Fun Fun Fun Fest 2013 (more by Sarah Frankie Linder)
FFF

With less than 2 months to go, today Fun Fun Fun Fest release their FFF NITES lineup:

AUSTIN, TX (September 16, 2014) - FUN FUN FUN FEST (FFF Fest) is excited to announce today the lineup for FFF Nites, the after shows free to festival wristband holders, during this year's festival November 7--9, 2014, at Auditorium Shores. The Nites performances--including over one hundred FFF performing artists and a roster of artists playing exclusively during Nites--are only available to FFF Fest wristband holders; no tickets will be sold at the door.
If you're on the fence, this might be the final push. More than seventy (74 so far if I counted correctly) of the one-hundred-plus above mentioned artists are exclusive to FFF Nites, and access is FREE with your wristband.

Speaking of FUN FUN FUN passes, you can still get them here. Do it. You could try and wait until the Scavenger Hunt to score some free passes, but why risk it?

Check out more of the release including the full FFF Nites lineup below...

Little Dragon & Octopus Project @ ACL Live 8/31/2014

The last time we caught Swedes Little Dragon, they were playing one of our intimate SXSW day parties. Needless to say this was a much bigger show, in support of the group's lovely fourth album, Nabuma Rubberband. Locals The Octopus Project kept things just a little west of weird. Pictures from the whole show are in this post and more follow below...

Medicine closed out Saturday perfectly with their abrasive yet eclectically catchy guitar tones. When they abruptly announced that they had played their last song the crowd sprang to life, clapping and shouting loud enough that the powers at be had no choice but to let them do another song. Brad Laner launched into an extended tape gouging harmonic introduction to "Aruca," the single off their first album. The crowd danced along, hopping up and down and trying to recreate the reaction their heyday audiences had in their video for "The Pink." This experience sums up what Psych Fest gets right: an eager commemoration to a niche musical history and present that might otherwise be overlooked. - [Read The Horn]
Day 2 of Austin Psych Fest (5/3) was a good example of the wide variety of "psych" you get at APF, be it the pop Bolan-isms of Temples, reformed shoegazers Medicine's metallic white noise, Tuareg guitarist Bombino, Japanese rockers Mono, the groovy goth of The Horrors, or the pure muscle of Destruction Unit. We already published pictures of The Horrors set but we've got pics from the rest of those bands and lots more of Saturday's action in this post.

Pictures from day 1 are here. More from day 2 are below...

FPSF Day 2 - 6/2/2013

While Chaos reigned in Austin, another festival was happening over in Houston, with the Free Press Summer Festival which was celebrating its fifth year. Day 2 (6/2) featured TV on the Radio, Baroness, Social Distortion, Cat Power, Gogol Bordello, , Austin's UME and lots more and pictures are in this post.

Among the highlights: Houston Mayor Annise Parker stopped by to introduce gospel and soul legend Mavis Staples; and the excited crowd for Matt & Kim broke down the barricade which was later repaired with steel struts. That'll hold 'em.

Pics from day 1 are here, and more from Sunday are below...

Passion Pit @ The Backyard - 9/15/2012
Passion Pit @ The Backyard - 9/15/2012

Though earlier in the Summer they hit some bumps-in-the-road forcing show cancellations, Passion Pit have not lost their stride. They came to Austin and The Backyard in support of their latest album 'Gossamer' (released in July), and there was no shortage of energy for the show, both on stage and throughout the audience. Michael Angelakos' vocals sounded great, and the new songs translated extremely well live.

Their 17-song set, listed after the pictures below, included an even split between albums 'Manners' and 'Gossamer', with a few tracks from the 'Chunk of Change' EP rounding out the performance. If you haven't given 'Gossamer' a listen yet, you really should. I'm doing just that on Spotify as I write this.

Austin's own The Octopus Project and tour mates SoCal's Pacific Air (formerly KO KO) opened the show.

More pictures from all three bands and full Passion Pit setlist below.

YellowFever

The above-pictured tweet by Austin band YellowFever was posted in November. Last week they posted just two words to their Facebook Wall, and those two words were "Deep Time" which happens to be the name of the band opening for Octopus Project at Mohawk on 2/10 (it also says "formerly YellowFever" after their name on the bill). Legal problems solved.
