Leon Bridges may have won SXSW this year, at least according to a panel of judges:

Fort Worth soul singer Leon Bridges, Australian indie sensation Courtney Barnett and veteran Austin rock band Spoon are the winners of this year's Grulke Prizes, South by Southwest announced Tuesday.

Bridges, who skyrocketed from relative obscurity late last year when two songs posted to SoundCloud helped get him a deal with Atlantic Records, was the winner for Developing U.S. Act. He drew a beyond-capacity crowd for his SXSW showcase at St. David's Historic Sanctuary and also played shows at Hype Hotel, Spotify House and other venues. His debut album is expected to be released later this year.

Congrats Leon, Courtney and Spoon.

We already posted one set of pictures from Thursday at Hype Hotel 2015 presented by Feed the Beat, and a set of fellow SXSW winner Spoon from Tuesday. Here are three more artists we're fans of who played Thursday, in part as part of the Gorilla Vs Bear showcase at the Mazda-sponsored venue. More below...

If the old Spoon were at times as stiff as a starched shirt, what stood out about Tuesday's show was the spontaneity and flexibility pulsating through the band. Opening with a strutting, almost funk-informed read on "Rent I Pay," the hometown rockers barreled their way through a set long on loose grooves and limber instrumentalism. The opening bars of "Don't You Evah" were tantalizingly stretched out, its bassline strutting through ice-like sheets of guitar. It recalled the coiled anxiety of Elvis Costello's "Watching the Detectives," Britt Daniel playfully teasing out the vocal melody. "Don't Make Me a Target" stalked and creeped, building to a rapturous finale and "I Turn My Camera On" simmered and popped.

In the past, it felt like the band members were simply playing alongside each other, but at Hype Hotel they seemed to be reading each other's cues, Alex Fischel adding flowing, harplike keyboard filigrees to the end of each phrase in "Inside Out." [Diffuser]

The Tuesday headliners at Hype Hotel presented by Feed The Beat on Tuesday of SXSW this year (the Syndicate's Conflict of Interest party) was Austin's own Spoon. Pictures from their set continue below...

East Cameron Folkcore

Austin's East Cameron Folkcore make rollicking orchestral folk rock, and they've got a bit of punk edge too, which is fitting since Gorilla Biscuits drummer Luke Abbey recently joined as a member. Earlier this week, they put out their new album, Kingdom of Fear, on Nine Mile Records, and they're currently in the process of making a video trilogy for its tracks "Kingdom of Fear," "The Joke" and "969." We've got the premiere of part 2 ("The Joke"), which you can watch below.

The band wrapped up a four-night stand at Austin's Salvage Vanguard Theater last week to celebrate the release of the LP, and they have two more hometown shows coming up. They play the 65th annual Art City Austin happening this month (4/25-26), and then they have a club show at Holy Mountain on May 16.

New video below...

Cloud Nothings @ Bar 96 - SXSW - 3/20/2015
Cloud Nothings @ Bar 96 - SXSW - 3/20/2015

After Palma Violets' set at the Friday night Dr. Martens and Culture Collide show at Bar 96 during SXSW, Cloud Nothings headlined and pictures of their set are in this post.

The band was as great as ever, giving us pretty much every song you'd want to hear from their last two albums. They transitioned the instrumental "Separation" into the jammed out "Pattern Walks." They gave us standout single "I'm Not Part of Me" towards the end of the set, and did their sludged-up version of "No Future/No Past" into an extended "Wasted Days" to end the show.
