Torres & Lady Lamb The Beekeeper on 6/12/2013

Torres and Lady Lamb The Beekeeper brought their tour to Austin last week (6/12) for a show at Mohawk inside. Local link-minded musician Dana Falconberry got the night started, but unfortunately I missed her. I did make it for Lady Lamb though (who opened her set in the dark with and with no instrumental accompaniment) and Torres. Pictures of both of those sets are in this post.
They continue below...

CHVRCHES / Still Corners @ Mohawk - 6/5/2013

Glasgow trio Chvrches soon took the stage, led by pixie-sized Lauren Mayberry firing off 2012 single "Lies" at the onset. After the brief singalong, the group headed into unfamiliar territory, blending lush, unharnessed electro-pop. Mayberry's Scottish chirp guided everything along, maneuvering a well-crafted set built around the remaining three singles on their much-celebrated EP. Still, unfamiliar with the non-hits, many in the crowd fell into disengaged chatter.Scottish band CHVRCHES' skyrocket success really started in Austin during SXSW and the band have quickly gotten popular enough (despite only having released a handful of songs) to have fans filling every inch of the Mohawk on Wednesday (6/5). Opening the show was UK act Still Corners who just release their second album for Sub Pop (the lovely Strange Pleasures). Pictures from Mohawk are below.Chvrches remains a smartly-marketed outfit that's conquered the Googling conundrum by swapping a "u" for a "v" in their moniker. Like many of their electronic contemporaries, they operate in Tumblr instead of a traditional website, making it easy to share content. And yet, no amount of PR can make up for the fact that no one had access to the songs from their upcoming LP. Mayberry acknowledged this toward the end of the set. - [Austin Chronicle]

Fun Fun Fun Fest 2012 (more by Glen Brown)

Sorry for the late post of this. Graham actually did send us this last year, but we forgot to post it!
We posted many year-end lists from artists and other people in the music world as 2012 came to a close (browse our "Best of 2012" tag) and this one comes from Fun Fun Fun Fest/Transmission Events booker Graham Williams who gave us a list of the "best stuff of 2012." A few albums make the list, as do some live shows in Austin and a certain reunited group that Graham booked at this year's FFF Fest.
You can check out the full list below...

Godspeed You! Black Emperor @ Mohawk - 10/9/2012

"But now we all live in harder times, now a whole lot of bands react to the current heaviness by privileging the party times, like some weird Scientology will-to-power bullshit, hit that hi-hat with a square's fist until we all make it to heaven, until Sunday morning's bringdown. Self-conscious good vibes like love-handles poking through some 22-year-old's American Apparel T-shirt at some joint where you can only dance once you pay a $10 cover charge just to listen to some internet king's iPod." - Godspeed to Guardian (via Pitchfork)Montreal's opinionated Godspeed You! Black Emperor, who recently announced a new album which is streaming online, played two sold-out shows at Mohawk (on 10/9 and 10/10). George Lewis Jr. (aka Twin Shadow) @ Mohawk - 9/14/2012

As we mentioned a while back, during the month of September George Lewis Jr. (aka Twin Shadow) has been travelling through Texas as part of a tour in support of his sophomore album 'Confess'. Billed as "Twin Shadow Takes Texas", he's been to El Paso and Dallas, spent two sold-out nights in Austin, and then went on to Houston. He'll finish up in McAllen, TX on Monday night (tonight, 9/17). From GL Jr.:
"Some of our greatest shows in the states have been down in Texas. My favorite thing about it is that you drive long and hard to get to these places, and just beyond the constant van refuels, the violent scribblings on bathroom stall doors, the tumble weeds and scary small town authorities, are adoring fans, who just give you a lot of love. This is my way of saying thanks!"In addition to the shows, which include Sweden's Niki and the Dove as tour mates, he released a limited-edition 7" of "Run My Heart". From 4AD:
What better way to confess your support for your fans than to launch a pointed run of tour dates directed specifically at one of your most loyal group of supporters? It is with this in mind that Twin Shadow heads to the Lone Star state this September for half a dozen shows, plus in-store performances, radio appearances, etc. To further commemorate this Texas residency, Twin Shadow has created a limited edition 7" which will only be available in Texas at these shows and select Lone Star record stores. Here are some pictures of Twin Shadow (who have a new bassist) & Niki and the Dove from night one at Mohawk (9/15). More of them and a stream of the 7", below....

Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti @ Mohawk - 9/7/2012

Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti filled and thrilled The Mohawk on 9/7. I wasn't able to catch the openers Bodyguard and Moon Diagrams as I was over at The Moody Theater for Dead Can Dance and then off to Stubb's Slash before I went to Mohawk.

Tiger Waves @ Mohawk - 7/30/2012

Tiger Waves (an Austin Town Hall favorite) played Mohawk on Monday, 7/30 with Origami Ghosts, Western Ghost House, and Hello Caller (whose 'We Caught Fire' was KUT's Song Of The Day and who will have a new album out in October). Here are some pictures from that show.
Ten days earlier, Tiger Waves played Stubb's....
"On July 20th at Stubb's indoor stage, we were feeling the good vibrations, kicking up sand, and riding the surf sound of Whalers at their EP release show with Tiger Waves. Both of these indie bands have crafted a unique take on the 1960s surf rock sound and are making waves in the Austin music scene." [Austin Chronicle]Tiger Waves are now on tour and will be in New York this week, but hit the Austin stage again twice in the coming months. Catch them on 08/21 at Red 7 with Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin and again on 09/15 at Emo's East with Neon Indian.
