Black Angels @ ACL Fest 10/11/2013
The Austin City Limits Festival 2013 opened its second weekend as the sold-out festival it has been for more than a decade, encouraging hopes that the dual-weekend approach to the event would stick past this year. It did dash some expectations that a repeat of its opening round last weekend would draw smaller crowds, at least over the course of the entire three days. While Sunday's finale (10/13) was a literal wash, the second weekend of the ACL Music Festival got off to a muggy start on Friday (10/11) with -- like the previous Friday -- sets from Arctic Monkeys, Vampire Weekend, QOTSA, Okkervil River, Pinback, Jake Bugg, Depeche Mode, Local Natives, Muse and more. Pictures from day 1 are in this post.
But the sea of humanity was noticeably thinner on Day One in the early hours -- more like the festival days of old, when it was just the working locals who came to ACL; from 11 am to around 4 pm Friday, the atmosphere was low-key, aired-out and open, with plenty of space for blankets and no throngs stepping on your toes every four seconds. - [CultureMap]

Arctic Monkeys / Passion Pit @ FPSF - 6/1/2013
The official closing band on Saturday at FPSF was the Postal Service, but for those of us who know how much even mellow indie-rock like the fare played by Ben Gibbard et al. owes to Detroit madman Iggy Pop, he and his Stooges were the climax of the day's events.Houston's Free Press Summer Festival kicked off yesterday (6/1) with sets from The Postal Service, Arctic Monkeys, Passion Pit, Iggy & The Stooges, Alabama Shakes, A Place to Bury Strangers and more. Pictures of those (and other) bands are in this post.
A crowd gathered around the Neptune Stage to pay tribute to the grandfather of punk and as soon as he stepped onto the stage, we went through a time machine. Though he looked his generation, his voice told a different story, screeching out just as powerfully and dangerously as it had 40 years earlier. [Houston Press]
Arctic Monkeys have been playing a new song, "Do I Wanna Know?," at their recent shows, and if you haven't checked that out yet, you can watch a video of them debuting it in California last month, along with more FPSF pictures, below...
