Wooden Shjips at ATP NY 2010 (more by BBG)
Warning! The following Wooden Shjips video is not for the faint of heart, nor is it for those who don't enjoy the spacey, psychedelics of Black Dice who is responsible for the visuals in this far-out mescaline-induced trip. "Lazy Bones" is a slice of retro-grade 70s hard rock, the focus of the band's recent LP West whose repress is currently up for preorder via Thrill Jockey. Head to the Thrill Jockey site for more snippets from West and head below for the fractals and noise of the "Lazy Bones" video, which makes its debut here.
Wooden Shjips will spend their New Year's Eve in Austin (at the new Emo's East) with The Black Angels who play THREE NYC shows at Music Hall of Williamsburg in late October (Hallloween included). Tickets for all three dates (10/29, 10/30, 10/31) are still available.

"Davila 666 is a group of six badass Puerto Rican rockers who clearly enjoy the hell out of what they do. And when the band tapped the keg for their relentless garage pop party at Trailer Space on the closing Saturday of SXSW, the crowd was as infected by the members' swagger-and-shake energy as by the intensity of their hook-filled rock-n-roll. All driving melody and shout-along choruses, these songs get inside you and make you wanna get down and have a great time-which is exactly what their set was. And, once again, music crushes language barriers-I don't know what these dudes are sayin', but I sure like the sound of it." [Los Grillos Collective]Since leaving SXSW, Davila 666 have been busy playing shows as part of a big tour that brings them to NYC for shows at Cake Shop on April 20th and Knitting Factory on April 23rd. The Brooklyn show is with The Beets, and Xray Eyeballs.
And now Davila 666 have a new video for the song "Esa Nena Nunca Regresso". The clip, directed by Puro Vicio and funded by Scion AV, is making its first appearance in this post and comes from the band's new LP Tan Bajo which is out NOW via In The Red. Check it out below...

DOWNLOAD: D. Charles Speer & The Helix - "Freddie's Lapels" (MP3)
Note: The below picture of D. Charles Speer's is not anatomically accurate.
D. Charles Speer kicked off a solo tour last night (March 22) at Bruar Falls that continues tonight in Philadelphia with a show at Kung Fu Necktie. The solo dates (below) are in celebration of Speer's new "traditional Greek" solo record Arghiledes out now on Thrill Jockey.
"'Arghiledes' is a brilliant homage to Greek Rebetiko music of the early 20th century by No Neck Blues Band's David Shuford aka D. Charles Speer. It's his 2nd solo LP under this moniker and a deeply researched, beautifully executed effort replete with in depth sleeve notes and paste-on cover. Coming from a Blues playing American of Greek descent, the project reflects the syncretic nature of Rebetiko music, itself made up of the many disparate elements which formed Greek urban folk music (European music, Greek Orthodox ecclestiastical chant, Byzantine music and the modal traditions of Ottoman art music and café music) of this era." [SKVOT Pop]Watch/listen to Speer playing "Markos's Cave" from the solo album below.
After playing those East Coast dates through the beginning of April, Speer will link back up with his band The Helix to prep for a pair of NYC shows: 4/16 supporting Come at The Bell House (tickets), and 4/21 with Endless Boogie at Glasslands (tickets).
Just four days before the Bell House show, D. Charles Speer & The Helix will welcome their new LP Leaving the Commonwealth via Thrill Jockey. You can download the lead track "Freddie's Lapels" above and check out a live video of the band performing "Razorbacked" below with all tour dates...

Village Voice: What is "Crystal" about?Poppy, garagey, punky, and even dancey, Brooklyn band Xray Eyeballs have released the previously (and hotly) discussed "Crystal" video from their upcoming LP Not Nothing, due April 19 On Kanine Records. The preview pictures weren't really that NSFW but the video definitely is (not to mention a bit bloody and violent too). Like Frankie Rose before them, the Brooklyn ladies of Golden Triangle/Xray Eyeballs (Alix Brown and Carly Rabalais) show a surprising amount of skin. Check the video, which also stars members of The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Girls at Dawn, for the first time below.
Xray Eyeballs frontman O.J. San Felipe: "Crystal" started off as a song about these girls I knew who did too much crystal meth, but somehow it evolved into kind of a break-up song, unexpectedly. So now it's a crystal meth breakup song!
Village Voice: What inspired it musically?
Xray Eyeballs frontman O.J. San Felipe: I was inspired by New York City in the late-night hours. Just ending up at random places with random people and situations and exposure to danger and shady things . . . I like going out dancing, and I wanted to make a song that DJs can throw on and make people dance at the immediate drop of the needle, or right when the bassline kicks in . . . kinda like when the Cure's "Just Like Heaven" comes on at a party and people freak out. Not to say we sound like the Cure or anything, but the way people lose it when that first bouncy drumbeat and bassline comes on, that's a hard thing to capture.
Xray Eyeballs play DC tonight (3/7) as part of a tour through SXSW that ends on 3/26 in Ohio. All tour dates and the new album tracklisting are below...

Lumerians, who recently opened a couple of shows for Killing Joke, are supporting the Butthole Surfers at both upcoming Brooklyn shows (12/30 and 12/31). Lumerians' debut full-length, Transmalinnia, is due 3/1/11 via Knitting Factory Records. The album-full of tripped-out psych-garage rock is the follow-up to the band's self-titled/self-released EP from 2007. Check out the new video for the first track, "Black Tusk", available for the first time, below...
