St. Vincent interviews John Vanderslice (on the road)

Last time Annie Clark (St. Vincent) and John Vanderslice checked in, it was John interviewing Annie. This time around Annie asked John some questions....

John & Annie in Chicago - Apr 13, 2007 (CRED)
John Vanderslice & Annie Clark

Annie Clark: This first part is free association: "the banality of evil":
John Vanderslice: is perfectly understandable

AC: "Keith Richards"
JV: doesn't live by our/your morals.

AC: Complete this phrase: "Out of ____, out of ____."
JV: "Out of Mind, Out of Sight." A crucial Buffy episode (SE1, EP11) in which Angel rescues the Scoobies. It changed my life.

John Vanderslice interviews St. Vincent (on the road)

St Vincent

If you were at the John Vanderslice / St. Vincent (Annie Clark) show Sunday night at Union Hall, you witnessed (and heard) an awesome two performances that included Peter Hughes from the Mountain Goats, Matthew Caws from Nada Surf, and Annie all joining John on stage for various songs including a finale where John and Annie sang real-quiet-and-beautiful-like in the center of the audience. You also heard John promise everyone an interview he conducted with Annie. He probably did it in a venue, or in the tour van, or at a Denny's/Cracker Barrel/Waffle House, or maybe at a gas station, or....

That interview, and more pictures from the show, below....

Tonight's (April 19) Mercury Lounge show is sold out, but tickets are now on sale for a 2nd NYC show at Union Hall in Brooklyn on April 22nd. And now, heeeere's Johnny....

John Vanderslice & St Vincent

Hotel Life, Best and Worst:
I have no problem understanding why Russell Crowe hurled a phone at a hotel desk clerk. i wonder why these things don't happen more often. When you rely on these unstable businesses to provide comfort and consolation, you are vulnerable to say the least.

Best:
We stayed in a brand new Hampton Inn in Athens, OH. I would have been quite happy to have my books and records shipped out and camp there for a year or so. I went to sleep thinking: "What nice tile work in the bathroom!"

Worst:
The next night we stayed in a creepy hell-hole in Lancaster. Serious central PA rednecks, the kind that look down at your shoes before answering a question (I guess my Tigers didn't pass). A sign in the room listed 14 conditions for using the pool:

#13. Any person showing evidence of any communicable skin disease, sore or inflamed eyes, cold, nasal or ear discharges, or any other disease shall be denied access to the pool. Any person with excessive sunburn(!), open blisters, cuts, or bandages shall be denied admission.

#14. No lifeguard on duty. SWIM AT YOUR OWN RISK.
Beautiful. So, after we had to move rooms due to several unsatisfactory unmentionables, repeatedly made them restart their wireless router, were forced to eat Raisin Bran with warm skim milk, and endured heaps of bad vibes, I had no choice but to smash my room phone into bits. It was seriously beaten into non-functionality. My only regret was not packing it in my Samsonite and giving it away as a door prize at the club in Philly the next night - Johnny Brenda's, which by the way, has got to be one of the best sounding small clubs in the nation.

John Vanderslice and St Vincent (Annie Clark) are on tour. The other day John kicked off this Brooklyn Vegan blogging series with a post from the road. Now here is Annie's first correspondence....

St Vincent

Pacific Northwest, you are so ruling it! When I was a teenager growing in Texas, and the internet still had the stigma of being only for freaks and weirdos (the subject of many a "Sally Jessy Raphael" episode), I would spend hours checking out bands on the Kill Rock Stars website. (Uh-oh…A recent look at the KRS site shows that it may not have changed at all since 1996...) At any rate, I had in mind that Portland, Seattle, and Olympia were the holy trifecta of awesome, the Petri dish of progressive culture, the coveted antithesis of everything Texas. I think my teenage fantasy was correct…Pacific Northwest, you are so ruling it!

Speaking of ruling, JV is the tops. I'm trying to convince him that he needs a wan, pale, curly haired "Annie"-named guest bass player…

On the Road w/ John Vanderslice part 1 (+ free remix album)

DOWNLOAD: John Vanderslice - Letter to the East Coast (remixed) (MP3) (more)

John Vanderslice and St. Vincent (Annie) kicked off their Spring 2007 Tour this past Friday at Doug Fir Lounge in Portland, Oregon. Both John and Annie will be publishing reports from the road, right here on Brooklyn Vegan. Here's the first installment...

John Vanderslice

It's been a year since we toured the States, and I've forgotten how lovely this country is. We're speeding through the treacherous hills of Grant's Pass in southern Oregon, and the van is pitching and rolling like a fishing boat in the Atlantic. The inside of the van is lit with the dull glow of iBooks. I'm watching the excellent The Wind That Shakes the Barley. Dan Brennan's phone modem is giving him a healthy 28k, enough to email and surf in slow-motion.

It's dusk, the windows are open, the van is filled with that heavy scent of Pacific madrone. We crest over the pass and drop into an ocean of Douglas-fir and ponderosa pine.

On this tour, we've asked audience members to come up and sing lead and play bass with us. The pleasure of seeing their face as they grab the mic and look out on the crowd!! UNREAL. Brandon, who sang "Letter to the East Coast" in Seattle had never been on stage before. He came up and *owned* it. The night before, Craig tossed his lyrics in the air during the middle of the second verse and the crowd went nuts.
