Arctic Monkeys @ Cedar Park Center - 10/28/2014
Arctic Monkeys & Mini Mansions @ Cedar Park Center - 10/28/2015

Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner caught the crowd at the Cedar Park Center Tuesday unaware, slinking onstage during opening act Mini Mansions and hijacking vocals from drummer (and Queens of the Stone Age bassist) Michael Shuman. Turner hinted at the 90-minute spectacle to come with a brief but seductive verse that left screaming girls in his wake.

"Thanks to Arctic Monkeys," Shuman said with good cheer. "Thanks to our fourth member."

A quarter after 9pm, the crowd surged forward, greeting the entire English quartet this time. Outstretched hands furiously photographed their every move as the rockers burst into the opening track of their fifth LP, last year's AM. His face obscured by smoke and shadows, Turner put his expression in the subtle swing of his hips. [Austin Chronicle]

Arctic Monkeys brought their current tour to Texas for a few shows, including Austin's Cedar Park Center on Tuesday (10/28) with Mini Mansions, a related band of their pals QOTSA. AM's 20-song set included most of their newest album and plenty of older favorites too.

Before they leave TX, they've got one more show in Woodlands tonight (10/30). More pictures from the Austin show, and their setlist, below...

ACL Festival - Week 2 - Day 1 - 10/11/2013

The Austin City Limits Festival 2013 opened its second weekend as the sold-out festival it has been for more than a decade, encouraging hopes that the dual-weekend approach to the event would stick past this year. It did dash some expectations that a repeat of its opening round last weekend would draw smaller crowds, at least over the course of the entire three days.

But the sea of humanity was noticeably thinner on Day One in the early hours -- more like the festival days of old, when it was just the working locals who came to ACL; from 11 am to around 4 pm Friday, the atmosphere was low-key, aired-out and open, with plenty of space for blankets and no throngs stepping on your toes every four seconds. - [CultureMap]

While Sunday's finale (10/13) was a literal wash, the second weekend of the ACL Music Festival got off to a muggy start on Friday (10/11) with -- like the previous Friday -- sets from Arctic Monkeys, Vampire Weekend, QOTSA, Okkervil River, Pinback, Jake Bugg, Depeche Mode, Local Natives, Muse and more. Pictures from day 1 are in this post.

You can check out another set of W2D1 pics over at BrooklynVegan, and coverage of the drier first weekend of ACL is here. More pics from Weekend 2, Day 1 below...

Arctic Monkeys / Passion Pit @ FPSF - 6/1/2013
Free Press Summer Festival - Day 1 - 6/1/2013
Free Press Summer Festival - Day 1 - 6/1/2013

The official closing band on Saturday at FPSF was the Postal Service, but for those of us who know how much even mellow indie-rock like the fare played by Ben Gibbard et al. owes to Detroit madman Iggy Pop, he and his Stooges were the climax of the day's events.

A crowd gathered around the Neptune Stage to pay tribute to the grandfather of punk and as soon as he stepped onto the stage, we went through a time machine. Though he looked his generation, his voice told a different story, screeching out just as powerfully and dangerously as it had 40 years earlier. [Houston Press]

Houston's Free Press Summer Festival kicked off yesterday (6/1) with sets from The Postal Service, Arctic Monkeys, Passion Pit, Iggy & The Stooges, Alabama Shakes, A Place to Bury Strangers and more. Pictures of those (and other) bands are in this post.

Arctic Monkeys have been playing a new song, "Do I Wanna Know?," at their recent shows, and if you haven't checked that out yet, you can watch a video of them debuting it in California last month, along with more FPSF pictures, below...

The Black Keys came to Frank Erwin with the Arctic Monkeys last night, 4/25, (while Bon Iver was taping over at ACL). How was the show?

The headliners, who recently invited John Fogerty to play with them at Coachella, played a 20-song set, finishing off the night with the help of a giant disco ball during the encore. Check out the full Black Keys setlist, more Instagram pictures, a picture of the Arctic Monkeys' setlist, and a video (not from the show) below...
