The Black Keys - ACLTV Taping - 11/17/2014

Blues rock duo The Black Keys, who played ACL TV's 36th season, returned on Monday (11/17) for a taping of the 40th season's final episode. They did a good job splitting the set pretty evenly between their last three albums -- 2010's Brothers, 2011's El Camino and this year's Turn Blue -- and threw in some older cuts as well. More pictures of their set, and the full setlist, below...

J Roddy Walston and The Business - ACL Live - 9/2/2014

Now in its 40th season, Austin City Limits continues to bring some of music's most engaging live performers to the small screen (even though screens are getting bigger). On Tuesday night (9/2), Richmond, Virginia's J Roddy Walston and The Business, who are still going strong off 2013's Essential Tremors, hit ACL live for a taping. While their set streamed live on ACL's YouTube channel, folks will have to wait till their episode airs later this year on PBS to see it again. We do have pictures from their set which are in this post. More below...

Tweedy - ACLTV - 6/20/2014
Tweedy - ACLTV - 6/20/2014

...Father and son (Tweedy and pop?) had just finished playing a full album's worth of new material at ACL Live along with guitarist Jim Elkington, multi-instrumentalist Liam Cunningham, bassist Darin Gray, and backing vocalists Holly Laessig and Jess Wolfe of the band Lucius. It's not common for a show to begin with 14 songs no one has yet heard: "That's always fun at a concert," Tweedy acknowledged apologetically as he thanked the audience for the indulgence.

The pleasure, as it turned out, was all ours. Though Tweedy followed the new stuff with nine Wilco and Uncle Tupelo favorites played solo plus a couple of full-band ringers for an encore, it was the sneak preview of "Sukierae," the upcoming debut from the band just called Tweedy, that made the night special. [Austin 360]

The setlist from that show along with pictures from the taping (which happened back on June 20th) are in this post. Stay tuned for the episode to air on TV.

David Yow (L) in his Scratch Acid days
Scratch Acid

I learned about being a frontman while coming up punk rock in central Texas, going to see local bands like the Butthole Surfers, the Big Boys and the Dicks. They were all really fun to watch; it was kind of a spectacle. I remember the night that Gary Floyd, the singer of the Dicks, was dressed as a nurse, and he'd stuffed a bunch of liver in his underwear. He kept pulling it out and smearing it all over his enormous belly. It was hideously beautiful; he was a huge Divine fan and was inspired by all that weird, flamboyant John Waters shit like Female Trouble. - [Magnet]
David Yow, onetime of seminal Texas punk band Scratch Acid (and sometimes still Jesus Lizard) will fill in for The Dicks' singer Gary Floyd, who is undergoing multiple knee surgeries, at the Austin Corn Lovers' Fiesta at Infest on October 5. (Not to be confused with the other ACL happening that same weekend.) It's being billed as "David Yow & The Dicks" and features original members Dicks Buxf Parrott and Pat Deason, along with more recent players Mark Kenyon and Hickoids' Davy Jones. No word on tickets as of yet.

This is not the first time Yow has sung with The Dicks -- he joined them onstage at the 2009 Austin Music Awards. Meanwhile, Yow recently guested with another band -- Girls Against Boys -- at NYC's Bowery Ballroom.

The schedule is out!

To quote them:

The Austin City Limits Music Festival's two-weekend bash will be jam-packed with superstars this October -- and now fans can plan their revelry down to the minute. The official schedule was announced this morning and features MUSE, Depeche Mode, and Queens Of The Stone Age on Friday, October 4 and 11. Kings of Leon, The Cure, Wilco, and Passion Pit will take the stage on Saturday, October 5 and October 12. Each weekend will wrap up with music from Lionel Richie, Atoms for Peace, and Phoenix on Sunday, October 6 and 13.
What big conflicts do you see?

Meanwhile C3 will be keeping busy with their Chicago festival Lollapalooza (check out the recently released map).

Phoenix

Phoenix stopped at the Fox Theater in Pomona on Thursday night to warm up for their headlining performance at Coachella tonight (you can stream it live). Some pictures from that smaller California show are in this post.

After Coachella this weekend, Phoenix will play... the second week of Coachella, and then eventually make their way to Texas before the end of April for a co-headlining show at Edgefest in Dallas. Who else is playing Edgefest? Well... Bush, Paramore, Deftones, and a whole bunch of other bands you probably won't want to pay to be trapped for a whole day with.

The good news is that Phoenix will visit Austin on May 6th. The somewhat bad news is it is only to tape an episode of Austin City Limts (which means tickets aren't exactly easy to come by). Hopefully Phoenix, who also recently played an intimate show in Brooklyn and will be at Lollapalooza, announce another Austin date soon. Meanwhile, check out more of those pictures from Pomona below...

Ed Droste and Daniel Rossen of Grizzly Bear @ Stubb's - 4/8/2012
Grizzly Bear @ Stubb's - 4/8/2013

Grizzly Bear are on tour and in Texas this week and played a sold-out Stubb's with Owen Pallett on Monday night (4/8). Owen, who was shoe-less and sporting a Grizzly Bear shirt, got things going with his violin and sounded great backed by Matt Smith on guitar and Rob Gordon on drums.

Grizzly Bear took the stage to cheers from the audience, and rolled through 19 songs (including a three song encore) ending with a great acoustic version of "All We Ask" with the band gathered around a single mic. Check out the full setlist below.

GB played Houston last night and are back in Austin tonight (4/10) to tape an episode of Austin City Limits. They then hit El Paso on April 11 before moving on to California for shows including Coachella, and then the world (London, Barcelona, Paris, Milan, München) before heading back to New York where they play Governors Ball.

Check out more pictures from Stubb's, along with the setlist and upcoming tour dates (and maybe I'll see you at the taping tonight), below...

As we recently mentioned over on Brooklynvegan, Vampire Weekend have released the details of their upcoming new album, Modern Vampires Of The City. They head out on the road in April, and you can stream two of their new tracks now.

During their visit to Austin for SXSW, they stopped by The Moody Theater to help kick off Season 39 of Austin City Limits with VW's first-ever taping for the show.

Speaking of Austin City Limits, they have big things in store for Season 39 - rumored to include live streaming of performances. So far there are some great tapings to look forward to, including Grizzly Bear, Jim James (of My Morning Jacket), Lumineers and Phoenix.

Gary Clark Jr. @ The Moody Theater - 11/30/2012
Gary Clark Jr. @ The Moody Theater - 11/30/2012

KLRU's Austin City Limits is now finished filming Season 38 of the longest-runnning live music show. Before they wrapped up for the year, Gary Clark Jr., who landed on Rolling Stones' Best Albums of the Year list, came and did his Austin proud for the second-to-last taping. From ACLTV's site:

"I've been wanting to do this for like 16 years," the young guitar slinger commented before he began. "So let's have some fun!" There's an irony to that statement being followed by the downhearted "When My Train Pulls In," but the heavy blues riffs defied the lyrics' melancholy cast. The show kicked into high gear immediately afterward with the driving fingerpicked boogie of "Don't Owe You a Thang," and the hometown crowd settled into the palm of his hand. "@garyclarkjr is slaying @acltv right now mayne!!!," claimed tonythecuate on Twitter.
One of Gary's next shows will be opening for the Rolling Stones in Brooklyn. See more pictures from the ACL taping, and a shot of the setlist (though the band actually jumped around), below.
