Annie - new albums out (MP3, video), DJing in NYC tonight

Annie

Annie's second album, Don't Stop, was supposed to come out last year, and for the Norwegian singer's net-savvy audience, it basically did. The version of the record that is being commercially released now is a bit different from what leaked in 2008-- a few tracks have been cut, a few more have been added-- but since it is being released with a bonus disc that includes every notable excluded track save for her cover of Stacey Q's "Two of Hearts", the final product is less glass-half-empty and more cup-runneth-over. [Pitchfork]
The bonus disk is an EP called "All Night" - tracklisting below. Two tracks off the new album (one being a remix) above. A video for a different "new" song below.

Annie won't be performing live to promote the release, but she is in town as a DJ. You can catch her at Tribeca Grand tonight (11/21) where Boy Crisis is also playing. The flyer for that show and all dates below...

Red Mass played M For Montreal (where Bill is spending the weekend), playing NYC in December ++ new EP (MP3)

Red Mass @ La Sala Rossa - Nov 18, 2009
M For Montreal

I'm currently up here in Montreal getting ready for the fourth annual M for Montreal, a music festival/industry event mashup that showcases nearly 30 of the city's bands/artists who are ready, in the eyes and ears of festival organizers, to make the leap from a local act to the international stage. Or something like that. In for the fest are journalists, bloggers, talent bookers, concert promoters and music supervisors from around the world (well, mainly North America and Europe) ready to see what Montreal's got.

The action doesn't start proper Thursday tonight but we got an unofficial taste of Montreal Wednesday night at La Sala Rossa, a cool, medium-sized venue that's above a tapas restaurant. The crimson walls and velvet curtains of the club were a perfect backdrop for Red Mass who were having their record release party. Their first-ever gig was at last year's M for Montreal so this served as a one-year anniversary of sorts as well, not to mention being a record release party for their new EP on Semprini Records. You can download "Saturn" from that record at the top of this post. Cover art below.

Last year, there were about 10 folks in the band, including a dude who only wore a Speedo and gold paint. Red Mass have now slimmed to a lean, mean quartet, though a violinist and oboe player were brought out on a couple songs which is maybe not what you'd expect from a band whose sonic influences seem to be of the Stooges/Damned/Misfits variety. Frontman Choyce (late of CPC Gangbangs and a slew of other Montreal garage bands) clearly knows what he wants, no matter how many musicians are on stage. He also carries the whole color thing through -- appearing onstage first in a red cape and hat, and then later in a red smoking jacket; the keyboardist/percussionist had a cherry swath of makeup across the middle of his face. Red Mass tore through eight or nine songs in 20 minutes before taking a 15 minute beer break, returning for a second set of longer, dronier, noisier, weirder material. Good stuff.

Red Mass will make their NYC (and American) debut Friday, December 4 at the Live With Animals gallery (210 Kent, part of the Monster Island space) in Brooklyn, playing with Golden Triangle. I'm told they'll also play the next night too, venue TBD.

Red Mass weren't the only band on the bill at La Sala Rossa. We also got Dead Wife, a very young punk band who've also been together for about a year. All girls apart from their speed machine drummer. What they lacked in chops and songwriting (we're talking straight up shouty shambolic punk) they made up for with attitude. They definitely believe it.

A flyer from the show, a few more pictures and video of Red Mass performing "Saturn" are after the jump...

Local Natives

"Indeed, in many ways Local Natives' Gorilla Manor is like a science experiment in how to create a critically acclaimed album: take some of the ethereal folksiness of Fleet Foxes ('Airplanes'), add some Arcade Fire-ish choral harmonies (' Shape Shifter', 'Stranger Things'), a dash of Broken Social Scene's quirkiness ('World News', 'Camera Talk') sprinkle with Cold War Kids-esque off-kilter timings and shouty middle eights ('Sun Hands', 'Warning Sign'), throw in some post-punk Gang Of Four meets Bloc Party drumming and a half-tablespoon of string-soaked balladry ('Who Knows Who Cares') and simmer for 45 minutes before wrapping it up in a warm glow. The result? Arguably the most intriguing and enduring debut of the year." [State]
That review is from an Irish site. The album is not yet available in the states (though its rumored that a signing announcement is coming soon).

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros are on tour with Fool's Gold and Local Natives. The three bands played Bowery Ballroom on Tuesday (11/17) followed by a Wednesday (11/18 - last night) show at Music Hall of Williamsburg where Edward Sharpe also played in August when they were last here.

Both opening bands joined the other on stage for a song. During Local Natives' set it was their last song "Sun Hands" that Fool's Gold backed them up on. Download that track above. More pictures from last night below...

Black Metal Soundystem is Mixhell - made a mixtape (MP3), played w/ Jon Hopkins & Prefuse 73 @ LPR - pics

Prefuse 73 @ LPR
Prefuse 73

David Ellis' exhibition at (Le) Poisson Rouge is a misnomer. It consists of a handful of sculptures wrought from records (and their sleeves) that are neat bits of ornamental design but that don't invite any kind of reflection. The same is true of his "movement sculpture", which comes off like a sneaker commercial. Perhaps noticing this, someone tacked on a looped playback of Ellis' collaboration with Italian street artist Blu.

The opening was followed by a show with performances by Prefuse 73, Jon Hopkins and MIXHELL. Not much happened. The high point turned out to be a set of horror-inspired stuff from Jon Hopkins, in which he used the venue's cavernous interior and well-spread speaker system to creepy and then chest-rattling effect. Prefuse 73 played a rambling, messy set that was disappointing coming from such royalty. One sequence, a sustained sampling of guitar solos (including some Hendrix), was smart if totally undanceable. He was probably just drunk, or bored, as were we." [Dossier]

For Jon Hopkins it was his first of three NYC shows in three days. One of his other shows was opening for The xx at Bowery Ballroom.

MIXHELL (aka Iggor Cavalera of Sepultura) plays as duo with his wife and alternates between the DJ booth and a drum set. We're not sure what he did at the free LPR show on Tuesday night though (because Vincent needed to take off before his late set) .

And MIXHELL may be a DJ now, but he hasn't forgotten his metal roots. Check out the new mixtape he made under the name of his new side project, Black Metal Soundsystem, above.

More pictures from Tuesday night below...

Orba Squara is also opening for Jad Fair at Knitting Factory in Brooklyn on Saturday, November 21st. I'm not sure if Jad has more dates scheduled, but he does have about 50 MySpace pages.

Coalesce released OX EP (MP3s), played FFF Fest (pics)

Coalesce

Yellow pages have not been able to confirm a Cobra Kai dojo in Kansas City, but Coalesce are definitely living by the way of their sensei: "Mercy is for the weak". The OX LP, their first album in 10 years, was released in June and is already creeping on to many year-end short lists, and now the KC crew have hit the public with part II; the OX EP is out NOW via Relapse Records! Download a pair of tracks from the OX EP above, and order the EP with a Coalesce knife (not to be confused with the Khanate knife that surfaced earlier this year).

Though a force a nature all their own, Coalesce battled the elements (it was pouring rain during their set) at Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin, along with a cast of some of heavy music's finest like DRI (who may or may not be playing NYC), Danzig, Reign Supreme, Melt Banana, Austin's The Roller, and many other faves. More pictures from Coalesce's performance at that show are below.

Coliseum was also on hand for the killer festival, and they will join Coalesce when the pair team up with A Storm of Light, Your Skull My Closet, and Tournament for the BV-sponsored show at Europa on 12/30. Tickets are on sale.

BV is also proud to sponsor Shrinebuilder/Rwake/Liturgy at LPR in NYC on 11/15 (tix still available). And speaking of Austin, tickets are also still available for a Shrinebuilder show happening at Emo's the day after the NYC show.

BV is also sponsoring Dark Castle/The Atlas Moth/Wetnurse/Tiger Flowers at Union Pool on 11/17, and (Special Guest), Javelina, Black Tusk, and Batillus at The Charleston on 11/18. What a week!

Coalesce has no other shows scheduled. More pictures from FFFFest, below...

Akron/Family @ ATP NY in September (more by Ryan Muir)
Akron/Family

Akron/Family are currently in Europe, and they're playing Australia and New Zealand this December, but come March 3rd, the band will be playing a show at Brooklyn's own Music Hall of Williamsburg. Psychedelic folk ladies (and one guy) Warpaint open. Tickets go on sale AmEx presale Wednesday, November 11th at noon. General sale starts Friday, Nov. 13th at noon.

LA's Warpaint were another buzzy band this past CMJ. Their signing was announced soon after...

We at Rough Trade are happy to announce the signing of LA quartet Warpaint.

Warpaint weave intricate guitar lines, hypnotic vocals and driving post punk rhythms into gorgeous, sprawling songs that skirt the line between psychedelia and intimacy.

At the core of the band are founding members Emily Kokal, Theresa Wayman and Jenny Lee Lindberg who formed the band in 2007.

"We are all very excited about being involved with such a unique and inspiring group and we welcome them to the label".

A 6 track EP Exquisite Corpse will be available in the USA this October and UK & Europe in November through Manimal Vinyl. Rough Trade will be releasing a full length album next year.

Grab two Warpaint tracks for free above.

Akron/Family's ATP NY set was their last "area" appearance. They write...

In the midst of this amazing tour we stopped off on the Borscht Belt to participate in the Flaming Lips curated ATP. It was a great weekend with one of the most mind/body/soul altering performances we have ever seen by the Boredoms. We also got to participate in Oneida's 10.5 hour performance on Sunday. We had the coveted early slot at noon.
A video of that, another live clip and all tour dates are below...

Arms (ex-Harlem Shakes) playing CD release show (full band) w/ Dave from Tokyo Police Club (solo acoustic) ++ MP3s

The face of Arms...
ARMS

Arms (Todd Goldstein, guitar player of the defunct Harlem Shakes) will be playing a NYC CD release show at Pianos on Thursday, November 12th for his full-length debut, Kids Aflame, which is out now on Gigantic Music. Two songs from the record are posted above, with a video and info below. Goldstein debuted his three-piece band that fills out his bedroom-recorded album at CMJ this year.

Strange Glue: Have you been to CMJ before and what are your thoughts about playing such a vibrant festival?

Todd: I've played several CMJs, now - although I have to say i've never been to a CMJ show other than my own. I never have time.

SG: Is it just you performing the Arms set or are you joined by any other talented musicians?

Todd: It'll be me, a drummer, and a bassist/singer. The harmonies alone are worth the price of admission.

Tickets for the Pianos show are on sale.

Also at the gig will be an acoustic set by Dave Monks, frontman of Tokyo Police Club. Monks will be playing some songs off Tokyo Police Club's forthcoming, second record, due in early 2010 on mom+pop.

mom+pop was formed in 2008 by Cliff Burnstein, Peter Mensch and Michael Goldstone. Burnstein and Mensch are the owners of Qprime, one of music's most respected management firms, with a roster featuring the likes of Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Snow Patrol, Muse, Silversun Pickups, and The Mars Volta, among others. Goldstone is a veteran A&R exec whose most recent tenure at Sire saw him sign Regina Spektor and Tegan and Sara. In August 2008, he inked Joshua Radin as the first artist on the mom+pop label. Radin's album, Simple Times, released 21 days later on September 9, has since sold over 100,000 units and 400, 000 tracks. Other mom+pop artists include An Horse, signed to the label by Sara Quin of Tegan and Sara. mom+pop is a fully staffed label distributed independently by RED.
Radical Dads, another group that shares members (Robbie and Chris are in Uninhabitable Mansions, and Robbie, again, plays with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah), are also playing, with Sherlock's Daughter (who have a residency at the club) opening.

Dave Monks recently posted a cover he did of Harlem Shakes' "Strictly Game," as well as a new TPC song. Those and more Arms below...
