As the police are still searching for clues, Esme Barrera was laid to rest in her hometown of El Paso Tuesday, and this week there will be several benefit shows (both in Austin and in Brooklyn) to celebrate Esme's life, and support the causes she participated in, and to help support her family and help with the memorial expenses.
Tonight, Thursday, 1/12, starting at 7pm, the Scoot Inn will be hosting a show. Friday, starting at 5pm, Club 1808 will open its doors for another benefit show, and then Sunday starting at 3pm Frontier Bar, GSMG, and 3 Rules will be having another benefit. More details on these three Austin shows are below.
Also on Sunday a memorial service for Esme for friends and colleagues will be held in Austin at 2pm at Fiesta Gardens. Later this month, Ted Leo will be coming in for another benefit on January 28th at Beerland.
Esme's prescence was also felt and missed throughout the music clubs of Austin last week aka Free Week. Austin360 says:
Throughout the week, the loss of Esme Barrera was felt as clubs collected donations for her family. Some musicians also mentioned Barrera from the stage, including A Giant Dog, who dedicated John Wesley Coleman's "Can't Stop Dreaming" to Barrera, and Quin Galavis, who encouraged people to attend one of the benefits being held in Barrera's honor in the coming weeks.Full details of the this week's benefit shows, and a John Wesley Coleman video that Esme starred in, below...
"It's been hard, but people are coming together and doing some great things," Galavis said of the benefits.

T-Bird & the Breaks @ Fun Fun Fun Fest (more by Tim Griffin)
"Live music pioneer Graham Williams (founder of Fun Fun Fun Fest) started Free Week in 2003 when he was still booking shows for Emo's. According to Williams, who now operates Transmission Events, Free Week started "as a way to get people to come out during the slow time of the year when nobody was touring, as well as just bring something fun to do when everyone was still off work and the kids out of school for the end of the holidays."" [Culture Map]Free Week continues in Austin through 1/8. Have you seen any good free shows yet?
Previously listed as "special guest" due to their New Year's Eve show at Stubb's, it has been revealed that T-Bird & the Breaks headline the free Mohawk Outdoor show on Saturday (1/7). OBN IIIs, who just played Emo's, headline the inside room that same night and play Beerland one night earlier.
Looking for free beer too? Frock on Vintage has you covered. Head down there by 6pm each night for early sets of music and complimentary Corona.

"Seeing Killdozer at Emo's, thinking the last 20 years didn't happen. It was all a dream and I still have hair." - King Coffey
It's New Year's Eve! Great shows tonight include Russian Circles at Red 7, The Black Angels at Emo's East, Willie Nelson at ACL Live, and Big Freedia/Turquoise Jeep at Mohawk (that's TJ pictured above). Grupo Fantasma is playing Club De Ville instead of Beauty Ballroom, and sadly nobody is playing Emo's Inside because last night Killdozer closed down that club forever. Check out a Statesman article on the topic that includes interviews with the club's former staff. Stay tuned for our pictures from the final nights, and R.I.P. Emo's.
Speaking of last night, it's when BrooklynVegan posted their collective list of favorite albums from 2011. Check that out.
Party hard tonight, but then rest up for Free Week.
