Active Child @ Mohawk - 5/4/2012

Active Child's tour with Balam Acab and Superhumanoids came through Austin earlier this month for a show at Mohawk (5/4), complete with lasers and fog machines. Brian Gray from Austin Town Hall spoke really highly of the show, complimenting Pat Grossi's vocal abilities in a live setting and the crowd's constant engagement. He also offers, "If you are on the fence about Active Child, go to a show."
Meanwhile, as others have hinted at in the past, Balam Acab, as great as he is recorded, may not be much of a live act: "But no matter the music, one guy, several sequencers, Macbook and an 808 do not captivate, especially on an outdoor stage with static lighting."
More pics and a video from the show below...

Twin Shadow in Brooklyn last week (more by David Andrako)

Brooklyn band Twin Shadow is set to release their second album, Confess, on July 10 via the 4AD label. The record was inspired by brush with death with main man George Lewis Jr.:
One winter I crashed my motorcycle , with a friend on the back. I shouldn't have been riding that day, but I was young and fearless of the black roads, fast and easy in my ways. As the bike slipped from under us my head filled with words. The slow motion moments of calm just after surprise and just before regret are bliss. I remember in that moment I wanted to say everything to him. How could I say everything in a split second? How could I bury my words in his heart?Check out the first released track from it, "Five Seconds," HERE. Twin Shadow are gearing up for a North American tour, which will pull into Austin on September 14 at Mohawk. Tickets go on sale Friday (5/11) at 10AM. All Twin Shadow tour dates and a flyer for the Mohawk show are below.I got a new bike and went to LA to record what is now called Confess...

King Buzzo of The Melvins @ Mohawk on 4/19

The Melvins came to The Mohawk on 4/19 and brought the loudness with gods of NYC noise-rock Unsane as part of their tour together. Did you go? Manage to score one of those Melvins/Unsane "cagematch" splits?
Same Sack provided local support. If the name isn't familiar, the faces might be. It's a (relatively) new project that includes King Coffey (Butthole Surfers) on drums, Craig Clouse (Todd) on bass, and Matt Turner (Rubble) on... well also on bass.
King Buzzo and crew played 14 songs (or maybe 15 - if you count the "Hung Bunny" & "Roman Dog Bird" medley as two songs - the printed set list was only labeled "LYSOL") to a packed house, and judging by the volume levels, probably to the rest of the neighborhood too. Melvins' Coady and Dale took over drum-duty during Unsane's set as Vinny Signorelli was not able to make the show.
More pictures and the Melvins' set list, below...

Megafaun @ Mohawk on 4/10/2012

As just mentioned on BrooklynVegan (where you can also download two tracks), Field Report is the project of Chris Portfield, the remaining ex-member of DeYarmond Edison who didn't go on to form Bon Iver or Megafaun. Field Report made their live debut at SXSW in Austin, where they played Hotel Vegan (pics of that HERE) and followed it with a tour with Megafaun. That tour brought the band back to Austin on 4/10 for a show at Mohawk with Dana Falconberry. More pictures from that show, below...

Stacy Dupree-King of Sucré @ Mohawk on 4/23/2012

Sucré is Stacy Dupree-King (of Eisley), Darren King (Mutemath drummer) and composer/producer Jeremy Larson. Their debut, A Minor Bird (Red Velvet), came out on April 10th and you can stream the entire album. TheOwlMag writes:
If we were able to select a soundtrack to play while we wistfully float into dreamland at night, A Minor Bird would be our musical accompaniment of choice....They just played two shows in Texas (Austin was 4/23, Dallas 4/24) with The Tontons....Larson's string arrangement and Stacy's angelic vocals throughout the single "When We Were Young" left us feeling entranced and reminiscing of the days of princesses and tea parties. We fell in love with soft meets funky vibe on "Chemical Reaction." Tracks such as "Troubled Waters" and "No Return" have us recalling early Björk, with its light and whimsical flare.
Sucré's A Minor Bird weaves Stacy King's airy lyrics with swelling string arrangements that continues to haunt us long after the album has ended. Make sure to catch Sucré touring this spring in support of their debut album.
Austin's Emily Wolfe kicked off the show Monday night at Mohawk. Pictures of all three bands from that one, below...

The Hold Steady @ Mohawk on 4/10

Craig Finn took a break from promoting his solo album and joined back up with The Hold Steady, who played as a 5-piece (no keyboard), for a few Texas shows earlier this month, the April 12th Spurs game included. Two nights before the game, and before a show in Dallas, the band rocked a very packed (and red-and-blue lit) Mohawk with locals The Happen-Ins. Check out more pictures from that Austin show (which was recorded and distributed), with the headliner's 22 song setlist, below...

Caroline Polachek of Chairlift @ Mohawk on 4/17

"After parting ways with third member Aaron Pfenning in 2009, Chairlift went back to working on new material as a duo. Wimberly said he and Polachek are very involved with every little piece of the puzzle that goes into making songs. On Tuesday, 4/17, the Caroline Polachek-led Chairlift, who were just here for SXSW, came back to Austin on tour with Nite Jewel (ditto) and Bell (who also plays in Chairlift). More pictures from that show, which took place at Mohawk, below...
"We started writing [Something] at the end of 2009, pretty much straight away when we finished our first album," he said. "We rented out a room in the back of an antique shop with a small window and a piano, brought a couple keyboards and were there for about eight months."
The tracks "Turning," "Guilty As Charged" and "I Belong In Your Arms" were produced by Chairlift but turned to producer Dan Carey (Hot Chip, The Kills) for the rest of the album." [College Times]

Har Mar Superstar @ Mohawk on 2/24

Sean Tillmann, AKA Har Mar Superstar, spent the last month in Austin recording an album and performing weekly at Mohawk with Marijuana Deathsquads. On 2/24 they wrapped up their residency with Poliça and Total Fucking Blood. You've seen pictures from WEEK ONE, WEEK TWO, and WEEK THREE. Here are the shots from week four (except for Polica which are in a separate post).
Poliça played some new songs, was extremely well received, and will be back in a few weeks for SXSW. Har Mar will be joining Father John Misty (AKA J. Tilman from Fleet Foxes) for a tour and putting the finishing touches on his new album.
Pictures from the last night of Har Mar's residency continue below...

Stephen Malkmus @ Mohawk on 2/22

On an unseasonably warm Wednesday (2/22), Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks came to The Mohawk with Nurses and TV Torso as part of their February tour.
They played right up to the 10:30 sound curfew, with a solid 15-song set list (which you can read in the pictures below), as well as two covers to round out the encore (REM's "Radio Free Europe" and Elton John's "Benny and the Jets").
This was one of the first outside shows in the newly-upgraded venue, which now has two additional viewing tiers overhanging the outside courtyard. From what I could see walking around, the new additions offer a lot more breathing room, as well as clear sightlines to the stage. SXSW will be a good test to see how the extra space improves the flow of the venue - but so far it looks like a pretty effective upgrade.
More pictures from the Jicks show below...

Har Mar Superstar takes a rest mid-set @ Mohawk on 2/15

3 weeks down, 1 night to go for Har Mar Superstar's February Residency at Mohawk (he's been in Austin recording his next album minus a trip to New Orleans for Mardi Gras). On 2/15 Har Mar played with residency mates Marijuana Deathsquads and a new opener Geoff Millions. Har Mar dug deep for this performance (as seen in the 4th to last pic). Pictures are in this post from that show.
Tonight (2/24) is the the fourth and last week of his residency, and the show moves from the inside stage to the outside. Along with that switch, Poliça (pronounced po-lisa) will be joining in the fun as special guest headliner - as well as Total Fucking Blood. As of this week, there are also two new viewing tiers for the outside stage (a result of the new construction to add 150-200 to the capacity)
Poliça features Channy Leaneagh (née Casselle), who has performed with Har Mar before as part of Gayngs, in addition to being a member of (now broken up) Minneaoplis faves Roma di Luna.
From SXSW's listing for Poliça's March 15th South-By show @ IFC/Vice:
POLIÇA began as a collaboration between fellow Gayngs' members Channy Casselle and Ryan Olson in June of 2011. By July they had completed 11 songs, made the key additions of drummers Ben Ivascu and Drew Christopherson, bass player Chris Bierdan, and headed to the studio. After Mike Noyce (Bon Iver) lent his voice on Lay Your Cards Out and Wandering Star, the record was brought to Austin, TX to be mixed with Jim Eno (Spoon). In a few days, the LP was completed and the band Poliça was formed. On stage, the original beats composed by Olson play amongst Channy's passionate vocals & an intense rhythm section, that lead to a description somewhere in the area of electro-r&b goth-pop.Polica is also playing a show at Hotel Vegan this year (more on that later).
The residency will definitely end on a high note (no pun intended - what with MJ Deathsquads and all). Ticket's are still available - get them while they last. Oh, and with the 30 degree temperature drop today (down to 41F tonight), and the high winds - dress warmly!
Pictures from the 2/15 show (as well as some of the beginning construction at Mohawk) below...
