Austin Psych Fest 2013

Austin Psych Fest is less than a month away (April 26 to 28), and the full line up is out (on the flyer above and listed below) as are the breakdowns by day. As we mentioned previously, this year it's being held at Carson Creek Ranch (about 20 minutes from downtown) and offers overnight camping -- which is a pretty big change from previous years.

This year's line-up is pretty amazing, featuring Deerhunter, Os Mutantes, Silver Apples, Sweden's GOAT, Billy Gibbons' pre-ZZ Top band Moving Sidewalks (who played NYC recently), Roky Erickson, Clinic, Black Mountain, Black Rebel Motorcyle Club, Black Angels, Tamaryn, Raveonettes, Warpaint... and tons more. Tickets and Weekend Passes are on sale now. See which artists are playing which day below...

The Zombies

In a time when the sounds of the late '60s are highly influential on modern day indie rock, it's great to see many of those classic bands coming back for tours to give their fans who were too young or not even born yet a chance to see them. The Zombies are one of those bands, and I got the chance to see them in NYC back in 2011, which was great, but a part of me always wished they'd actually tour with one of the newer bands they influenced. Well, that's finally happening, because it was just announced that Elephant Stone will be heading out as a support act with The Zombies for a few dates this March. The US dates that the two bands are playing together are all in Texas, and they include the Austin Psych Fest SXSW showcase on March 16 at Brazos Hall. The other two TX dates happen on March 13 at Kessler Theatre in Dallas and March 17 at Fitzgerald's in Houston.

While The Zombies are in Austin, they'll be playing other SXSW shows, including one of the just-mentioned Waterloo Records free day parties. They play the one on March 16 with Ra Ra Riot, Indians, Mikal Cronin, Dawes, Fidlar, and Civil Twilight. Zombies go on at noon.

These shows all happen before Elephant Stone heads out on tour with The Black Angels and Allah-Lahs (Elephant Stone frontman Rishi Dhir has played sitar in Black Angels) and that tour brings all three bands to Austin at the end of April for Austin Psych Fest. Elephant Stone also have dates in Dallas (2/24) and Denton (2/24) before Psych Fest.

A list of all dates, a stream of Elephant Stone's new album, and a classic Zombies track stream below...

Like on Friday and Sunday (pics on the way), I didn't catch everyone at Austin Psych Fest on Saturday, though like Jeff Mangum (he was in the audience) who played the Moody Theater on Sunday, I did catch Olivia Tremor Control in addition to The Black Lips. I also saw all the other bands you see pictured below...

psychfest2012 Day 1 @ Emo's and Beauty Ballroom - 4/27/2012

Austin Psych Fest continues today, Saturday, 4/28, at Emo's East and Beauty Ballroom where it started yesterday. Check the full schedule HERE.

I arrived on Friday in time to catch Lockett Pundt of Deerhunter's project Lotus Plaza, missed Psychic Ills, but then caught everyone else until the end which meant I saw Lotus Plaza tour-mates (featuring Steve Shelly from Sonic Youth on Drums) Disappears, locals Sleep Over and Ringo Deathstarr and fest co-founders The Black Angels, as well as Dead Meadow, Sun Araw and Peaking Lights. Pictures from all of that, below...

ANDREW, SCOTT & LAURA (Members of Elf Power & The Gerbils)
Elephant 6

Those heading to Psych Fest tonight (4/28) should brush up on your Elephant 6 (whose website has been hacked, so don't go there) family spotting skills because with Olivia Tremor Control playing an 11:30pm set, one day before Scott Spillane of The Gerbils and Andrew Reiger and Laura Carter of Elf Power open for Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel at Moody Theater. Jeff, who just played Coachella, also has nothing on his schedule tonight (though we have no idea if he's actually in town a day early and aren't trying to start rumors or anything).

All JM and OLTC dates are listed below...

Black Lips at Coachella (more by David Andrako)
Black Lips

Austin Psych Fest is finally here and like any festival with a large number of bands, it's not without its casualties:

Unfortunately the Intelligence had to cancel their tour, and will no longer be playing the festival. They will have a new album out in 2012, look out for it!

Due to a situation out of the band and festival's control, ... And You Will Know Us By The Trail of The Dead will no longer be able to perform their set at Austin Psych Fest. Our best wishes to the Trail of The Dead and hopefully we'll have them back for 2013, stay tuned...

While those cancellations are a bummer, the festival has since added names like Thee Oh Sees, Meat Puppets, and many more to their venerable roster. Check out the full schedule below, and order your tickets or weekend passes.

Austin Psych Fest officially kicks off on Friday (4/27) but had its first event, a screening, on Monday (4/23) and meanwhile has been hosting some pre-parties which continue tonight (4/26) with Indian Jewelry, Christian Bland and The Revelators, The Wolf, Slow Motion Rider, Cerise, Chief Nowhere, and Rishi at Red 7. Entry is free with your ASF week pass or $15 at the door.

Full schedule of Austin Psych Fest events is below.

Timber Timbre

While the Mastodon-covering Feist, who recently played Coachella, is holding it down in Marfa tonight (4/25), her tour-mate and fellow Arts & Crafts-signed Canadians Timber Timbre will headline their own Austin show at Lamberts with Jesse Woods. Tickets are available.

Feist & TT reunite on Thursday for a sold out show at Stubb's, but not for long. From there Feist heads to New Orleans for Jazz Fest while TT plays shows in San Antonio and Denton with The Meat Puppets who then visit Austin to play Austin Psych Fest at Emo's East with Brian Jonestown Massacre on Sunday (tickets still available). Feist & TT then meet up again in Indiana.

All tour dates and a TT video, below...

Austin Psych Fest

We knew the dates (April 27th - 29th), but now The Reverberation Appreciation Society and The Black Angels have released the initial lineup poster for the 5th annual Austin Psych Fest and it looks aswesome as usual. As mentioned on BrooklynVegan, this year's fest will take place at Austin's two newest big venues, Emo's East and Beauty Ballroom right next door.

Emo's East is now the only Emo's since their Red River location closed on 12/30, and the Beauty Ballroom is (hopefully) having their rescheduled Grand Opening on January 27th (with Theophilus London and Treasure Fingers) and continuing on January 28th.

APF will feature around 60 bands over the three day, two venue event. About 40 are included in the poster above (and listed below), with another 20 or so to be announced in March. Announced bands include the Black Angels (who played Emo's East on New Year's Eve), the Black Lips, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Dead Meadow, Olivia Tremor Control, Wooden Shijps, and many more. Weekend passes go on sale this Saturday (January 21st) at 12pm CST at austinpsychfest.com.

Austin Psych Fest

Austin Psych Fest, which returns in April 2012, hosted many great bands in late April 2011 at Seaholm Power Plant. We previously posted sets of pictures of Spectrum, Black Moth Super Rainbow, Prefuse 73, Black Ryder and Bass Drum of Death, but now check out belated sets of Cloud Canyon, Beaches, Pontiak, Sleepy Sun, Lumerians, The Fresh & Onlys, Soft Moon, and Lower Heaven (all from the 2nd day of the three day fest), below...

Black Moth Super Rainbow

Austin Psych Fest, which happened at Seaholm Power Plant in April 2011, is going down from April 27-29 in 2012 at a venue TBA. According to APF's site:

The good news is that we have some of our favorite bands in the world (and a few that we've been trying to bring to the festival for years) on our 2012 lineup and we've found an amazing setting for the festival this year. The bad news is that we have to keep it under wraps a little longer.

No one is more excited and anxious about the release of this information than we are, but we're just not able to yet. Sign up for our newsletter to be the first to know the good news when it's released.

Tickets will be available soon after the lineup and venue are announced.

Check out a video that Vice recently released from their stop at Austin Psych Fest last year below...
