MS MR @ The Jr in old Emo's for BrooklynVegan SXSW 2013

""Old Emo's" is code for the place where the legendary rock club Emo's used to be before it moved to some distant region southeast of downtown Austin. Still, the shell of the old venue (and the memories that come with it) are still there, so Brooklyn Vegan seized on it to book a number of day parties full of blog-favorite acts. Two highlights were Autre Ne Veut, who kept the audience in a trance on the outside stage, and Unknown Mortal Orchestra, whose psych-lite indie-rock provided a great respite from the loud and unruly crowds out on Sixth Street." [EW.com]You've already seen photos from the BrooklynVegan Saturday day party at old Emo's HERE, HERE and HERE. Here's one more set of some of the bands that played that day. It continues below...

Burger Records will be doing its annual SXSW kickoff event again this year on Wednesday, March 14 at Trailer Space Records. The all-day event is a killer mix of garage, slop-pop, space out and other styles found on the cassette-friendly label. The line-up includes Natural Child, Nu Sensae, Tashaki Miyaki, Gap Dream, Audacity and a whole bunch more. Flyer and schedule are below.
Meanwhile, Burger Records is reissuing King Tuff's 2008 album Was Dead. Look for that in April and you can stream a track below. King Tuff will be in Austin for SXSW, and though he's not listed as playing the Burger Records party, there is a "SURPRISE GUEST" slot that could be, you know, anybody. King Tuff's current tour schedule, below.

Sup Pop act King Tuff, whose new self-titled album is a great blast of skuzzy bubblegum pop, is currently on tour with Natural Child and have three shows in Texas. They'll play an in-store at Waterloo on Monday (7/9) and then later that night at Red 7 (tickets are still available). They'll then play Dallas on Tuesday (7/10) at City Tavern (tickets).
Head to BV for all tour dates and you can watch the video for "Bad Thing" below.

After King Tuff (read more about it at BrooklynVegan), my other top act of SXSW 2012 has to be Mikal Cronin. The Bay-area rocker played with a four-piece band, with Ty Segall on lead guitar at both of the two shows I saw: Friday night at Beerland and Saturday afternoon at Trailer Space Records (where Bill also caught the set). The tunes off his great self-titled record sounded poppy and sweet with the right amount of pissed-off swagger, and Ty shredding on guitar definitely helped.

In addition to holding it down four days in a row at the near-by Hotel Vegas, we are proud to be a part of the 2012 edition of the Thrasher/Converse Deathmatch, a five-day event at Scoot Inn that kicks off on Wednesday (3/14) and terminates on Sunday (3/18). As discussed, BrooklynVegan & Power of the Riff will be in charge of the Friday-day show (on 3/16), which will end at 6PM and be followed with the BrooklynVegan/Power of The Riff/Thrasher official SXSW showcase at the same venue an hour later.
Our Friday night show at Scoot Inn is one of two night shows that are part of the mostly-daytime "Deathmatch. The other night show is a Santos Party House event on Saturday that will feature a headlining appearance from "surprise guest" Willie D of The Geto Boys (!). The rest of the lineup for the Deathmatch, including set times, below....
