Atlas Sound is in NYC, last night & tonight
Atlas Sound (by Tim Schaar for localcut)
Bradford Cox’s mostly-acclaimed new band Atlas Sound played their almost-first NYC show at Mercury Lounge last night (Feb 23, 2008). I say “almost-first” because I know Bradford played at least one solo show as Atlas Sound at a Fader party during CMJ in 2007.
BV contributor Nick Masi was there last night, and said Atlas Sound took the stage around midnight. Bradford began the show by apologizing – he said the transmission blew on their van, they were cranky, having a bad day, and that they might not sound that good. He also said sorry for not wearing a dress or being covered in blood, and separately pointed out how happy he was with the newly-purchased, orange Uniqlo cardigan he was wearing.
Despite all the negatives, Bradford did actually seem in good spirits and the band proceeded to play a set of atmospheric songs which were mostly off the new album Let the Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel. Nick also thinks there was at least one cover and/or internet-only song in the encore. Someone in the crowd requested the Jay Reatard cover he posted on his blog, but he couldn’t remember how to play it. For that he started apologizing again until others in the crowd told him it was okay. Someone else yelled out “genius” at one point, and that basically sums up how Nick felt as he was walking home from the show (two 7″‘s and a new t-shirt in hand). He said not to miss tonight’s show at Music Hall of Williamsburg, especially if you have the ability to Tivo the Oscars.
