King Diamond / Nas / Sick of It All
Fun Fun Fun Fest continued at Austin's Auditorium Shores on Saturday (11/8) after kicking off a day earlier. Day 2 brought another great and varied lineup with theatrical metal legend King Diamond, Nas playing the seminal Illmatic in full, consistently great indie rock from Modest Mouse, The New Pornographers and more, hardcore vets Sick of It All playing from the Blood Sweat/Scratch the Surface era, garage rock from Black Lips, King Tuff, and Twin Peaks, handsome punks Iceage, an industrial-tinged set from synth pop pioneer Gary Numan, Canadian rippers METZ, post-hardcore crushers Glassjaw, debaucherous psych band Fat White Family, and more.

The Black Lips do not seem to be slowing down anytime soon. They recently hit Austin for Psych Fest while on tour in support of their new album Underneath the Rainbow via Vice Records. The tour ends in their hometown of Atlanta, Georgia on October 4 but the Black Lips will be back in Austin on November 8 for Fun Fun Fun Fest.

Our Heart Aches For Syria Benefit @ Long Center - 3/15/2013
One of the many SXSW events BrooklynVegan had some part in this year, and the most random one, was the "Our Heart Aches For Syria" benefit at the Long Center on the Friday night of SXSW Music. Taking place near and after the Flaming Lips show at Auditorium Shores, locals The Young opened the Omar Souleyman-headlined night to an awkwardly small amount of people in an awkwardly large venue. More people eventually showed, though let's face it, this show should have been at a packed, rowdy 500 capacity space near 6th Street instead of inside a 2500 person theater off the beaten path (those who first conceived this event anticipated a bigger lineup with a bigger sponsor). That said, it was still a great lineup and a fun night, and it was Deradoorian's exclusive SXSW show, and possibly Deer Tick's only SXSW show, and a nice amount of money was raised for those in need. Here are some pictures. More below....
BrooklynVegan is presenting three nighttime shows at SXSW this year, one of which is a special night with Omar Souleman and friends. To quote SXSW:
SXSW is proud to announce an interview with Syrian artist and cult international legend Omar Souleyman on March 15th from 5-6pm in ACC room 16AB. Omar will speak with Daily Dot Editor Austin Powell about the issues surrounding the devastating conflict in his home country, the evolution of the Syrian music landscape, and what the future may hold for himself and artists like him.BrooklynVegan is also throwing a bunch of day parties.
Later that evening Omar will be joined by the amazing Black Lips, Deer Tick and more in a special performance at a Red Cross benefit aptly named Our Heart Aches For Syria. The show takes place at Long Center For The Performing Arts beginning at 9pm on Friday 3/15 after the Flaming Lips Auditorium Shores show. Donations are $10 with all money going to the International Red Cross's Syrian Arab Red Crescent. Please join us for a spectacular evening for a great cause. THIS SHOW IS OPEN TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC

Atlanta troublemakers Black Lips were one of the many bands named in SXSW 2013's third round of artists announcement. While we don't have any more specifics than that, the band will tour West after the fest and all tour dates are listed below.
Meanwhile, the folks at NOISEY just posted a short-form documentary about Black Lips recent trip to the Middle East and you can watch that below. Filmmaker Bill Cody is working on a full-length documentary about the band in Egypt and is currently seeking funding via Indiegogo. A trailer for that is below as well.

RUN DMC / Black Lips with Val Kilmer /Against Me!
The best part about Austin's annual good time known as Fun Fun Fun Fest is diversity. While punk and metal are driving the tattoo-sleeved set nuts on the Black Stage (pics HERE and HERE), there is an entirely different festival going on at some of the other stages - legendary MCs to movie star cameros, punk legends to some of the best indie bands on the come-up. .
In this post are another set of pics from day one, this time from photographer Glen Brown, including shots of Black Lips with Val Kilmer and Rooney Mara (part of a Terrence Malick movie shoot, more HERE), Against Me!, and Run DMC, plus X, Not In The Face, Dum Dum Girls, Cursive, Diamond Rings, Sharon Van Etten, more Napalm Death, more Converge, Astronautilus, Bob Mould, and Tomahawk.

To quote one YouTuber, "As part of the Terrence Malick movie being filmed in Austin, here's Val Kilmer acting "drunk" using a chainsaw on a speaker and cutting his own hair off during a performance with the Black Lips at Fun Fun Fun Fest 2012 (with Rooney Mara and Michael Fassbender on stage)." UPDATE: Check out the full lineup WHICH DOES NOT INCLUDE BON IVER (the card was fake)
Bon Iver at an ACL taping (more by Tim Griffin)
ACL Fest has been revealing artists via lottery tickets who will be at this year's festival, which goes down in Austin from October 12-14. So far, they've confirmed Jack White, Bon Iver, Zola Jesus, The Black Keys, Black Lips, Alabama Shakes, A-Trak, Kimbra, Punch Brothers, Andrew Bird, Steve Earle, Childish Gambino, Delta Spirit, LP, Quiet Company, Freelance Whales, Barrington Levy, Esperanza Spalding, A-Trak, Gary Clark Jr., Bombay Bicycle Club, and Two Door Cinema Club.
This past Friday (5/18), we posted that Red Hot Chili Peppers are playing, due to a lotto ticket that appeared on ACL's Facebook page (and it's still there). CoS is however reporting that the ticket is a fake and the ACL publicist has confirmed the same to us. Does that mean they're not actually playing? Is there some kind of conspiracy going on????? (Does anyone even actually care?) ACL Mike says:
Flea and I discussed this, among and other things, and the truth? Well, I'm not sure if you can handle it.UPDATE: They are in fact playing. Check out the full lineup.
An excerpt of our conversation:
Me: So Flea, what's up in October?
Flea: Hey buddy, we don't hang anymore, it's like we're drifting apart. What's up with THAT?!
The date would certainly fit in RHCP's schedule. Stay tuned for the full lineup announcement in less than 24 hours to find out..

Bill Doss of Olivia Tremor Control shows his approval @ Psych Fest - 4/28/2012
Like on Friday and Sunday (pics on the way), I didn't catch everyone at Austin Psych Fest on Saturday, though like Jeff Mangum (he was in the audience) who played the Moody Theater on Sunday, I did catch Olivia Tremor Control in addition to The Black Lips. I also saw all the other bands you see pictured below...

We knew the dates (April 27th - 29th), but now The Reverberation Appreciation Society and The Black Angels have released the initial lineup poster for the 5th annual Austin Psych Fest and it looks aswesome as usual. As mentioned on BrooklynVegan, this year's fest will take place at Austin's two newest big venues, Emo's East and Beauty Ballroom right next door.
Emo's East is now the only Emo's since their Red River location closed on 12/30, and the Beauty Ballroom is (hopefully) having their rescheduled Grand Opening on January 27th (with Theophilus London and Treasure Fingers) and continuing on January 28th.
APF will feature around 60 bands over the three day, two venue event. About 40 are included in the poster above (and listed below), with another 20 or so to be announced in March. Announced bands include the Black Angels (who played Emo's East on New Year's Eve), the Black Lips, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Dead Meadow, Olivia Tremor Control, Wooden Shijps, and many more. Weekend passes go on sale this Saturday (January 21st) at 12pm CST at austinpsychfest.com.
