Austra @ The Moody Theater on 2/11/2013

"I think I kind of started making electronic music by accident. It was mostly because I was coming out of the classical world and opera world and I was really interested in writing soundtracks like for movies. I was writing soundtracks for my friends who were dancers and performance artists and my way of doing that was tinkering with orchestral samples on my computer. So that's actually how I got involved in electronic music, I was using fake violins, and fake cellos, and fake oboes, and then eventually I just got really partial to the synthetic sounds and instead of replacing them with the real instruments, which a lot of people suspected I would do, I kind of just delved deeper into the electronic world and slowly but surely discovered dance music. It took me a long time though."- Austra's Katie Stelmanis to AustinistHopefully you managed to dance a bit to the sounds of Austra at Moody Theater on 2/11 or 2/12, one of the two nights Austra opened for the xx at the Austin venue. We told you we heard Flaming Lips were playing at least one more big SXSW show, but it's even greater than we imagined. SXSW reports:
We are excited to announce that the one and only Flaming Lips will mark their return to SXSW by playing the Town Lake Stage at Auditorium Shores on Friday, March 15. The band has delivered some of the most notable performances in SXSW history, including 1997's Parking Lot Experiment and 2006's secret shows. The Flaming Lips 13th studio album entitled The Terror, will be released on April 2nd through Warner Bros. Records. The album was produced by the band's long-time collaborator Dave Fridmann and The Flaming Lips at Tarbox Road Studios. It's comprised of nine original compositions that reflect a darker-hued spectrum than previous works. The Flaming Lips, who star in a commercial that premiered during the Superbowl, also play the Belmont as part of Warner's week of shows at the venue. Also on the bill are Jim James and Divine Fits. Jim is the lead singer and guitarist of Louisville's My Morning Jacket, and recently released his first solo record Regions of Light and Sound of God on ATO Records. Divine Fits released their debut record A Thing Called Divine Fits on Merge Records last year and will be playing the Coachella, Sasquatch and Governors Ball festivals in the coming months.
Shows at Auditorium Shores are FREE and open to the public. Gates open at 3:30 pm. See you there!

Single Mothers in Chicago in January (more by James Richards IV)

London, Ontario punks Single Mothers released their four-song self titled EP back in 2011 and it's one of those EPs that's just way too short, kills for the entire time, and leaves you begging for a full length album. Well fortunately, we'll be getting that album this year. The band have signed with XL imprint Hot Charity (Willis Earl Beal, Ratking) and the label will release their debut full length at some point in the near future. The album is being produced by Joby J. Ford of The Bronx, whose mix of post-hardcore and rock n' roll isn't too far removed from that of Single Mothers, and it wouldn't be surprising if they've picked up a few tips from The Bronx along the way.
The band are great live too, thrashing around ruthlessly as frontman Andrew Thomson spits wordy, personal lyrics at the crowd. They'll be taking that show on the road again this February and March, and will be coming through Austin for SXSW. The shows they have lined up so far include March 13 at Metal and Lace Lounge, a TBA show on 3/14, the CMW showcase on March 15 at Friends, and the Alternative Press showcase on March 16 at Red 7.
Before that, they'll be at pre-SXSW festival Savannah Stopover in Georgia, and afterwards they'll be at post-SXSW festival Spillover 2013 in Dallas with Parenthetical Girls, Parquet Courts, Today is the Day, Alex Bleeker and the Freaks, Widowspeak, Ducktails, and more. Tickets for Spillover are on sale now. The full lineup is below.
Single Mothers have other upcoming dates also, and all of them are listed below, along with a stream of their EP...

In a time when the sounds of the late '60s are highly influential on modern day indie rock, it's great to see many of those classic bands coming back for tours to give their fans who were too young or not even born yet a chance to see them. The Zombies are one of those bands, and I got the chance to see them in NYC back in 2011, which was great, but a part of me always wished they'd actually tour with one of the newer bands they influenced. Well, that's finally happening, because it was just announced that Elephant Stone will be heading out as a support act with The Zombies for a few dates this March. The US dates that the two bands are playing together are all in Texas, and they include the Austin Psych Fest SXSW showcase on March 16 at Brazos Hall. The other two TX dates happen on March 13 at Kessler Theatre in Dallas and March 17 at Fitzgerald's in Houston.
While The Zombies are in Austin, they'll be playing other SXSW shows, including one of the just-mentioned Waterloo Records free day parties. They play the one on March 16 with Ra Ra Riot, Indians, Mikal Cronin, Dawes, Fidlar, and Civil Twilight. Zombies go on at noon.
These shows all happen before Elephant Stone heads out on tour with The Black Angels and Allah-Lahs (Elephant Stone frontman Rishi Dhir has played sitar in Black Angels) and that tour brings all three bands to Austin at the end of April for Austin Psych Fest. Elephant Stone also have dates in Dallas (2/24) and Denton (2/24) before Psych Fest.
A list of all dates, a stream of Elephant Stone's new album, and a classic Zombies track stream below...
