John Baizley @ North Door SXSW 2013 (more by Greg Cristman)
Baroness

"The last night at SXSW, while everyone else was seeing Prince and Justin Timberlake, I went to the Invisible Oranges showcase, which was loaded with very loud acts -- KEN Mode, Full Of Hell, Pallbearer -- and one pretty quiet one: John Baizley of Baroness, playing (mostly) solo, doing some Townes Van Zandt covers, some Baroness songs stripped down, and talking about his recovery from the injuries he sustained when his band's tour bus crashed, injuring nine members of its crew. It was a life-affirming set, in which Baizley discussed (among other things) how his injuries have forced him to relearn how to play guitar. We often assume, I think, that when a musician survives an accident, he can simply continue making music, but the human body is a complicated machine, and the human brain even more so, and healing both, together, is hard enough even when that healing doesn't involve trying to reteach one's muscles, reflexes, and digits the demanding specifics of how to play an instrument at a professional level. So it shouldn't come as a huge surprise to hear that drummer Matt Maggioni and bassist Allen Blickle have parted ways with Baroness due to the injuries they suffered last summer, but it's still kind of heartbreaking."

And Baroness soldiers on... As discussed, Baroness will return to Austin for Chaos in Tejas this year, but it was more recently revealed that the Chaos show is part of a much larger North American tour that includes Lollapalooza and three Texas shows:
May 31 in Dallas - Trees w/ True Widow

June 1 Austin - Chaos in Tejas (Mohawk) w/ Rotten Sound, True Widow, Coliseum, Kill the Client

June 2 Houston - Free Press Summer Festival

Tickets for the Mohawk show are still on sale. Dallas goes on sale April 5th. All tour dates can be found at IO.

Free Press Summer Festival runs June 1st & 2nd in Houston and also features The Postal Service, Iggy Pop and The Stooges, BASSNECTAR, Alabama Shakes, Passion Pit, TV on the Radio, Gogol Bordello, Cat Power, Of Monsters and Men, Social Distortion, Arctic Monkeys, Mavis Staples, The Geto Boys, and more on the bill.

P.S. Coliseum, who play a lot of upcoming dates with Baroness just dropped a new track. Check it out below...

Pallbearer

After a week of SXSW shows, the first annual Invisible Oranges SXSW showcase (in partnership with BrooklynVegan) at The North Door on Saturday night, March 16th was a good comedown, mixing the brutal with introspective in an inviting venue. Featuring a headlining set from melodic doom favorites Pallbearer (who also played our day party earlier that week at old Emo's), a mesmerizing performance from John Baizley (of Baroness) with surprise guests Bruce Lamont and Mel from Royal Thunder, punk-y black metal from Mutilation Rites, nihilism and powerviolence from Full of Hell, metallic noise-core from KEN Mode (who filled in for an ailing Pinkish Black), and grunting hardcore beatdowns from Homewrecker, it was a great night of heavy music. Invisible Oranges/BrooklynVegan would like to send a personal thank you to all of the bands and fans who attended/streamed the show live. Iif you missed it, look for video from the show to surface very soon!

Until next year!

More photos from the show are below.....

Intronaut at Rosleand, Feb 2012 (more by Fred Pessaro // BBG)
Intronaut

BrooklynVegan has the scoop that technical brutalizers Intronaut will share the stage with Scale the Summit on a set of dates promoting the new LP Habitual Levitations. Kicking off in the Northwest, most of the shows will mean a date with post-metallers Mouth of the Architect or Castle, with MotA joining on to destroy Red 7 on June 29th. Ticketing info is on the way.

The Pitchfork Show No Mercy showcase on March 13th was one of several Vans shows at Mohawk that week, encompassing two stages of heavy music that ran the gamut from crusty hardcore to thrash to 70s-style hard rock to Pinkish Black's unclassifiable oddness (a compliment, if there ever was one). Featuring a headlining set from Skeletonwitch on the large large outdoor stage and local heroes Power Trip on the indoor, the show also had appearances from Trash Talk, Royal Thunder, Wetlungs, Pallbearer, Encrust, Mutilation Rites, Vattnet Viskar, Inter Arma, Batillus and more. A full set of pictures and full sets of video from both stages are below.

As discussed on BrooklynVegan, 2013 will be our second year of Pedestrian Bridge shows (Narrows played last year)... but this time on BV and Chaos in Tejas will welcome Destruction Unit, Merchandise and Parquet Courts! This FREE, all-ages show kicks off at 2AM tonight, March 14th (technically 3/15 in the AM) on the Pedestrian Bridge (Lamar & Riverside).

The Bridge show is one of eight shows for BrooklynVegan and Invisible Oranges. (Can someone get us an espresso?) Chaos in Tejas is staying busy too.

Hexvessel

Hexvessel have a bunch of dates in the EU in the next six months, including interesting stops at Roadburn 2013 and Heavy Days in Doomtown. But the Finnish psychedelic folk band has one other interesting show planned as well, a single SXSW date at The Hideout on March 14, their only US show this far. Check them out if you can.

The dark psychedelic folk band dropped their latest LP No Holier Temple late last year and you can get a taste of their live show below in a video which features the LP openers "Heaven & Earth Magic" and "Woods To Conjure" below.

Check out that video and all tour dates, much of which are with the mighty Sabbath Assembly, below.
