Austin Psych fest Day 3 - 5/4/2014

At dusk, Mikal Cronin began his performance on the Reverberation stage. A few fans ran from either the swing tree, hammocks, or other shows to catch the hardworking Los Angelian. Smoke clouds appeared on stage and on the screen backdrop. Once the band got started, the members went all out and thrashed their long hair around. Cronin requested that the sound system "blast the drums and guitar." Blue lights cast upon the stage and audience as he performed "Apathy" off of 2011's self-titled album. Throughout the set there was crowd surfing, dancing, clapping plenty of hollering. At one point, Cronin brought one of his friends on stage and serenaded her "Happy Birthday." She threw cupcakes into the audience and shoved one in the guitarist's face. The fans loved it. - [mxdwn.com]
Austin Psych Fest 2014 came to a close on Sunday (5/4) with sets from The War on Drugs, Mikal Cronin, wild Japanese/UK quartet Bo Ningen, reunited Brits Loop, Animal Collective's electronic wizard Panda Bear, TV on the Radio offshoot Higgins Waterproof Black Magic Band, and more. Pictures from the final day of APF are in this post.

Pictures from Austin Psych Fest day 1 are here and day 2 are here. More from day 3 below...

Austin Psych fest Day 2 - 5/3/2014

Medicine closed out Saturday perfectly with their abrasive yet eclectically catchy guitar tones. When they abruptly announced that they had played their last song the crowd sprang to life, clapping and shouting loud enough that the powers at be had no choice but to let them do another song. Brad Laner launched into an extended tape gouging harmonic introduction to "Aruca," the single off their first album. The crowd danced along, hopping up and down and trying to recreate the reaction their heyday audiences had in their video for "The Pink." This experience sums up what Psych Fest gets right: an eager commemoration to a niche musical history and present that might otherwise be overlooked. - [Read The Horn]
Day 2 of Austin Psych Fest (5/3) was a good example of the wide variety of "psych" you get at APF, be it the pop Bolan-isms of Temples, reformed shoegazers Medicine's metallic white noise, Tuareg guitarist Bombino, Japanese rockers Mono, the groovy goth of The Horrors, or the pure muscle of Destruction Unit. We already published pictures of The Horrors set but we've got pics from the rest of those bands and lots more of Saturday's action in this post.

Pictures from day 1 are here. More from day 2 are below...

Austin Psych fest Day 1 - 5/2/2014

Boston's Quilt played early on Elevation, and not a ripple in the water came from their laid-back soft psych. They would be infuriating to see in a club on a Saturday night, but against the scenic backdrop of Carson Creek, they were appropriately pleasant. If one's learned anything from SXSW, going hard during the day can sometimes kill the momentum, and Quilt were a mid-afternoon reminder that there was a whole day - a whole weekend too! - ahead of them. - [Austin 360]
Austin Psych Fest returned to Carson Creek Ranch for the 2014 edition edition got off to a hazy start last Friday (5/2) with sets from Black Angels, Black Lips, Quilt, Zombies, Graveyard, Fresh & Onlys, Dandy Warhols and many more. Pictures from their sets, and more, are in this post.

Pics from Liars' headlining set are up over at BrooklynVegan. We'll have pics from Saturday and Sunday up soon. Meanwhile, more pics from APF day 1 below...

The Zombies

In a time when the sounds of the late '60s are highly influential on modern day indie rock, it's great to see many of those classic bands coming back for tours to give their fans who were too young or not even born yet a chance to see them. The Zombies are one of those bands, and I got the chance to see them in NYC back in 2011, which was great, but a part of me always wished they'd actually tour with one of the newer bands they influenced. Well, that's finally happening, because it was just announced that Elephant Stone will be heading out as a support act with The Zombies for a few dates this March. The US dates that the two bands are playing together are all in Texas, and they include the Austin Psych Fest SXSW showcase on March 16 at Brazos Hall. The other two TX dates happen on March 13 at Kessler Theatre in Dallas and March 17 at Fitzgerald's in Houston.

While The Zombies are in Austin, they'll be playing other SXSW shows, including one of the just-mentioned Waterloo Records free day parties. They play the one on March 16 with Ra Ra Riot, Indians, Mikal Cronin, Dawes, Fidlar, and Civil Twilight. Zombies go on at noon.

These shows all happen before Elephant Stone heads out on tour with The Black Angels and Allah-Lahs (Elephant Stone frontman Rishi Dhir has played sitar in Black Angels) and that tour brings all three bands to Austin at the end of April for Austin Psych Fest. Elephant Stone also have dates in Dallas (2/24) and Denton (2/24) before Psych Fest.

A list of all dates, a stream of Elephant Stone's new album, and a classic Zombies track stream below...
