Devendra Banhart stole my basketball (CRED)

Devendra Banhart's new album Vasu Deva Kutumbam is out later this year - probably some time around September 1st because that's when he kicks of a 1.5 month North American tour in Vancouver. Sō Percussion and MATMOS & playing Lincoln Center, writing THROBBING GRISTLE book, etc

From Matmos
We just got back from a bucolic recording session in Montana where we worked on a new collaborative sextet project with So Percussion, ate BBQ, and played a wild and beer-soaked show for the townsfolk of Whitefish. Having blown one deadline already, Drew is desperately pulling the manuscript of his book about Throbbing Gristle's "Twenty Jazz Funk Greats" for Continuum's 33 1/3 series into quasi-acceptability. Martin is squiggling away with his all synthesizer, all improv trio project Phase Chancellor (with Nate Boyce and a now-out-of-the-wheelchair Jay Lesser). Both Martin and Drew are gearing up for some apartment hunting adventures in Baltimore, Maryland, because Matmos is moving there as of August. But before that, we're bracing ourselves for a month of European touring this summer, including a set at the Roskilde Festival in Denmark. Citizens of New York City, please note that Matmos & So Percussion will be playing two shows at Lincoln Center this summer in honor of National Contact-Mic Awareness Month. The concerts will take place July 20th and July 21st, and each night will feature different special top secret guest stars, so you should go to both. Please come and show your support."Zeena Parkins and Dave Douglas are joining them for the NYC shows - not sure if they are the "top secret guest starts" they're talking about. If I had to guess, I'd say there's a good chance Antony is one of them. Tickets are on sale.

Múm Returns From Iceland With New Album After Three YearsSigur Ros book
Festival Dates to Follow This Summer and FallIt has been more than three years since the release of múm's last album Summer Make Good, and a lot of water has passed under the bridge. And now, finally, a string of European festival appearances heralds their long-awaited new album, strangely titled Go Go Smear The Poison Ivy, Let Your Crooked Hands Be Holy, due out September 25. A colorful, twitching, playful work of art, full of life-affirming energy, the album will be preceded by the single "They Made Frogs Smoke 'Til They Exploded" on August 28. A chirpy song about animal cruelty, it's backed with "The Amateur Show", described by the band as a wonky insect-circus instrumental.
With the departure of Kristín Valty´sdóttir at the beginning of the creative process, the core of múm is again down to the original duo of founding members Gunnar and Örvar, but the band itself is now larger than ever, counting in all seven people. The album was recorded at a variety of locations, including the music school in the small fishing town of Ísafjörur in the west fjords of Iceland, where the band made use of the school's various instruments. The songs on this multifarious album were conceived over a long period in many a different fashion, with one song even dating back to the period of Yesterday was dramatic, today is OK.
The strange, almost eerie artwork for Go Go Smear The Poison Ivy..., and "They Made Frogs Smoke..." is by Ingibjörg Birgisdóttir, who also animated the video for the single.

As you might remember, Jose G is paying New York a visit in August to play the Spiegeltent. Then one month later he comes back to start a tour that includes two shows at the Gramercy Theatre, and one at the new Music Hall of Williamsburg aka where Northsix used to be.
New album info, and tour dates, below.....
Beginning with a special preview show at the Spiegeltent in New York City's South Street Seaport on August 21st, González will kick off the first of two upcoming US solo tours on September 27th with three consecutive New York City appearances during the week of album release. On this upcoming tour González will be performing songs from his forthcoming record In Our Nature including the album's first single "Down The Line" which is set for a August 14, 2007 digital release in North America. Savath and Savalas and James Blackshaw will open for González on select dates.Performing seven times at SXSW in March 2006, González went on to sell out solo shows in virtually every major US market last year, in addition to performing at festivals such as Central Park Summerstage, Austin City Limits, Hollywood Bowl, Bumbershoot, the Intonation Music Festival, V Fest and most recently at the Coachella Music Festival in April 2007.
After concluding the first US tour in Minneapolis on October 13th, 2007, González will tour the UK and Europe. He will return to the US for a second tour beginning November 2007 (dates TBA).

SHARON JONES & The Dap Kings - new album & 2007 Tour Dates ++ shows TODAY & TOMORROW w/ Booker T
Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings @ the 2007 Moers Festival (CRED)

Speaking of the Dap Kings, Sharon Jones has a bunch of free NYC shows coming up - including one today, and one tomorrow with Booker T & the MG's. River to River's site describes tonight's (June 13 - 7pm) show like this:
This 1992 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, responsible for creating the spare and punchy “Memphis sound,” performs a soulful show with guest vocalist, “Queen of Funk,” Sharon Jones. It's a perfect (and free) alternative to Franz and Paul. BAM's website says this about tomorrow's Brooklyn show:
Booker T. & The MG's with special guest Sharon JonesThe Brooklyn show starts at noon - timed to coincide with your lunch hour.
June 14
As the studio band that backed Otis Redding and Sam and Dave, Booker T. and The MG's are true patriarchs of rock and roll—and the classic track "Green Onions" only furthered their fame in their own right. In a match made in soul heaven, Booker T. and band are joined by Sharon Jones of Dap-Kings fame, whose sound smolders like a hot night in her hometown of Augusta, Georgia.
All tour dates, and new album info, below......
Langerado 2007 - Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings
On September 25th, renowned Soul and Funk band Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings will release 100 Days, 100 Nights on their self-owned independent label, Daptone Records. Since the 2005 release of their Naturally LP, the band has continued to build a worldwide following for their raw soulful recordings and blistering live performances.Sharon Jones - 2007 Tour DatesLike the highly acclaimed Naturally LP before it, 100 Days, 100 Nights was recorded in their self-built, self-operated, all analog recording studio in Bushwick, Brooklyn and bares the unmistakable Daptone Soul Sound - highly in demand among music fans and tastemakers alike. In the last year, producers such as Kanye West, Mark Ronson, Hank Shocklee, and Kenny Dope have been among those who came knocking at Daptone's door seeking the inimitable Dap-Kings sound. The Dap-Kings lend a tougher edge to their own productions for such artists as Rhymefest, Lily Allen, Ghostface Killah and Amy Winehouse. Meanwhile, Sharon Jones herself has past the time between touring lending the her soulful voice to projects for Lou Reed, Rufus Wainwright, They Might Be Giants and others.
Though these projects have helped the band branch out to new fans, it is unquestionable that their sound has never been as brutally soulful or masterfully delivered as it is on their own 100 Days, 100 Nights. The raw fire and soul which Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings consistently pour into their music will make this record and this band an irreplaceable part of many people's lives.

FEIST & GRIZZLY BEAR & KEVIN DREW played Town Hall, playing Conan ++ BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE ("Spirit If") playing McCarren Pool (w/ Feist) & touring
First of all, the Feist & Grizzly Bear show at Town Hall last night (June 11, 2007) was so good. I can't decide if it was the best Grizzly Bear show I ever saw, but it was definitely beyond a doubt the best Feist show I've ever been to (I've seen them both a bunch of times now). Feist's new material is so much more fun live - the old stuff still felt like the hits, but the new stuff was where it was at...
Feist @ Town Hall, NYC - June 11, 2007

Grizzly Bear @ Town Hall, NYC - June 11, 2007

...and as if it wasn't special enough, (Leslie's boyfriend?) Kevin Drew came out to play Broken Social Scene's Lover's Spit with Feist - he didn't sing though - just played piano, but it still felt great.
A few more pics @ Flickr. More tomorrow.
Feist also mentioned she'd be playing 1234 on Conan today, and bringing some friends along to sing backup. At least some of those friends will be all four members of Grizzly Bear - her tourmates.
Feist didn't mention, but the little flyers they were handing out did, that she and Kevin Drew will be back to play a (NOT-free) show at McCarren Pool in Brooklyn on August 29th. Tickets are on sale Friday at noon, and the show is billed on the flyer as "Feist with special guest Broken Social Scene performing Kevin Drew's 'Spirit If...'".......
The press release that came out Friday....
On September 18th Arts&Crafts will release, BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE PRESENTS KEVIN DREW, "SPIRIT IF..."PreviouslyKevin Drew's "Spirit If..." was recorded over the last two years at Ohad Benchetrits house in between social scene tours and day-to-day life.It was produced by Ohad Benchetrit, Kevin Drew, and Charles Spearin.
This is the first in the BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE PRESENTS series.Brendan Canning and company are currently recording the second in Toronto. It will be released early next year.
Drew and Canning, the two co-founders of Broken Social Scene decided to approach making records as solo projects. In the process the social scene community took part and played key supporting roles, thus giving birth to this series.
Along with the BSS crew, Drew has invited many other guests to perform on "Spirit If...".
The record unfolds like aemotional comic book. It's Drew's song-writing and all his favourite topics are addressed: fucking, fighting, fearing and hope. FFFH.
This fall Kevin Drew, Brendan Canning, Justin Peroff, along with new members will commence the "BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE PERFORMS" touring series. They will tour select songs from this album and a others from this series.

Last time Frightened Rabbit (not to be confused with the NYC band White Rabbits) was in NYC I did manage to catch one of their shows - I just never posted about it before. HAPPY MONDAYS cancel shows due to VISA issues, but IN THE CITY OF NY lives on
Yvette Livesey & Tony Wilson's In the City Festival runs from June 13-14, 2007 (this week) right here in NYC. The festival is basically two days of music industry panels followed by two nights of UK music that was to include two shows by The Happy Mondays at Nokia Theatre, BUT as many know by now - possibly because they had tickets, or possibly because they were keeping up with the comments from yesterday, The Happy Mondays have cancelled both shows.
The Rakes & Pigeon Detectives has been moved to Knitting Factory. Tickets are on sale. Press release below...
In The City of New York announce Festival Changes The Happy Mondays cancel due to temporary visa issues The show will go on!Now as we know, one can always expect that along with the name Tony Wilson comes a little extra added drama.
If he didn’t let a thing such as cancer stand in the way of ITC of NY happening, he certainly isn’t going to let another curve ball stop the show! Now combine the names Tony Wilson and The Happy Mondays and your chances of a ‘little extra drama’, becomes slightly higher. With a new album “Unkle Dysfunktional” completed and tucked under their arms, the Happy Mondays were all set to come to the states to play their first NYC show in more than 10 years. The lads from Manchester planned to headline the In The City of NY festival for Tony Wilson, who they owe all of their original success in the late 80’s/ early 90’s. The shows would be a taster for fans of their new material, following hard on the heel's of their recent sold-out tour in the UK.
The US government has something else in mind.
Due to the unforeseen circumstance of that troubled word we are growing too familiar with, ‘VISA’, The Happy Mondays will not be coming to NYC as originally planned. Therefore they will not be performing at the Nokia as part of ITC of NY on the 13th in addition to their Nokia show on the 14th.
As we all know, The show must go on.
ITC of NY will announce updates shortly on venue changes for June 13th. The Rakes, who are about to unleash one of the most powerful albums of the year take the stage as headlining act, and kicking off the ITC music conference evening festivities are recent #3 UK album chart toppers, The Pigeon Detectives.
All Nokia Ticket holders will get full refunds at tickemaster or point of purchase. The new venue will guarantee admission for all delegate badge holders. Stay tuned for more information on venue changes!
On June 14th the UK’s current favorite band Biffy Clyro will headline the Highline Ballroom, along with the most sought after and much talked about Enter Shikari, and Blood Red Shoes round the night out with their new found fame.
It's 2007 and time for spring cleaning, out with the old difficult dinosaurs - who are neither happy nor here at the beginning of the week, and on with 5 of the hottest new bands out of the United kingdom - rare is it for New Yorkers to see the evolution of UK bands as it happens, Biffy Clyro debuts at #2 in the UK this week and ITC had already snagged them to play for us...
the exact opposite of extinction, more like an evolution!
Further information regarding The Happy Mondays visa issue:
It seems that post-9/11 visa application restrictions for a band with the Happy Mondays history- know as much for their legendary lifestyle as their unique collision of rave beats, indie rock and street poetry has proven difficult this time.
Essentially the US Embassy in the UK has halted the process of Bez’s visa application until the outcome of pending court proceedings. Unfortunately Bez was unable to come and shake his maracas at the bands first US performance in more than a decade at Coachella this spring. These proceedings should have concluded weeks ago but due to rescheduling, it made it impossible for a US visa to be issued in time for this weeks planned appearance.Although the rest of the band were able to enter the country and perform at Coachella, it transpired that other band members - including Shaun Ryder - had been issued with single entry only visas, due to their prosecution histories. Although the duration of the term of their visas would have allowed another visit to the US, the single entry status meant that the whole visa application process had to be restarted upon their return from LA, placing their plans to appear in NYC in jeopardy. The Happy Mondays are absolutely “gutted” at not being able to support Tony Wilson this week. However, they are sorting their visas issues once and for all—so the whole band— can return to the states sometime soon.
