Cansei de Ser Sexy (CSS) @ Emo's East - 7/18/2013

Brazil's CSS brought their tour in support of their new Dave Sitek-produced album, Planta, to Austin last night (7/18) for a show at Emo's East. Support on the show, and other dates on the tour's final leg, came from likeminded bands MNDR and Austin locals Feathers. Like other shows on the tour, CSS played a good mix of the new album and older favorites. They were also joined on stage at one point by Austin's Hard Proof Afrobeat as a backing brass section. Meanwhile. the Psychedelic Furs were playing a sold out show right next door at the new Antone's (formerly Beauty Ballroom),

Pictures from the CSS show, including one of the setlist, are in this post. They continue below...

MS MR @ The Jr in old Emo's for BrooklynVegan SXSW 2013

""Old Emo's" is code for the place where the legendary rock club Emo's used to be before it moved to some distant region southeast of downtown Austin. Still, the shell of the old venue (and the memories that come with it) are still there, so Brooklyn Vegan seized on it to book a number of day parties full of blog-favorite acts. Two highlights were Autre Ne Veut, who kept the audience in a trance on the outside stage, and Unknown Mortal Orchestra, whose psych-lite indie-rock provided a great respite from the loud and unruly crowds out on Sixth Street." [EW.com]
You've already seen photos from the BrooklynVegan Saturday day party at old Emo's HERE, HERE and HERE. Here's one more set of some of the bands that played that day. It continues below...

Ume at Fun Fun Fun Fest 2012 (more by Glen Brown)

It's that time of year again. In Austin, the first week (well a little more than a week actually) of January is free week, which is a week of mostly local bands playing free shows in local venues. This year, the shows will happen at Beerland, Red 7, The Mohawk, Beauty Ballroom, Stubb's, The Scoot Inn, Holy Mountain, Frank, Swan Dive, Antone's, Flamingo Cantina, Emo's, Lamberts, The Parish, and more.

This year's shows include the first two nights of Shakey Graves' weekly residency at Parish (1/2 & 1/9, though the following three nights are also free), Parquet Courts at Beerland tonight (1/2) (which is part of their tour) with Sweet Talk and others, Dikes of Holland, The Be Helds, Bad Banana, and Church Shoes at Hotel Vegas tonight, Ume, My Jerusalem and more at Emo's on 1/4, Sleep Over, Orthy, Feathers, and more at Holy Mountain on 1/4, Leftover Crack at Beauty Ballroom on 1/5, Riverboat Gamblers at Mohawk on 1/11, Jonathan Toubin at Red 7 on 1/11, and many more. Griffinshot & Dave the Dog in 2012

I've been hounded for the last few weeks to do a 'best of' post for the shows I've been to and the pictures I've taken in 2012. After several false starts, I decided to just walk through chronologically and try and do justice to all of the wonderful shows without missing too much. Frankly I should be concentrating on posting all of the stuff I shot that never made it live instead of this (woops), but that is next on my list.

The pictures aren't meant to be exhaustive or all-inclusive of what was the best (I'm certain I've missed many things; I'm not even touching festival stuff, and I went to BELGIUM!), but here we go. Personally 2012 was quite the roller-coaster, and every show was a wonderful escape. Some of the shots may or may not be my best work - but if it's in here, then the show, band or bands there, venue and everyone else involved were some of my favorites for 2012 (at least up until November). Loved Gary Clark Jr. and Esperanza Spalding too, but since they are recent you'd find them easily enough.

Have at it. Pictures below. Apologies to anyone I've left out.

FunFunFun Fest 2012 Bingo!

While we've had some teasers in the last few weeks - Wednesday night was the night for BINGO - and the full Fun Fun Fun Fest reveal.

On 7/11 (Happy Slurpee Day!) Fun Fun Fun held their bingo-to-reveal-the-artists event, and while we already knew about Run DMC reuniting and some others, there were quite a few surprises in the massive list of musical acts and comedians announced (Public Image Ltd., Youth of Today, De La Soul, X, Bob Mould, Saul Williams, and Hannibal Burress to name a few).

The headliners (in addition to the aforementioned Run DMC reunion) are an electic-but-looked-forward-to group: Santigold, Refused, and for Comedy David Cross.

Three-day and PIP passes go on sale on Thursday at 10AM CST and will no doubt move fast. Get them here once the clock passes 9:59...

BV Free Day Show - Thursday @ Hotel Vegas on 3/15/2012

BrooklynVegan's Hotel Vegan, located at Austin venues Hotel Vegas & Volstead Lounge, began at noon back on Thursday, 3/15/2012, on three stages in partnership with M For Montreal. One of those stages was the BV Austin stage which you already saw a full set of pictures from. Here are some more from all the stages.

Like on Friday and all four days, we served complimentary HobNob Wines. We also proudly passed out Sailor Jerry drinks.

Special thanks to Supercuts who were giving out free haircuts all day and to our official backline providers Vox, Blackstar and Korg, and thank you to ASCAP, and to NadaMoo for supplying free vegan treats, and to Honest Tea for the tea.

Bill talked about a lot of this day,. The full set of pictures, slightly beleated, from the entire SXSW Thursday at Hotel Vegan, below...

Black Lips at Coachella (more by David Andrako)
Black Lips

Austin Psych Fest is finally here and like any festival with a large number of bands, it's not without its casualties:

Unfortunately the Intelligence had to cancel their tour, and will no longer be playing the festival. They will have a new album out in 2012, look out for it!

Due to a situation out of the band and festival's control, ... And You Will Know Us By The Trail of The Dead will no longer be able to perform their set at Austin Psych Fest. Our best wishes to the Trail of The Dead and hopefully we'll have them back for 2013, stay tuned...

While those cancellations are a bummer, the festival has since added names like Thee Oh Sees, Meat Puppets, and many more to their venerable roster. Check out the full schedule below, and order your tickets or weekend passes.

Austin Psych Fest officially kicks off on Friday (4/27) but had its first event, a screening, on Monday (4/23) and meanwhile has been hosting some pre-parties which continue tonight (4/26) with Indian Jewelry, Christian Bland and The Revelators, The Wolf, Slow Motion Rider, Cerise, Chief Nowhere, and Rishi at Red 7. Entry is free with your ASF week pass or $15 at the door.

Full schedule of Austin Psych Fest events is below.

Ringo Deathstarr @ Hotel Vegan (by Amanda Hatfield)
BrooklynVegan @ SXSW 2012 - Hotel Vegas and the Volstead Lounge

"One of my favorite Austin bands, Ringo Deathstarr, do the shoegaze thing better just about any current band. Good and loud!" - Bill Pearis
The BV Austin stage was located inside Volstead Lounge at Hotel Vegan on Thursday, 3/15, during SXSW, and though the schedule looked like this: 12:15 Love Inks, 1:00 Feathers, 1:45 Gashcat, 2:30 Ringo Deathstarr, 3:15 Silent Diane, 4:00 The Young, and 5:00 Ume, we actually moved Ume on to the Hotel Vegas inside stage to accomodate more people and a certain TV camera crew for their set. It was still intimate though, or to quote, Anthony Bourdain, it was "A shitload of rawk in a tiny little room!"

Galexy Gehring of Ringo Deathstarr, who PACKED the room at 2:30, was a trooper and played two sets during the day. The first was with Feathers at 1:00. Bill Pearis wrote:

Feathers have barely been together six months but they have clearly spent that time practicing. They have it together and this was one of my favorite sets of the week. Most of their material is of the gothy electro variety, they opened with a Norman Greenbaum-style glammy stomper that I really dug. A lot of instrument switching showcased most of the members of the band.
Special thanks to Love Inks for starting the day off so early. A noon slot is never easy, but they handled it with grace. Catch them during the evening hours on April 17 at Mohawk after Chairlift.

Gaschat played a great set of Neutral Milk Hotel-like jams, much like they did later that day at the Sub Pop official SXSW showcase. NPR likes them too, but not their name.

With three stages running at the same time at 'Hotel Vegan', I would miss a band or two, and sadly Silent Diane was one of them, but Tim, Amanda and a SPIN photographer made sure to catch them though. I also missed Silent Diane's set later that night at Neon Indian's label showcase, but hope to see them on their upcoming massive tour.

At 4:00, The Young rocked a BrooklynVegan party for the 2nd day in a row. Their first BV set was the night before at Bar 96. Catch them when they open for Frankie Rose & DIVE (both artists who also played Hotel Vegan) at Red 7 on April 14.

Special thanks to a Sailor Jerry, HobNob Wines, and Honest Tea for providing refreshments. Thanks also to our backline partners Korg, Vox, and Blackstar Amplification for helping make the sound happen.

Check out more pictures from the whole BV Austin portion of the day, below...

Half Moon Run
Half Moon Run

After getting in late Wednesday, Thursday was my first full day in Austin, and maybe the best, music-wise. Daylight hours were spent at the second of our day parties at Hotel Vegas which we dubbed Hotel Vegan. I was running a little late so I missed Iceland's Of Monsters and Men, but we were running late on one of the inside stages, so I got there in time to see Montreal's Half Moon Run (today was the day we teamed up with M For Montreal). Three-part harmonies, intermingling guitar parts, bonus percussion -- it's a little Radiohead by way of '60s folk rock. Their debut album, Dark Eyes, is out next week.

The Volstead Stage at Hotel Vegan was dubbed the BV Austin stage on Thursday with all local bands.

We Are Serenades
We Are Serenades

Adam Olenius fronts Shout Out Louds and Markus Krunegård of Laakso comprise Swedish superduo We Are Serenades who are a full band live. While both come from indie backgrounds this is full-on commercial pop and ridiculously catchy. Was happy they played their single "Come Home" even if it is a Christmas song.

Thus Owls

When not backing Patrick Watson, his band perform under the name Thus:Owls with Swedish singer Erika Angell fronting. They played the inside stage -- the only air-conditioned place in Hotel Vegan on a very humid day -- and held the audience rapt with their understated but drama-filled arrangements.

Cymbals Eat Guitars
Cymabls Eat Guitars

Cymbals Eat Guitars, in NYC at least, play much much bigger rooms than the tiny inside stage of Hotel Vegas so it was a treat to see them in tight quarters.

The Velvet Teen
Velvet Teen

Holy early aughts! Anthemic Californians The Velvet Teen, who I didn't know were still together, packed the inside stage with dedicated fans.

Ringo Deathstarr on the BV Austin stage
Ringo Deathstarr

One of my favorite Austin bands, Ringo Deathstarr, do the shoegaze thing better just about any current band. Good and loud!

Lot of Swedes today. Radio Department offshoot Korallreven played the main stage and proved a perfect soundtrack to a mid-afternoon chillout session sitting on the grass, drinking a beer.

The Young
The Young

The Young played our official showcase the night before as well and we like them so much we couldn't not have them on the BV Austin stage too. Straight-up rock and roll done right.

The Drums
The Drums

Once known for using a lot of prerecorded backing and making up for it with a lot of entertaining jumping around, The Drums have become a real band since releasing their second album. I miss the crazy tambourine playing of old, but the Drums sounded great.

Famous vegan-hater Anthony Bourdain put aside his prejudices check out Ume with his No Reservations film crew in tow. "A shitload if rawk in a tiny little room!" he Tweeted. Indeed, Tony, indeed. We originally had Ume playing last on the Volstead BV Austin stage but moved them inside the bigger Hotel Vegas room to better accommodate the film crew. We were also running late in there, so they were shoved before The Jealous Sound who ended up going on over an hour after schedule.

The Wedding Present
The Wedding Present

We didn't get Seamonsters in full like they'd do at the Cake Shop showcase on Friday night, but The Wedding Present definitely pulled out some old favorites for their Hotel Vegan main stage performance, including 1986 single "You Should Always Keep in Touch with Your Friends" which opened their rocking set. Frontman David Gedge, who is 52 but looks at least 15 years younger, throws his all into his guitar. The Wedding Present played a lot of shows during SXSW, don't know how he does it.

After a full day at Hotel Vegan, it was taco time, with a brief stop at Cheer Up Charlies to catch some of Caveman's set. Then the first show of the night: Scottish pop band Spectrals at Swan Dive who, I must admit, were rather lackluster live. I loved Louis Jones' early singles and 2010 EP but there was no energy on stage, save for the bassist who danced around the whole time like he was in a different group. Disappointing.

Over at the Beauty Bar it was SISU aka Dum Dum Girls drummer Sandy Vu's band. They were minus their drummer, who missed his flight or something, but Dum Dum Girls guitarist Jules sat on the drumstool and sang harmonies. Still sounded great in amputated form: glide guitar, ethereal vocals, volume.

DZ Deathrays
DZ Deathrays

Speaking of volume, Australian duo DZ Deathrays were next and the nitro-blues sonic assault blew right through my earplugs. I mean LOUD. How do two people make that much noise?

Allah Las
Allah Las

One of the best things I saw at SXSW. 12-string guitars, Vox bass, bolo ties, nehru collars... Los Angeles' Allah Las are a pristine recreation of '60s West Coast pop with great songs like upcoming single "Tell Me What's on Your Mind." Not pastiche, the real deal.

Wrapping up my Thursday was London band Fiction who were a bit like Wild Beasts if less over-the-top. A lot of Big Rhythms. Not bad, will have to keep an eye on these guys.

"An amazing HUGE thank you to everybody who came out last night! We hope you're all as hungover as we are. Thank you thank you thank you!" - Learning Secrets

Midnight Magic @ Beauty Bar - 1/28/2012
Midnight Magic @ Beauty Bar - 1/28/2012

What's cool is that Learning Secrets parties are rather unpretentious considering the crowd drawn and the talent booked. Packed, but unpretentious. We're not talking bottle service and velvet ropes, we're talking divey dance floors of sheer abandon.

For Learning Secret's 8th birthday celebration on Saturday night, Ian Orth and eramy Neugent Neugent [flew in] Midnight Magic from New York -- a six-piece disco ensemble comprised of members of Hercules & Love Affair -- for a special, one-off show. [CultureMap]

Crazy night Saturday in Austin as Ted Leo and friends celebrated Esme Barrera, power went out on 6th St. which cut the Oh Snap! fest short, Beauty Ballroom hosted a cast of characters including Daniel Johnston for their Grand Opening weekend, and Beauty Bar hosted an 8th Anniversary party for Learning Secrets. Feathers @ ND501 - 1/5/2012

Free Week in Austin is well underway, and on Thursday night (1/5), as we mentioned they would, Feathers played a free show at ND at 501 Studios (where Neil Hamburger will be very soon). Tim was there and caught the last two acts on the bill - Feathers and Rickey Jean Francois (not to be confused with this Ricky Jean Francois). His pictures are in this post, which is also our third post containing Feathers pictures. The other two are here and here.

To quote their Facebook, "FEATHERS is ANA STASIA
Live: + KATHLEEN, GALEXY, DESTINY, C. VOSS." You might recognize Galexy from her other band Ringo Deathstarr. As previously mentioned, Anastasia also plays in Cruel Black Dove.

Listen to a Feathers track HERE. Their next scheduled time to play Austin is SXSW, but we won't be surprised if they play again before that too. They're also heading to NYC to play Mercury Lounge on March 5th with Ramesh from Voxtrot.

More pictures from the 1/5 show (of Feathers and RJF) (Distance Runner
and Reagonometry played earlier), below...

Ernest Greene of Washed Out @ Mohawk 10/17
Washed Out @ Mohawk - 10/17/2011

Unofficially, Ernest Greene probably started that whole weird, kinda-real-kinda-a-joke genre we call chillwave. Ah, who cares? Dude makes great music, period, starting with his debut, the High Times cassette, moving onward to a remarkable Woodsist EP, the Life of Leisure EP in 2009. 2011 finally saw the Sub Pop release of Greene's debut full-length, Within and Without, which climbed all the way to #26 on the Billboard 200 and practically served as the unofficial soundtrack to summer. Requsite listening also due to the Clams Casino remix on "Amor Fati." Poolside, shoreside, dockside, or simply lounging anywhere with a bit of sunshine and good times, we'll bask in the glow with Washed Out all year round. [Filter]
Washed Out and Sleep Over played The Mohawk on 10/17 (with Feathers - who more recently played Beauty Bar and whose next show is part of Free Week). Here are some pictures from that show.
