Stephen Malkmus @ Mohawk on 2/22

On an unseasonably warm Wednesday (2/22), Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks came to The Mohawk with Nurses and TV Torso as part of their February tour.

They played right up to the 10:30 sound curfew, with a solid 15-song set list (which you can read in the pictures below), as well as two covers to round out the encore (REM's "Radio Free Europe" and Elton John's "Benny and the Jets").

This was one of the first outside shows in the newly-upgraded venue, which now has two additional viewing tiers overhanging the outside courtyard. From what I could see walking around, the new additions offer a lot more breathing room, as well as clear sightlines to the stage. SXSW will be a good test to see how the extra space improves the flow of the venue - but so far it looks like a pretty effective upgrade.

Pavement's Stephen Malkmus is on tour throughout February, with a stop at Mohawk tonight (2/22). With him will be Nurses and TV Torso.

Nurses at Antone's earlier this month (more by Tim Griffin)

Portland's Nurses were just in town to kick off their tour with The Mountain Goats at the sold out Antone's on 1/19. After that tour ends, they'll be opening some dates on the Stephen Malkmus tour and return to Austin when that tour hits Mohawk on February 22. TV Torso is also on the bill. Tickets are still on sale.

As announced back in November, The Mountain Goats (aka John Darnielle and band) are going on tour with Nurses this month, starting at Antone's on 1/19. Hopefully you got a ticket because the Austin show is now sold out. The tour continues in Houston on 1/20 (tickets are still on sale for that one). All dates are listed below.

John writes:

"One small word about these shows. For years bands have been pretty judicious about playing unreleased new material, because much of it becomes available online immediately, even when the new songs are still in fairly raw form. We, too, have gotten into the bad habit of holding new stuff back. We are done with that whole philosophy, though. I miss playing stuff that's unreleased & unrecorded, stuff that still stings fresh. So we got together and decided to tour the new songs before we even record them. I don't guess that we'll be touring all ten of the new songs I've written for the next album (eleven if you count one that's presently being herded back and forth between its cell & the chopping block), but be advised that if you're the sort of person who wants as many surprises as possible when you hear a new album, you should tread lightly around recordings of these shows, because we're not going to be holding the best ones back for the album release like people tend to do now."
