MIA / Glass Candy / Judge @ FFF Fest, 11/9/2013 - Day 2
Banging out a raging "Galang" from her 2004 Piracy Funds Terrorism, Vol. 1 mixtape mid-set might've seemed a momentary backstep had it not immediately been followed by stagehands dragging giddy audience "Bad Girls" up onstage to help "Bring the Noize" via the femme-anthemics of "Boyz."Day 2 of Fun Fun Fun Fest 2013 (Saturday, 11/9) featured sets from MIA, Deerhunter, and Television, and we already posted one set of pictures with their performances, and now we have another set from the entire day that also includes Pelican, Descendents, Chromatics, Judge, Chelsea Light Moving, Antwon, White Lung, Ice-T (with and without Body Count), and more. Those are in this post.
End of night?
Not until incendiary new single "Y.A.L.A" big-boomed like a suicide audio bomber intent on rapturing all within earshot up to M.I.A.'s version of agitpop paradise via flaming "Paper Planes."

Deerhunger & M.I.A.
A sizable crowd anticipated Television on Fun Fun Fun Fest's Orange stage Saturday night, minus the hipster kids waiting for a chance at a prime spot for Deerhunter next, and no wonder. The NYC innovators tour Europe far more than their own country, and rarely - if ever - perform in Texas. We'll have plenty more from Fun Fun Fun Fest 2013 in a bit, but meanwhile, here are some pictures from Day 2 to follow the ones you saw of Snoop Dogg, Cut Copy & Bill Callahan and from Day 1. More crowd shots and pictures of M.I.A. (who we also just caught in NYC), Ice-T (that guy from Law & Order), Television (not to be confused with the thing you watch Law & Order on), and Deerhunter (yep, we managed to catch a bit of TV and Bradford Cox too), below...
While some will argue that this incarnation isn't Television without Richard Lloyd, who quit in 2006, replacement Jimmy Rip has had a few years to assimilate, marking enough time in leader Tom Verlaine's band for the chemistry to be there.
Whether this brief set met the audience's expectations is another question. Never the most demonstrative of rock bands, Television relies on its material and musicianship to sell the performance, much like the jazz musicians from which Verlaine takes so much inspiration. That's an approach that works better in a club than at an outdoor festival.

Boris @ Austin Psych Fest Day 2 - 4/27/2013
Deerhunter, Os Mutantes, a reformed Kaleidoscope, Japanese experimental rockers Boris, and a little rain were some of the more memorable parts of Day 2 of Austin Psych Fest at Carson Creek Ranch. Check out a full set of pictures from Saturday's slightly damp festivities over at BrooklynVegan.
Austin Psych Fest 2013
Austin Psych Fest is less than a month away (April 26 to 28), and the full line up is out (on the flyer above and listed below) as are the breakdowns by day. As we mentioned previously, this year it's being held at Carson Creek Ranch (about 20 minutes from downtown) and offers overnight camping -- which is a pretty big change from previous years.
This year's line-up is pretty amazing, featuring Deerhunter, Os Mutantes, Silver Apples, Sweden's GOAT, Billy Gibbons' pre-ZZ Top band Moving Sidewalks (who played NYC recently), Roky Erickson, Clinic, Black Mountain, Black Rebel Motorcyle Club, Black Angels, Tamaryn, Raveonettes, Warpaint... and tons more. Tickets and Weekend Passes are on sale now. See which artists are playing which day below...

Lotus Plaza, the project of Deerhunter guitarist Lockett Pundt, has been continuing to tour in support of his great new album, Spooky Action at a Distance. That tour came to Austin at the end of last month for Austin Psych Fest. This past Monday (5/7) it hit the Doug Fir Lounge in Portland with Wymond Miles (of Fresh & Onlys) and Frankie Broyles. Pictures and videos from that show are in this post.
The rest of Lotus Plaza's tour, which continues through late July, doesn't include any more Austin dates at the moment, but the band will be back in Texas next week for shows at Lowbrow Palace on 5/13 in El Paso and Fitzgerald's on 5/15 in Houston.
