Johnny Marr / Big Fredia / Kurt Vile at FFF Fest, 11/8/2013
Marr and his backing trio played half a dozen tunes from his excellent new album The Messenger with confidence, precision, and plenty of rock & roll energy. Even then, "The Right Thing Right," "The Crack Up," "Upstarts," and "Generate! Generate!" earned a muted response. This crowd of 20-to-40-somethings came to hear the Smiths catalog and politely tolerated tunes as strong but not as familiar as those that influenced a generation.Fun Fun Fun Fest's 2013 edition happened last weekend, as you may know. We've posted a few pictures already, but here's a full set from Friday's kickoff (11/8) including Johnny Marr, Kurt Vile, Cut Copy, Big Freedia, Thee Oh Sees, The Walkmen, Quicksand, and more.
Marr thus treated that audience to superb renditions of "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before," "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out," and "Bigmouth Strikes Again," ending, of course, with the guitar orgy of "How Soon is Now?" and a cover of "I Fought the Law" by way of the Clash. - [The Austin Chronicle]

Sonos made their prescence known at SXSW this year with their own venue called "Sonos Studio", near Moonshine at 606 East 3rd Street (Red River and 3rd). The space hosted band performances, DJ sets, and lots of Sonos technology installations that guests could try out and play with. To quote the brand's own recap of the event:
deadmau5 and Kat Von D built their own functional speakers out of every day materials and played video games with fans while deadmau5 played his favorite music throughout the venue, Passion Pit, Chad Hugo, RDGLDGRN, The 1975, A-Trak, Skream, Jackmaster and Chrome Sparks performed nightly DJ sets, Jared Leto stopped by to experience the Studio, Rob Zombie held an after party for his new film The Lords of Salem, KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic broadcasted live each morning, Flula Borg hosted a luncheon, and there were top-notch performances by Erykah Badu, Surfer Blood, The Robert Glasper Experiment, Chelsea Light Moving ft. Thurston Moore, He's My Brother She's My Sister, Allah-Lahs, Cloud Nothings, French Horn Rebellion Party Ensemble, Tristen, Thomas Dybdahl, Robert DeLong, Chali 2na, Poolside, Sir Sly, Kitten, Yellow Red Sparks, WILDCAT! WILDCAT!, and Ólafur Arnalds. Last month, SXSW revealed its first round of artists for their 2013 festival, which happens from March 12-17, and now they've revealed a second announcement with way more artists. Chelsea Light Moving at Sled Island 2012 (more by Zach Pollack)
With Sonic Youth's future looking cloudy these days, Thurston Moore has turned some of his attention to his new group, Chelsea Light Moving . The band haven't played very many shows to date, but will make their Texas debut at the 35 Denton Music Festival which takes place March 7 - 10 in Denton, TX. Four-day wristbands and "fast track" passes are on sale now.
Chelsea Light Moving is one of a few recent additions to Denton 35's 2013 line-up and other just-added artists include Emeralds, Poolside, MC Antwon, White Lung, The Coathangers, Shannon and the Clams, Delicate Steve, Idiot Glee and Fossil Collective. Full list of announced acts is below.
