Little Dragon & Octopus Project @ ACL Live 8/31/2014

The last time we caught Swedes Little Dragon, they were playing one of our intimate SXSW day parties. Needless to say this was a much bigger show, in support of the group's lovely fourth album, Nabuma Rubberband. Locals The Octopus Project kept things just a little west of weird. Pictures from the whole show are in this post and more follow below...

J Roddy Walston and The Business - ACL Live - 9/2/2014

Now in its 40th season, Austin City Limits continues to bring some of music's most engaging live performers to the small screen (even though screens are getting bigger). On Tuesday night (9/2), Richmond, Virginia's J Roddy Walston and The Business, who are still going strong off 2013's Essential Tremors, hit ACL live for a taping. While their set streamed live on ACL's YouTube channel, folks will have to wait till their episode airs later this year on PBS to see it again. We do have pictures from their set which are in this post. More below...

Mineral

Austin emo legends Mineral are reunited this year, but so far the only hometown date they've had announced is Fun Fun Fun Fest. That may change tonight (8/29) though. There's a SXSW Cares (the benefit fund for victims of this year's tragedy at SXSW) benefit happening at Mohawk indoors with Jess Williamson and a headlining band called "The Parking Lot". Mineral posted this to their Facebook about the show:

Pretty excited to see this band play in Austin tonight. There's not much info on them if you google them, but we think you'll like 'em. Their name has a snappy ring to it. Not to mention it looks like they have a great taste in fonts. You should join us. #FirstComeFirstServe #SXSWCARES

Sylvan Esso & Dana Buoy @ Emo's - 8/17/2014
Sylvan Esso & Dana Buoy @ Emo's - 8/17/2014

One of the more delightful aspects of Sylvan Esso's songs is that they aren't just fun to dance to but also to sing, as the lyrics, although often a touch cryptic, are interesting and well constructed. "Coffee," the band's standout single came fourth in the setlist, and had concertgoers more engrossed than at any other point in the night. However, a good portion of the songs proved to be enthusiastic sing-alongs. With a small catalogue of songs from this young band, fans know what they're going to get at this point. What they're getting is great, and Sylvan Esso find themselves at a pivotal point where a solid sophomore effort could propel them to great heights as an dance-centric yet intelligent group. [Pop Press International]
The infectious synth-pop duo that is Sylvan Esso hit Austin last Sunday (8/17) to play a seriously impressive show at Emo's with similarly synthesizer-fixated artist Dana Buoy (of Akron/Family). The double-bill managed to exceed even the organizer's expectations, selling out Emo's after being moved from the much smaller Parish. Sylvan Esso's leading lady Amelia Meath brought her trademark swagger (and dance moves) to the show, hypnotizing the crowd into a swaying mass of amateur back-up vocalists. Traditionally solo, Buoy traded some of his sequencers and loop pedals in for a full band leading to some more rough-around-the-edges versions of his tracks. Check out photos from both sets at BrooklynVegan.
