In case you missed it, Merge Records announced this exciting news in October:
We are excited to welcome Austin's A Giant Dog to Merge Records! The band recently recorded their third album with prolific producer Mike McCarthy and will release it in early 2016.A Giant Dog are one of many bands playing Good Vibrations II in December ("4 MORE DAYS OF PEACE LOVE AND PUNK"). Full lineup and more details below...
When asked how he feels about signing to Merge, singer-guitarist Andrew Cashen said, "I don't know. I'm thinking about cutting my hair into a man bun." Lead vocalist Sabrina Ellis proved more earnest, saying, "We are shitty people who do not deserve to be signed to Merge... But we are down."
A Giant Dog are known for their notoriously explosive performances and should not be missed. Asked to describe their live show, the band responded: "It's like watching Jerry Springer and then the TV explodes and suddenly the paragons of dysfunction in America are breaking apart your living room, pissing on your furniture, and making you the ham in a white trash sandwich." We'll see you in the front row!

T Bird and The Breaks @ Mohawk on 1/7
Spent some time going back and forth between venues on Red River/7th street on Saturday, the 2nd to last night of Free Week 2012. In addition to catching some sets at Beauty Bar, I was able to squeeze into a packed Mohawk during T Bird's and Grape St's sets. Had hoped to catch A Giant Dog - but Mohawk was at-capacity during their set. Next time...

T-Bird & the Breaks @ Fun Fun Fun Fest (more by Tim Griffin)
"Live music pioneer Graham Williams (founder of Fun Fun Fun Fest) started Free Week in 2003 when he was still booking shows for Emo's. According to Williams, who now operates Transmission Events, Free Week started "as a way to get people to come out during the slow time of the year when nobody was touring, as well as just bring something fun to do when everyone was still off work and the kids out of school for the end of the holidays."" [Culture Map]Free Week continues in Austin through 1/8. Have you seen any good free shows yet?
Previously listed as "special guest" due to their New Year's Eve show at Stubb's, it has been revealed that T-Bird & the Breaks headline the free Mohawk Outdoor show on Saturday (1/7). OBN IIIs, who just played Emo's, headline the inside room that same night and play Beerland one night earlier.
Looking for free beer too? Frock on Vintage has you covered. Head down there by 6pm each night for early sets of music and complimentary Corona.

OBN IIIs @ Emo's - 12/28/2011
"Perhaps the most important part of the Emo's legacy is this: It is in the DNA of dozens of clubs, bars and and public rooms that have opened since. Anything run by Transmission Entertainment, bars such as Liberty and the newest incarnations of Scoot Inn, Ruta Maya and Longbranch - all of them feature folks who were involved with Emo's in some capacity." [Austin360]As we mentioned they would, rising local heroes OBN IIIs played the third-to-last show at Emo's Jr. with Video and Wiccans (who were recently added to the lineup of Chaos in Tejas). Pictures from that 12/28 gig are in this post. Pictures from the very last show at Emos's, with Killdozer two nights later, are HERE.
OBN IIIs play two more shows this week as part of Free Week. More pictures from Emo's below....

OBN IIIs at Fun Fun Fun Fest (more by BBG)
Rising Austin band OBN IIIs have three local shows coming up soon, including one TONIGHT (12/28) at Emo's with Video and Wiccans. Tickets for tonight's show are still available, and it's one of the last at the venue, ending with Killdozer's show on 12/30.
The other two OBN IIIs shows happen on January 6 at Beerland with Pharoahs, Golden Boys, Church Shoes, and Teenage News and January 7 at Mohawk with Grape St, A Giant Dog, Ghostknife, Shivery Shakes, and DJ Richard Henry.
OBN IIIs will be featured on the second installment of the upcoming Matador singles series, and their 2011 record (available at eMusic) made the year end lists of a few of the people at Matador Records, as did Brooklyn's The Men, who will also be featured in their singles series too.
One of the lists OBN IIIs appeared on is Austin's own Gerard Cosloy's list, which also includes Wiccans, who open the Emo's show tonight. OBN IIIs also played Gerard's party at Beerland earlier this month. Did you catch it? How was that one?
Gerard's full end-of-year list is below...
