Hmm.... who's guitar rig could this be?
SUNN O)))So, TWO new sunn o))) records, a Khanate, AND an Æthenor record! We knew that sunn 0))) was working on a new record, but a quick search turned up that Blast First (Petite) will drop that sunn 0))) and Pan Sonic pic 10". On further review, Æthenor's website reveals the following:
Che (SUNN O))) & Pan Sonic do a Suicide cover, pic 10" 2009)
Dimensions (TBA) (2xCD & 2xLP 2009)
Faking Gold & Murder (CD & LP 2008)
Clean Hands Go Foul (LP & Picture Disc 2008, CD & CD Japan 2009)
David Tibet sings and contributes lyrics on the forthcoming Æthenor album; other guests are Kristoffer Rygg (Ulver) and long time Æthenor collaborator Alexander Tucker [who just played ATP].Most importantly though, what the hell is that Khanate record Clean Hands Go Foul?!? Stephen O'Malley had this to say:
The long lost 4th KHANATE album Clean Hands Go Foul will finally emerge later this year. This was recorded directly after the Capture & Release album at Bisi Studio Brooklyn February 2005.James Plotkin, bassist for Khanate, posted one unreleased song excerpt to his website, "Wings From Spine" which is downloadable above. Will "Wings" appear on Clean Hands Go Foul? Who knows, but in the meantime prepare for the thundering evil doom of the mighty Khanate! On a related note, Plotkin's Khlyst, is taking orders for Chaos Live, a multicamera live DVD shot at Hydra Head's CMJ show in 2006. While you're there, pick up Boris's limited-to-1000 Floorshaker 12".
Mastodon's Brent Hinds had a little run-in with King Khan over the weekend, and while we have heard King Khan's side of the story, ridiculous pictures included, we haven't heard a peep from Brent Hinds. My thoughts echo that of one astute Blabbermouth reader: "The real victim here is the beer". Brann Dailor of Mastodon was recently interviewed by Metal Injection.
Justin Broadrick (Jesu, ex-Godflesh) dropped a bombshell of sorts.... a new project, Grey Machine, featuring Aaron Turner (Isis), Diarmuid Dalton (Jesu), and Dave Cochrane (Transitional)! From the upcoming album Disconnected, the band posted "Vultures Rise" available for download above!
Crom is back on the west coast, but evidence from their east coast killing spree is popping up all over the net. Check out pics from their show in Worcester, MA at Return To The Pit, an interview with a shirtless Crom at Vice magazine, as well as audio (and video below) from their appearance at WFMU.

These United States are currently four guys that come from three of the best Lexington-related bands. Jesse writes the These United States songs, Mark plays as Vandaveer, and Robbie and Justin are two-thirds of Scourge of the Sea (and 100% of Fanged Robot). So if you're from Lexington, this is almost as much of a supergroup as the New Pornographers or Broken Social Scene. And even though they might not have a fraction of those bands' fame, to judge solely on Saturday's performance, they've already started playing with a level of energy that suggests that nobody bothered to tell them.NY's turn. These United States are in town to play two NYC shows - tonight (9/29) at Cake Shop and then Tuesday at Union Hall. If you miss them this time around, I believe they'll be back for CMJ. DOWNLOAD: Clues - Perfect Fit (MP3)
The Unicorns have attained a mystique since their break-up in 2005. Since that time, Nick Thorburn, has been anything but low key, launching Islands, Th' Cornn Gang Human Highway with Jim Guthrie, and even Juiced Elfers. What might be lost on all of this activity is that Thorburn wasn't the only creative drive behind The Unicorns spazz-pop.
The other ex-Unicorn, Alden Penner, has been making music in Montreal for a long time, in various projects including Adam and Alden, All Makes Parts and Collision and his solo work, which is what he'll be performing on October 4th at this year's Pop Montreal festival. He opens for Dominique Grange and Jacques Tardi.
At last year's Pop, Alden introduced Clues, a project featuring Brendan Reed (formerly of Arcade Fire) and Bethany Or. They're currently finishing an album with producer Mark Lawson (Arcade Fire, The Unicorns, Islands, Beirut, Final Fantasy) - to be released at Villa Villa Nola and on Constellation Records in winter 2008.
Alden's music is wistful, gentle, and a little bit quirky. Imagine the Unicorns with the volume turned down. He plays with pop music conventions in a manner that would suggest that he's taking the piss out of everything, but like Beck you can hear the amount of effort put into each song. Though he doesn't have much in the way of "official" releases, there is a 7" he released on Art School Dropout in 2005, and he scored the soundtrack to The Hamster Cage. There are also many bootlegs floating around the net. I strongly recommended you to check 'em out. One MP3 is available for download above.

DOWNLOAD: Fuck Buttons - Colours Move (Mogwai remix) (MP3)
by Black Bubblegum, photo by Zach Dilgard
Fuck Buttons, aka Andrew Hung and Benjamin John Power, may only have one LP to their name, but it's a doozy. Recorded by John Cummings (Mogwai) & Tim Cedar (Part Chimp) and mastered by Shellac-ian madman/producer extraordinaire Bob Weston, Street Horrsing managed to impress both critics and fans alike with a unique combination of post-rock dynamics, power-electronics, and tribalism viewed through the lens of highly evolved pop. The success of Street Horrsing lead the band to land opening slots with Caribou, Deerhunter, Stars Of The Lid, Liars (at McCarren Pool), and most recently, a US tour with Mogwai which landed the band at ATP New York.
It's been striking me every night since we started (3 days ago) how beautiful a pairing it is, with Mogwai and ourselves. Those guys are constantly putting a smile on my face as i watch them every night. Their music is so internal but their volumous dynamic pounds that feeling ferociously. Stephen whom we traveled with previously on the Caribou tour, has been doing their sound and making them sound otherwordly. John (from Mogwai) has been doing our sound and from the sounds of it, he's been making us sound great (Thank you John). The comradery on this tour so far has been excellent in fact, and i'm enjoying the evolution of the relationships. Apart from Barry Burns. He's constantly trying to bully us or belittle us, telling us that we should get proper keyboards and how he can play piano and flute and guitar and anything made by God's hands and then asking what we can play... Just kidding, he can't playing anything...It was at ATP that we caught up with Fuck Buttons for a few minutes to ask them about their thoughts on the festival and some of their plans for the future...
Hope everyone is well back home.

Marnie Stern's new album
These Are Powers will kick off a two-month-long tour with a pair of NYC dates this weekend. On Saturday (9/27), the band (which must be mentioned includes ex-Liars Pat Noecker) plays the Silent Barn with Marnie Stern, Neptune, and Screaming Females, 7PM, all ages, $7.
These Are Powers recently signed to Dead Oceans who will be re-releasing the band's Taro Tarot and Terrific Seasons. I'd especially recommend a look at Taro Tarot, which takes TAP's avant-nosie-rock to a cleaner, more streamlined place. Check out TAP's tour blog at Other Music.
Marnie Stern, the headliner for Saturday's show, will be, according to Todd P, "debuting her new band!" She's also set to play another NYC show at the Cake Shop on Wed, Oct 22 (during CMJ), before heading out west for a 10-date tour with Gang Gang Dance.
Marnie Stern's newest, This Is It and I Am It and You Are It and So Is That and He Is It and She Is It and It Is It and That Is That (art above), the follow-up to her great 2007 debut, is available for pre-order at Kill Rock Stars. Pre-orders ship with a limited edition coloring book by BK artist Bella Foster.

Al Cisneros & Emil Amos
Om is the brainchild of Al Cisneros. In the wake of Sleep's dissolution, Al founded Om with his former Sleep and Asbestosdeath band-mate Chris Hakius. Sleep's guitarist Matt Pike went on to form High On Fire. Over five years, Om has carved a unique path... retaining the doom appeal of Sleep, while forging a new somber, yet also oddly calming tone over the course of three studio albums and various vinyl releases. Chris Hakius recently left the group, but was quickly replaced by drummer Emil Amos of former Om tourmates Grails.
Emil Amos is a juggler. Besides Grails and his new venture with Om, Amos also has a solo project called Holy Sons. Of course, Al Cisneros is also on the move, most recently forging an indie metal supergroup of sorts called Shrinebuilder - a four piece with Scott "Wino" Weinrich (of Saint Vitus, Hidden Hand, The Obsessed, many others), Scott Kelly (of Neurosis and Blood & Time), and Dale Crover (of Melvins and Porn).
Om was one of many bands who performed at the ATP festival at Kutscher's resort in upstate NY this past weekend. While there, we were able to coax the duo into taking a ride with us in one of the "sea nymphs", aka rowboats, on Kutsher's Lake. Along the way we paddled, and poked and prodded the band about Om, Shrinebuilder and their many other projects including, "Gebel Barkal", a limited Sub Pop 7" they recently put out (both songs from it are available for download on the top of this post). Among other things, we also found out about an electrician who happens to be very talented on the guitar.
Warning, if you have an aversion to poor yachting, please look away now.

DOWNLOAD: Adventure - Battle Cat (MP3)
Like FirestARTer before them, Crystal Castles and Adventure are 8-bit artists that don't rely on kitsch and nostalgia to buoy the songs. They are reframing the perception of the sounds used and putting emotion in, whether that be anarchism or affection. Adventure's music is certainly the latter, with pulsing dance beats wrapped up in NES and Genesis sounds.
Adventure is Benny Boeldt, a North Carolina native who relocated to Baltimore and hooked up with the Wham City crew including Dan Deacon who he'll be playing in round robin style with on a tour that includes Pop Montreal on October 5th and a show at (le) poisson rouge in NYC on October 18th. Adventure crafts pops songs on a grand scale. There is an epic quality that consistently builds through every song. To use an obvious video game analogy, every song sounds like a boss stage.
Adventure's self-titled album was released this week on Carpark and Benny is on a tour that his him playing four NYC-area shows this week including one tonight (Sept 25) at Crash Mansion. Album cover and tracklist, and all tour dates below...
Such tumultuous times. And in the spirit of giveaways that seem to be sweeping the nation, we've got something free for you. No it's not a pile of cash (sorry) but rather an audio postcard of sorts from a summer's night in Oregon with our friends the Fleet Foxes & a lovely Bob Dylan tune. All we ask is you check the "I pledge to vote in the 2008 Election" button below. If you can spare it, we also encourage you to consider a donation to Feeding America . (and please feel free to pass this link along to friends, family members, etc.). [WILCO]Wilco have two NYC shows coming up at MSG.
Fleet Foxes have two NYC shows coming up too.
DOWNLOAD: The Phenomenal Handclap Band - Testimony (MP3)
In the midst of popular electronic-based production teams such as Justice and DFA, Embassy Sound Productions (ESP) emerges with a fresh approach to dance-oriented rock and roll, using live instrumentation to evoke the intricate arrangements of Norman Whitfield, Quincy Jones, and Phil Spector as well as the pared down beats of contemporaries like The Neptunes and Danger Mouse.I was going to list a whole bunch of keywords that come to mine when listening to the The Phenomenal Handclap Band, but I think they have it covered. Maybe throw in 'B movie soundtrack' (I mean that in a good way). Their unsigned, unreleased album also features contributions by (in addition to who they already mentioned) members of Antibalas, Oakley Hall, the Dap Kings, Amy Winehouse's band, Diamond Nights, Persephone's Bees and Apollo Heights. The people in the picture (can you name any?) are the core group of the band. So far the collective has only played one show. Tonight (Thursday September 25th) is their second. I think there will be 12 people on stage. Details below...
ESP is Daniel Collás and Sean Marquand, two New York underground club DJs who became restless with the concept of playing other people's music. Having been involved with and disenchanted by the local rock and roll scene, they began to focus on producing.
Their initial projects resuscitated the respective careers of two veteran soul acts (New York's Joe Bataan and Brazil's União Black) and garnered critical acclaim, leading Daniel & Sean to set their sights on The Phenomenal Handclap Band, a supergroup comprised of a "who's who" of the indie rock and underground soul scenes. Members of such diverse bands as TV on the Radio, L'Trimm, Calla, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Mooney Suzuki, and Sí Se all contribute their individual talents to the album.
The Phenomenal Handclap Band sound is an anthemic, dancefloor-oriented blend of progressive rock, disco, electro, and '60s soul with sprinklings of hip hop-styled orchestral breakbeats and moody, synth-heavy hooks.
