The Specials @ Mohawk
Including Iggy Pop & The Stooges (which we already posted), SXSW Wednesday night's lineup at Mohawk aka House of Vans for the Vans Official Showcase was nothing less than an embarrassment of riches. Featuring The Specials (who also played an amazing set at Hype Hotel), Ghostface Killah, Japandroids (who we also caught at Viceland), Sky Ferreira, Middle Class Rut and special guests Killah Priest and Sheek Louch, there wwere more than enough impressive bands to go around, especially for a venue the size of Mohawk. More pictures from the show, which went down in the venue after Show No Mercy in the daytime, are in this post.
Sky Ferreira was under the weather and only played a short set that night, but still went on to perform at Mohawk as well as at 1100 Warehouse for Pitchfork.
If you missed it, check out pictures from the whole SXSW week at the Mohawk HERE. More below...

We previously posted a full set of Iggy Pop at Mohawk, but here are photos from across the week, including shots of Ghostface, The Specials, Alt-J, Cold War Kids, Skeletonwitch, Dawes, Austra, METZ and much more. Check out more photos from the House of Vans below.
VICE is coming to Austin for SXSW and will be taking over 401 E Cesar Chavez for VICELAND, which includes events from March 8-11 during the interactive portion, and from March 12-16 during the music portion. The music events feature a ton of bands like Kendrick Lamar, Action Bronson, Baauer (DJ), Parquet Courts, Snoop Lion, Major Lazer, Ghostface, Danny Brown, Divine Fits, Japandroids, Wavves, Austra, Merchandise, and many more. RSVP is open.
Fat Possum Records is teaming up with House of Vans for an official SXSW showcase which will go down at The Mohawk on March 13 (6:30 doors) with hip hop legend Ghostface Killah, ska legends The Specials, punk legends Iggy and the Stooges (who are releasing an album on Fat Possum this year), the less legendary but equally awesome Japandroids, alt-rock band Middle Class Rut, and pop singer Sky Ferreira. If you can't make it to the showcase but still want to watch it, you can stream it live on Seagate and Vans.com/SXSW.
House of Vans is taking over the Mohawk for other showcases and day parties throughout the week of SXSW (including Pitchfork's Show No Mercy party), and the full House of Vans SXSW schedule is below...

Jack McFadden, a onetime Brooklynite who moved to Austin and currently works as a talent buyer at Emo's, gave us a list of his favorite music from 2012 including top 10 albums and a Spotify playlist of his favorite songs. Check it out below.
For those counting at home, that is three talent buyers (the people who book bands into clubs) that have revealed their hand to us, including NYC's Johnny Beach and Chaos in Tejas honcho Timmy Hefner.

Scenes from Fun Fun Fun Lucky Lady Bingo via Adi Anand's Instagrams 7/11/2012
On 7/11 (Happy Slurpee Day!) Fun Fun Fun held their bingo-to-reveal-the-artists event, and while we already knew about Run DMC reuniting and some others, there were quite a few surprises in the massive list of musical acts and comedians announced (Public Image Ltd., Youth of Today, De La Soul, X, Bob Mould, Saul Williams, and Hannibal Burress to name a few).
The headliners (in addition to the aforementioned Run DMC reunion) are an electic-but-looked-forward-to group: Santigold, Refused, and for Comedy David Cross.
Three-day and PIP passes go on sale on Thursday at 10AM CST and will no doubt move fast. Get them here once the clock passes 9:59...

Japandroids at Mohawk in 2011 (more by TIm Griffin)
Noise pop duo Japandroids are set to release the followup to their 2009 debut, Post Nothing, this June on Polyvinyl. The album is called Celebration Rock and includes the 2010 single "Younger Us" (download above or stream below) and a cover of The Gun Club's "For the Love of Ivy," off of their great 1981 debut, Fire of Love. Guitarist/vocalist Brian King talked to Pitchfork about the new album and some of his favorite songwriters:
I'm a huge fan of people who are considered more professional songwriters, like Nick Cave, but I've tried not to hold myself to a standard like that. You have to work within your own limitations. But someone like Paul Westerberg is able to deliver these emotional, heartfelt scenarios while making punk-influenced rock songs at the same time. That's always been a really powerful influence on me, just because it seems more like something that I could do. Everyone loves Dylan and the Beatles, but most people know they're not just going to become that. And while you can't wake up every day thinking, "We're going to be like the Replacements" either, what they do is more like something to reach for; they seem like they come from the same place that you came from, and maybe they didn't know what they were doing anymore than you did.Japandroids will be at SXSW next week where they will play the main stage of at "Hotel Vegan" at Hotel Vegas on Wednesday (3/14). The rest of that stage's lineup is coming shortly. The other two stages on that day are HERE.
