com of the period prior to the commercial's debut. "I didn't even know for sure that the song really was going to be featured until I saw it myself." Unfortunately for Davis, the ad ends before his delicate vocals come in. "I would have liked for people to hear the whole song how it is, of course, but I'd rather it this way than not at all," he says. [Billboard]
Download the whole track above. The whole album Sunshyness is out October 9th. Listen even more at their MySpace. See them at and during CMJ. Those dates, and some videos, below....

Black Ghosts

QUESTIONS: What is the difference between Simian & Simian Mobile Disco? What does any of it have to do with Justice? And who the hell are The Black Ghosts?

ANSWERS:

Simian were an English electro-rock band, best-known for their song "La Breeze", which was featured in the Peugeot 1007 commercial. The members are Simon William Lord, James Ellis Ford, Alex MacNaghten & James Anthony Shaw. Their second album "We Are Your Friends" was produced by ambient music composer and producer for U2 and Talking Heads, the famed Brian Eno............In 2006, "We Are Your Friends", a remix of their song "Never Be Alone" was released.....This single was credited to "Justice vs. Simian" and started life as a submission by the French electro outfit Justice in a remix competition. The video for the single won the award for best video at MTV Europe Video Awards 2006......Simian split up in 2005 with Ford and Shaw forming the splinter group Simian Mobile Disco. The new group is more dance oriented and are in demand as remixers and DJs. Lord now is in The Black Ghosts, an electronica act with DJ Touche from The Wiseguys. [Wikipedia]
And now you know (in case you didn't).

ONE MORE FUN FACT! - Simon William Lord (now in The Black Ghosts) was the vocalist in Simian, and so it is his voice singing in "Because we are your friends you'll never be alone again well come on well come on well come on well come on......

---

Stream a Black Ghosts DJ mix HERE AND HERE. You can also get their mixes for free on iTunes. Download MP3s above. Get their I AM SOUND debut EP ("Anyway You Choose To Give It") when it is released on October 30th.

And see The Black Ghosts for the first time when they make their U.S. debut in NYC this year for CMJ. So far they're DJing (I think it's all DJing) at least four events - the Syndicate party at Rebel on October 15th, the Magnum PR showcase at the Delancey on October 17th, the "I Heart" showcase at Angel Orensanz on October 18th, AND..........the free BrooklynVegan party happening at Pianos during the day on October 17th (DJ set from 4-5 pm - in the bar). More details on that to be announced shortly (save the date!).
