Torres & Lady Lamb The Beekeeper on 6/12/2013
Torres @ Mohawk - 6/12/2013
Lady Lamb The Beekeeper @ Mohawk - 6/12/2013

Torres and Lady Lamb The Beekeeper brought their tour to Austin last week (6/12) for a show at Mohawk inside. Local link-minded musician Dana Falconberry got the night started, but unfortunately I missed her. I did make it for Lady Lamb though (who opened her set in the dark with and with no instrumental accompaniment) and Torres. Pictures of both of those sets are in this post.

They continue below...

Griffinshot & Dave the Dog in 2012

I've been hounded for the last few weeks to do a 'best of' post for the shows I've been to and the pictures I've taken in 2012. After several false starts, I decided to just walk through chronologically and try and do justice to all of the wonderful shows without missing too much. Frankly I should be concentrating on posting all of the stuff I shot that never made it live instead of this (woops), but that is next on my list.

The pictures aren't meant to be exhaustive or all-inclusive of what was the best (I'm certain I've missed many things; I'm not even touching festival stuff, and I went to BELGIUM!), but here we go. Personally 2012 was quite the roller-coaster, and every show was a wonderful escape. Some of the shots may or may not be my best work - but if it's in here, then the show, band or bands there, venue and everyone else involved were some of my favorites for 2012 (at least up until November). Loved Gary Clark Jr. and Esperanza Spalding too, but since they are recent you'd find them easily enough.

Have at it. Pictures below. Apologies to anyone I've left out.

Dana Falconberry @ Frontier Bar - 9/9/2012

Dana Falconberry's new album, Leelanau, is coming out on October 9. As we mentioned previously, the release party is this week at The Scottish Rite Theater on Thursday (10/4). KUT and BVAustin will be presenting the show and tickets are available now.

She'll be accompanied for the performance by the Tosca String Quartet and Elaine Barber on harp, with special guests Marmalakes and Good Field.

After the party she'll be headed up to Dallas, hitting the road with My Jerusalem through the first half of October. Besides both being from Austin, the two bands have more in common: My Jerusalem's album Preachers also comes out October 9.

The second half of the month has her touring with fellow Austinites Heartless Bastards, as well as Futurebirds (who are from R.E.M.'s hometown of Athens, GA).

Back in early September Lucy The Poodle presented a free show featuring Dana at Frontier Bar with Silver Ships, Eliza Rickman, and Technicolor Hearts (who will be at CMJ this year with BVAustin for The Texas Takeover Party). Unpublished pictures from the Frontier Bar show are in this post.

See more pictures from all of the bands from the September show, along with Dana's upcoming tour dates below.

Dana Falconberry @ Mohawk - 8/10/2012

On 8/10 Dana Falconberry kicked off her tour at The Mohawk, performing with Some Say Leland and Shawn Jones (of The Lovely Sparrows). I wasn't able to make Shawn's set (though I heard it was quite good), but did catch all of the rest.

Pictures of Some Say Leland and Dana Falconberry, as well as a list of Dana's current tour dates, are below (and a video, too).

Megafaun @ Mohawk on 4/10/2012
Megafaun @ Mohawk on 4/10/2012

As just mentioned on BrooklynVegan (where you can also download two tracks), Field Report is the project of Chris Portfield, the remaining ex-member of DeYarmond Edison who didn't go on to form Bon Iver or Megafaun. Field Report made their live debut at SXSW in Austin, where they played Hotel Vegan (pics of that HERE) and followed it with a tour with Megafaun. That tour brought the band back to Austin on 4/10 for a show at Mohawk with Dana Falconberry. More pictures from that show, below...

Dana Falconberry @ Mohawk on 4/10/2012

Dana Falconberry, who played a "secret show" last night (4/24), opened for Field Report and Megafaun back on 4/10 at the Mohawk, the same venue she will play with Father John Misty & Har Mar Superstar in May. Meanwhile catch her play a free show inside Stubb's after Timber Timbre and Feist this Thursday (4/26). Check her site for even more tour dates.

Here are some pictures from her 4/10 Mohawk set. More of them and a video (that will allow you to hear her sweet voice), below...

Father John Misty @ Hotel Vegan
BrooklynVegan @ SXSW 2012 - Hotel Vegas and the Voldstead Lounge

A talkative and solo and tired Father John Misty (aka J. Tillman, ex-Fleet Foxes) played the big, outdoor stage at Hotel Vegan (aka Hotel Vegas) on the final Saturday of SXSW 2012. The Dallas Observer was there and wrote:

Well, I already had Father John Misty, former drummer for Fleet Foxes, aka J. Tillman, picked out as my best set of the day, when he played one of those hazy, early afternoon Saturday SXSW sets. He's been on a sort of one-man anti-SXSW comedy tour over the last few days, and at Hotel Vegas' outside stage yesterday, he looked and sounded on the verge of breaking. There was his Doritos tirade from Friday, which he apologized for, but didn't have to, then this: "This fest is like the singing Olympics," he said between singing some awfully pretty acoustic songs. "And I have failed you. I've played five sets and each had a hurdle. Today, that hurdle is a truck full of generators... Can you all hear that truck OK?"
Hear Ya said:
I was really hoping to hear with him a full band - partly to not have to listen to his ramblings. While I really enjoy his new album, his set was a bit of a bummer. He bitched about the corporate sponsorships, the amount of times he had to play, his name, etc. My job has problems too but I don't sit in front of my clients complaining about them.

Father John Misty heads out on a tour in May, backed by a full band. That tour will be supported by none other than Har Mar Superstar and hits Austin at the Mohawk on May 26. Tickets for the Texas show are on sale. it will be Har Mar's 5th Mohawk show this year. All tour dates and some more pictures from Hotel Vegan, below...

Shearwater @ BV-CMJ 2008 (more by Kyle Dean Reinford)

The now-Sub Pop signed Shearwater will be out on the road with Sharon Van Etten (their former tour manager) in February, but return home in time for a show at Antone's on March 4th. Tickets are on sale. The Austin show is with Dana Falconberry & Marmalakes who also play with Shearwater one night earlier at Fitzgeralds in Houston.

Broke? Shearwater also play a free-instore at Waterloo on March 11th, exactly one month after the Antone's show. Their new album Animal Joy is out 2/14. All tour dates are listed below...
