Julia Kent

As usual, I fell behind and never got to fully write about how excited I am for the lineup upstairs at Pianos this afternoon (free - starts @ noon, @ Pianos, BrooklynVegan party). So real quick: You've got singer-songwriter/GNR cover band member Dave Godowsky opening up the show - his ony area appearance. Following him is Orba Squara, who among other things, is known for the song in the iPhone commercial. Then Marla Hansen of Sufjan/National/Kanye fame. Then Scott Matthew - known for having songs in soundtracks like Shortbus & Ghost in the Shell - he has a beautiful, beautiful voice. Then JULIA KENT - an amazing, solo cello player that is gaining popularity in Europe, and who also happens to be a member of Antony & The Johnsons, and who was in Rasputina, etc, etc... Then DOVEMAN. Then Tim Bracy of the Mendoza Line (who was supposed to play later). Then Craig Wedren - formerly of Shudder to Think. Then finally Erik Friedlander (who was supposed to play earlier) - "now one of the world's top cellists".
And on top of all that - great bands playing downstairs for free too - like Turbo Fruits, Foals, and The Maccabees! go now. bye.

I (david bruno) first became aware of Chicago's Walter Meego (band, not dude) a few summers back when their infectious "Romantic" track was making the rounds across the interworld. Their quirky, electronic pop feels not dissimilair to Hot Chip, but starting with more of a rock angle. Music.for-Robots Mark said, "They're really doing some interesting stuff, blending the dark electronic with the Chicago post rock. It's the type of sound that makes so much sense in today's current scene, but rarely executed this well."
I reached out to them and brought them to do a DJ set here in New York. Since then, they've played live here many times and released singles for "Romantic" and "Hollywood," got a Switch and Sinden remix, toured the country with VHS or Beta, and gone through some line-up changes. All the while, they've recorded a full length album and got signed to Almost Gold Recordings (home to Peter Bjorn & John and Calvin Harris). Their album is due out early next year, but the boys are romping through CMJ this week (including a set last night opening for UNKLE at Webster Hall). Saturday night (Oct 20) they're playing our DANCE party on Saturday night. Their full schedule is below. Get to 205 early on Saturday night to catch Walter Meego and Thunderheist!
Speaking of Walter Meego's line-up changes: one of the founding members of the band, Jarrett Spiegel left to delve into his own electronic production. Still based in Chicago, Jarrett together with San rancisco-based Salva, record as Popstatic. Jarrett is in town this week to DJ TODAY (OCT 19) at the Brooklyn Vegan day party at R Bar and at DANCE at 205 on Saturday night. For more on Popstatic, check out this previous feature on my site.

the week in Dance w/ David Bruno (10/17/07) (part 1)
Digitalism @ Studio B, NYC (CRED)

Lots of moaning going on about CMJ this year, but you can't deny that DANCE is a big factor in this years' Marathon.
Big official CMJ shows with Simian Mobile Disco, New Young Pony Club (Tickets), MSTRKRFT (Tickets), and Justice (along with this little column here) leave no doubt that this past year has been a big year for DJs and bands with a beat.
Last week some dance acts got off to an early start on Thursday night: Digitalism played Studio B and set the place on fire (or at least attracted the FDNY), !!! punk-funked Webster Hall (more photos), and Moby DJ'd at Hiro. Photos of Moby at Driven by Boredom. James Murphy and Annie Mac DJ'd at Hiro BAllroom last night.
Outside of the big CMJ shows be sure to catch (in no particular order) one of the Black Ghosts sets at the BV party or at the Delancey (I hear Simon will be singing while they DJ their tracks), A-Trak and DJ Medhi tag-teaming at Hiro on Wednesday (tonight) should be legendary, Erol Alkan dropping rock tracks for the ravers at the 3rd Fixed Anniversary at Studio B on Saturday with special guests, MIA gives you two chances to catch her at Terminal 5, James Lavelle brings UNKLE to Webster on Thursday, David E. Sugar, King Oppression, and Walter Meego at our show at 205 on Saturday night, and Muscles plays both Modular parties (Studio B with NYPC and 200 Orchard on Friday). Also tonight: Dragonette at the Canal Room and the boys and girls from Big Stereo finally touch down in NYC at Studio B with Thunderheist. Ghostland Observatory brought a laser to their last show at the Bowery, find out what they bring to Webster on Friday night.
Don't forget to RSVP For our Saturday night party. More about that later (coming in part 2).

FREE Red Bull, Svedka vodka & bloody marys today 12-2

Drink free Red Bull, Red Bull mixed with Svedka vodka, and bloody marys. The open bar today ends at 2pm, but then it's still happy hour all day (drink specials for the Friday & Saturday partys TBA). See you there!

Miracle Fortress were denied at the border!!
People from CMJ are trying to still get Miracle Fortress into the United States from Canada, but it looks like it's going to take a miracle (PUN INTENDED) to get them here at this point, and they're DEFINITELY not making it for 8pm - their set time at Bowery Ballroom tonight (me = crying). Bon Iver is now going on at 7, and The Shaky Hands are playing at 8, and everything else runs exactly on time. IF Miracle Fortress do make it, we'll let them play after Voxtrot at 1am. I'm not sure that's very likely though. They were supposed to play SoundFix tomorrow too. :-(

Muddd says Bowery is okay, but Cheeseburger calls

Why Muddd didn't go see Voxtrot @ Music Hall of Williamsburg:
Show: Voxtrot at Northsix for YuppiesWhy Muddd isn't going to Bowery Ballroom tonight:
Why I'm not going: I'm fucking tired and not terribly psyched about going back to "Music Hall of Williamsburg." Never mind that the place is as clean (and has as much character) as a movie theater at the mall, the staff there is a total bunch of assholes. Last show I saw there (Boris with Damon and Naomi) I saw a bouncer kick a couple out for -- get this -- crouching against a wall. Fuck this place. Fuck it right in the ass.
Show: Voxtrot and The Rosebuds (with many others) at Bowery BallroomCheck Muddd's blog for more CMJ recommendations. Check below for more Cheeseburger tour dates...

Timothy Bracy - formerly of Mendoza Line + Yep Roc @ CMJ
DOWNLOAD: Since I Came (MP3)
DOWNLOAD: Thirty Year Low (MP3)
DOWNLOAD: Aspect of an Old Maid (alt. take) (MP3)

....Over the years, The Mendoza Line has featured not one but several songwriters; the band's original musical cornerstone was the songs of founding members Timothy Bracy and Peter Hoffman. Other members included Lori Carrier, Margaret Maurice, Paul Deppler and Andres Galdames. In 2000, Shannon McArdle joined the outfit, and became a major contributor to the songwriting, beginning with that year's We're All In This Alone. 2002's Lost In Revelry continued the string of favorably reviewed, but poor-selling albums. After 2004's Fortune, Hoffman took a hiatus from the band, while Bracy and McArdle were married in 2005. That year the couple released an album, the more electronica-dappled The View From The Floor, as a duo under the name Slow Dazzle. Entertainment Weekly declared that 2005's Full of Light And Full of Fire contained "the prettiest protest songs imaginable." In a turn of events that recalls the story of their songwriting heroes Richard and Linda Thompson, Bracy and McArdle announced their divorce in 2007. The band will issue a final recording called 30 Year Low, along with a bonus disc combining covers, live tracks and rarities in August of 2007. [Wikipedia]Though a bit out of date, that Wikipedia entry sums up the sad story that is the Mendoza Line. The three MP3s (above) are all from that last album. Even more MP3's at their website.
In happier news, Timothy is still making music. His new band is called "Timothy Bracys Collection Agency", and you can catch him for free at my party upstairs at Pianos with Doveman and Craig Wedren on Saturday October 20th (6:15 pm). Tim's other CMJ show is a Yep Roc party on October 18th at the-soon-to-be-closed Mo Pitkins. Details on all of Yep Roc's CMJ happenings, below....

The official BrooklynVegan CMJ showcase at Bowery Ballroom is just one day away. This one:
BrooklynVegan CMJ showcase @ Bowery BallroomA few tickets are still on sale. There may also be some at the door, or you can use your CMJ badge.
October 16, 2007, NYC (the whole lineup)
6pm - Bon Iver ("recommended")
7pm - The Shaky Hands (not to be confused with...)
8pm - Miracle Fortress (those crazy Canadians)
9pm - Most Serene Republic (those crazy not actually Canadians)
10pm - Dean & Britta (Luna)
11pm - The Rosebuds (dance party)
12am - Voxtrot
I've also just finally put up an RSVP & flyer for the Saturday night (October 20th) afterparty I'm doing with David Bruno. We're still working out drink specials (hopefully open bar) and possibly one more artist for the bill, but anyway, check it out.
And then there are the three free day parties (no list, no RSVP, no badges necessary). That's what the flyer you see pictured above is all about. It says "returns" because my cornball tagline last year was "takes over the Lower East Side". The back of the flyer (which is being sent to the printer right now) has the scehdule, and you can view the most up to date version (with all 5 lineups), below.....
unofficial (click for a larger version)

Drink specials, DJs, and the one spot labeled "TBA" are all still being worked out. This post was supposed to say "open Svedka bar" including free (vegan) (not virgin) bloody marys at all day parties, but those final details are still being worked out, so (alcohol-drinking people) just keep your fingers crossed.
Stay tuned for more details (as usual!).
THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(a brief summary of the times and places of these five parties is here)
