Fun Fun Fun Fest 2013 (more by Sarah Frankie Linder)

With less than 2 months to go, today Fun Fun Fun Fest release their FFF NITES lineup:

AUSTIN, TX (September 16, 2014) - FUN FUN FUN FEST (FFF Fest) is excited to announce today the lineup for FFF Nites, the after shows free to festival wristband holders, during this year's festival November 7--9, 2014, at Auditorium Shores. The Nites performances--including over one hundred FFF performing artists and a roster of artists playing exclusively during Nites--are only available to FFF Fest wristband holders; no tickets will be sold at the door.
If you're on the fence, this might be the final push. More than seventy (74 so far if I counted correctly) of the one-hundred-plus above mentioned artists are exclusive to FFF Nites, and access is FREE with your wristband.

Speaking of FUN FUN FUN passes, you can still get them here. Do it. You could try and wait until the Scavenger Hunt to score some free passes, but why risk it?

Check out more of the release including the full FFF Nites lineup below...

Griffinshot & Dave the Dog in 2012

I've been hounded for the last few weeks to do a 'best of' post for the shows I've been to and the pictures I've taken in 2012. After several false starts, I decided to just walk through chronologically and try and do justice to all of the wonderful shows without missing too much. Frankly I should be concentrating on posting all of the stuff I shot that never made it live instead of this (woops), but that is next on my list.

The pictures aren't meant to be exhaustive or all-inclusive of what was the best (I'm certain I've missed many things; I'm not even touching festival stuff, and I went to BELGIUM!), but here we go. Personally 2012 was quite the roller-coaster, and every show was a wonderful escape. Some of the shots may or may not be my best work - but if it's in here, then the show, band or bands there, venue and everyone else involved were some of my favorites for 2012 (at least up until November). Loved Gary Clark Jr. and Esperanza Spalding too, but since they are recent you'd find them easily enough.

Have at it. Pictures below. Apologies to anyone I've left out.

Father John Misty @ Hotel Vegan
BrooklynVegan @ SXSW 2012 - Hotel Vegas and the Voldstead Lounge

A talkative and solo and tired Father John Misty (aka J. Tillman, ex-Fleet Foxes) played the big, outdoor stage at Hotel Vegan (aka Hotel Vegas) on the final Saturday of SXSW 2012. The Dallas Observer was there and wrote:

Well, I already had Father John Misty, former drummer for Fleet Foxes, aka J. Tillman, picked out as my best set of the day, when he played one of those hazy, early afternoon Saturday SXSW sets. He's been on a sort of one-man anti-SXSW comedy tour over the last few days, and at Hotel Vegas' outside stage yesterday, he looked and sounded on the verge of breaking. There was his Doritos tirade from Friday, which he apologized for, but didn't have to, then this: "This fest is like the singing Olympics," he said between singing some awfully pretty acoustic songs. "And I have failed you. I've played five sets and each had a hurdle. Today, that hurdle is a truck full of generators... Can you all hear that truck OK?"
Hear Ya said:
I was really hoping to hear with him a full band - partly to not have to listen to his ramblings. While I really enjoy his new album, his set was a bit of a bummer. He bitched about the corporate sponsorships, the amount of times he had to play, his name, etc. My job has problems too but I don't sit in front of my clients complaining about them.

Father John Misty heads out on a tour in May, backed by a full band. That tour will be supported by none other than Har Mar Superstar and hits Austin at the Mohawk on May 26. Tickets for the Texas show are on sale. it will be Har Mar's 5th Mohawk show this year. All tour dates and some more pictures from Hotel Vegan, below...

Har Mar Superstar @ Mohawk on 2/24
Har Mar Superstar @ Mohawk - 2/24/2012

Sean Tillmann, AKA Har Mar Superstar, spent the last month in Austin recording an album and performing weekly at Mohawk with Marijuana Deathsquads. On 2/24 they wrapped up their residency with Poliça and Total Fucking Blood. You've seen pictures from WEEK ONE, WEEK TWO, and WEEK THREE. Here are the shots from week four (except for Polica which are in a separate post).

Poliça played some new songs, was extremely well received, and will be back in a few weeks for SXSW. Har Mar will be joining Father John Misty (AKA J. Tilman from Fleet Foxes) for a tour and putting the finishing touches on his new album.

Pictures from the last night of Har Mar's residency continue below...

Har Mar Superstar takes a rest mid-set @ Mohawk on 2/15
Har Mar Superstar @ Mohawk - 2/15/2012

3 weeks down, 1 night to go for Har Mar Superstar's February Residency at Mohawk (he's been in Austin recording his next album minus a trip to New Orleans for Mardi Gras). On 2/15 Har Mar played with residency mates Marijuana Deathsquads and a new opener Geoff Millions. Har Mar dug deep for this performance (as seen in the 4th to last pic). Pictures are in this post from that show.

Tonight (2/24) is the the fourth and last week of his residency, and the show moves from the inside stage to the outside. Along with that switch, Poliça (pronounced po-lisa) will be joining in the fun as special guest headliner - as well as Total Fucking Blood. As of this week, there are also two new viewing tiers for the outside stage (a result of the new construction to add 150-200 to the capacity)

Poliça features Channy Leaneagh (née Casselle), who has performed with Har Mar before as part of Gayngs, in addition to being a member of (now broken up) Minneaoplis faves Roma di Luna.

From SXSW's listing for Poliça's March 15th South-By show @ IFC/Vice:

POLIÇA began as a collaboration between fellow Gayngs' members Channy Casselle and Ryan Olson in June of 2011. By July they had completed 11 songs, made the key additions of drummers Ben Ivascu and Drew Christopherson, bass player Chris Bierdan, and headed to the studio. After Mike Noyce (Bon Iver) lent his voice on Lay Your Cards Out and Wandering Star, the record was brought to Austin, TX to be mixed with Jim Eno (Spoon). In a few days, the LP was completed and the band Poliça was formed. On stage, the original beats composed by Olson play amongst Channy's passionate vocals & an intense rhythm section, that lead to a description somewhere in the area of electro-r&b goth-pop.
Polica is also playing a show at Hotel Vegan this year (more on that later).

The residency will definitely end on a high note (no pun intended - what with MJ Deathsquads and all). Ticket's are still available - get them while they last. Oh, and with the 30 degree temperature drop today (down to 41F tonight), and the high winds - dress warmly!

Pictures from the 2/15 show (as well as some of the beginning construction at Mohawk) below...
