Covering a Russian folk-punk legend virtually unknown in the west is an odd choice for a sophomore album (especially when you choose to sing in Russian), but Alina Simone brings Yanka Dyagileva's music to life in Everyone Is Crying Out to Me Beware. In the most daring release of the year, Simone chooses not to mimic Dyagileva's style but to put her own stamp on these songs with her powerful voice and artful arrangements that frame the lyrics perfectly. Last night after I read that one of my personal heroes, Aleksander Solzenhitsyn, had passed away, it was these songs (along with fragments of his prose) that echoed in my head until sleep took hold. Her CD release show is August 8th at Union Hall in Brooklyn.

The Airborne Toxic Event's self-titled debut is out tomorrow, a strong effort from a band that took their name from Don DeLillo's novel, White Noise...

Other new releases I have heard and can strongly recommend this week include Clinic's Funf, Conor Oberst's self-titled album, The Faint's Fasciination, Ida's My Fair, My Dark EP, and Oxford Collapse's Bits.

The two Gang of Four remastered discs (Hard and Songs of the Free) are on my shopping list. Other reissues of note include Scott Walker: Til the Band Comes In, Verbena's Souls for Sale, and the Waterboys' remastered Room to Roam (complete with bonus disc).

U2This week, Amazon releases an exclusive 6-CD box set of the three U2 remastered albums (with bonus discs) released last week, Boy, October, and War.

Among a weekly release list filled with vinyl reissues, the only other new albums I have heard and can strongly recommend are Neil Halstead's (of Mojave 3) solo album, Oh! Mighty Engine and Wild Sweet Orange's We Have Cause to Be Uneasy.

Sonic Youth's SYR8: Andre Sider At Sonic Youth presents the band's 2005 Roskilde Festival performance with Mats Gustafsson and Merzbow.

Other than the U2 remastered box set, the vinyl reissues dominate this week's release list. The double album edition of Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, which includes a copy of the album on CD, is definitely worth picking up if you don't have the album already.

Paul WellerFormer Jam and Style Council frontman Paul Weller releases his latest solo effort, 22 Dreams, stateside tomorrow, a disc that features guest appearances by Noel Gallagher, Graham Coxon, and others.

Other albums I can strongly recommend include the Avett Brothers' Second Gleam, Benji Hughes' debut double album A Love Extreme, Bodies of Water's A Certain Feeling, Faun Fables' A Table Forgotten EP, Helena Espvall and Masaki Batoh's self-titled album, and PAS/CAL's Raised on Mathew, Mark, Luke & Laura.

For the literary minded indie rock fan, Chamber Music: James Joyce collects Mercury Rev, the Minus 5, Kinski, and others interpreting James Joyce's 1907 collection of poems. Best of Janis Ian - The Autobiography Collection, also available tomorrow, can be seen as the soundtrack to the singer-songwriter's autobiography, Society's Child (out Thursday, look for a Largehearted Boy Book Notes essay from Janis Ian then).

The 9 4AD remastered SACD albums by Dead Can Dance share the reissue spotlight this week with remastered editions of U2's Boy, October, and War (all available as single CDs, with bonus CD, and on vinyl). Julie Doiron's Loneliest in the Morning, an album I truly adore, is also reissued this week with bonus tracks.

Editor's note: CSS, Dr. Dog, High Places, Forward, Russia, Black Kids all also have new albums this week - as you can see from the list below....

The Hold SteadyThe Hold Steady's fourth album, Stay Positive, is released tomorrow.

In his New York magazine profile of the band, Joshua Ferris wrote of Stay Positive:

For anyone new to the Hold Steady looking for a point of breaking and entering on Stay Positive, start with "Sequestered in Memphis." It's as immediate and infectious as "Your Little Hoodrat Friend." The same goes for the title track. Musically, two songs are real standouts: a guitar solo provides a plaintive wail on behalf of the rocky couple on "Lord, I'm Discouraged," while the harpsichord becomes the voice of the protagonist on "One for the Cutters." The instruments aid and abet Finn as he articulates the inner turmoil of his characters' lives.
Other than Stay Positive, the only other new releases I have heard and can strongly recommend are the new Wire disc, Object 47, Blind Pilot's 3 Rounds and a Sound and Herman Dune's 1-2-3 Apple Tree EP.

Three Del Fuegos albums (Boston, Mass., The Longest Day, and Stand Up) lead the week's reissues, along with two vinyl releases (Rocky Votolato and Suicide Medicine) from singer-songwriter Rocky Votolato. Damon & Naomi's More Sad Hits has been remastered and is also available tomorrow.

Beck Modern GuiltOne of my most anticipated albums of the year, Beck's Modern Guilt, drops tomorrow.

The most interesting release this week combines three of my favorite things, baseball, Steve Wynn, and Scott McCaughey (The Minus 5, Young Fresh Fellows). The Baseball Project: Volume 1: Frozen Ropes and Dying Quails brings these talented musicians together to share their love of America's pastime in song.

Other discs I have heard and can strongly recommend include CocoRosie's God Has a Voice, She Speaks Through Me 7", The Capstan Shafts' wonderfully lo-fi Fixation Protocols, Dutchess & The Duke's She's The Dutchess, He's The Duke, Patti Smith & Kevin Shields' collaboration The Coral Sea, and Ratatat's LP3.

I am definitely picking up the Fiery Furnaces' vinyl reissues of Blueberry Boat, The Fiery Furnaces EP, and Gallowsbird's Bark on vinyl. Other vinyl reissues I am buying include British Sea Power's Open Season; Xiu Xiu's Fabulous Muscles
La Foret, and my favorite M. Ward album, Transfiguration of Vincent.

What new music releases have you excited this week? Have any let you down?

EarlimartThe smallest release week of the summer offers a generous amount of reissues, but the only new release I can recommend is Hymn and Her by Earlimart.

Two notable import box sets are out this week. Leonard Cohen: Collection collects five of the poet-singer-songwriters albums (Songs of Leonard Cohen (1968), Various Positions (1985), I'm Your Man (1988), The Future (1992) and Ten New Songs (2001). The Sugarcubes' 6-CD Singles Box Set is a bit pricey, I'll pick it up when it is released stateside.

Other reissues out this week include five Van Morrison remastered albums with bonus tracks (The Healing Game, Live at the Grand Opera House Belfast, A Night in San Francisco, No Guru, No Method, No Teacher, Veedon Fleece), Centro-matic's Redo the Stacks, the White Stripes' White Blood Cells and self-titled album, and Willie Nelson's Stardust: 30th Anniversary Legacy Edition (complete with bonus CD).

Alejandro EscovedoAlejandro Escovedo releases his ninth solo album tomorrow, Real Animal, a disc he calls his most rocking solo effort yet.

Other discs I can strongly recommend include Sigur Ros's fifth album, Meo suo i eyrum vio spilum endalaust (With a Buzz in Our Ears We Play Endlessly), Amos Lee's Last Days At the Lodge, Electric President: Sleep Well, Hercules And Love Affair's self-titled debut, and the Watson Twins' Fire Songs.

Among the week's reissues, Liz Phair's Exile in Guyville has been remastered and is repackaged with some unreleased songs and a bonus DVD (and is fresh off a 9.6 review at Pitchfork).

Among vinyl reissues is a red vinyl copy of the Flaming Lips' Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, a 180-gram edition of the Drive-By Truckers' Brighter than Creation's Dark, and even a repressing of Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.

What new releases have you excited this week? Are there any releases worth adding to the list?

PonytailIndie rock's premiere poet Dave Berman returns with his latest Silver Jews disc, Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea this week. This disc, along with Wolf Parade's sophomore album, At Mount Zoomer, head up yet another strong summer music release week.

Other new releases I can strongly recommend this week include Eef Barzelay's (of Clem Snide) Lose Big, Impossible Shapes' self-titled album, My Brightest Diamond's A Thousand Shark's Teeth, Ponytail's Ice Cream Spiritual, Tilly and the Wall's O, and War on Drugs' Wagonwheel Blues.

I loved Bowerbirds' Hymns for a Dark Horse so much when it was first released last summer that I included it on my list of 2007 favorite albums. Dead Oceans is reissuing the disc this week with two bonus tracks. If you haven't heard it yet, give the album a listen and find out why the Mountain Goats' John Darnielle said of the band, "Only once every ten years or so does one hear a new band this good, this bursting with ideas, this audibly in love with music."

Another interesting reissue is Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson's Pacific Ocean Blue, which is available for the first time on CD in a special edition, 2-disc set.

What new releases have you excited this week? Are there any releases worth adding to the list?

My Morning JacketMy Morning Jacket releases Evil Urges this week. Along with the new disc, the band is reissuing its At Dawn and The Tennessee Fire albums on vinyl this week too.

There are plenty of other worthwhile discs out this week. From what I have already heard, I can definitely recommend cellist-singer-songwriter Ben Sollee's Learning to Bend, along with Haley Bonar's Big Star, the Lexie Mountain Boys' wonderfully inventive Sacred Vacation, Martha Wainwright's I Know You're Married But I've Got Feelings, Too, Priscilla Ahn's A Good Day, Sloan's Parallel Play, and Gigantic: A Tribute to Kim Deal.

Among the handful of reissues this week, I will be picking up the two Love discs, False Start and Out Here. Other reissues of note include Husker Du's The Living End and Dinosaur Jr.'s Hand It Over

What new releases have you excited this week? Are there any releases worth adding to the list?

ShearwaterGiven the quality of the music releases, this has to be my favorite release week of the year so far. I can definitely see a couple of these releases on my year-end list of favorite albums. First and foremost Shearwater's Rook is as strong an album as I have heard all year. Another stellar release is the Centro-matic/South San Gabriel double album, Dual Hawks.

Other albums I have heard and can strongly recommend include Fleet Foxes' self-titled album, Aimee Mann's @#%&! Smilers, Ladytron's Velocifero, Oppenheimer's Take the Whole Midrange and Boost It, and Weezer's Weezer (Red Album).

Radiohead's The Best of is also out this week in three different options: a 1-CD edition, a 2-CD edition, and a 4-album vinyl edition.

What are you picking up this week? Are there any releases worth adding to the list?
