Fun Fun Fun Fest 2013 (more by Sarah Frankie Linder)

With less than 2 months to go, today Fun Fun Fun Fest release their FFF NITES lineup:

AUSTIN, TX (September 16, 2014) - FUN FUN FUN FEST (FFF Fest) is excited to announce today the lineup for FFF Nites, the after shows free to festival wristband holders, during this year's festival November 7--9, 2014, at Auditorium Shores. The Nites performances--including over one hundred FFF performing artists and a roster of artists playing exclusively during Nites--are only available to FFF Fest wristband holders; no tickets will be sold at the door.
If you're on the fence, this might be the final push. More than seventy (74 so far if I counted correctly) of the one-hundred-plus above mentioned artists are exclusive to FFF Nites, and access is FREE with your wristband.

Speaking of FUN FUN FUN passes, you can still get them here. Do it. You could try and wait until the Scavenger Hunt to score some free passes, but why risk it?

Check out more of the release including the full FFF Nites lineup below...

Sandwiched right in between Potty Mouth's tour with Perfect Pussy and their tour with Swearin', all three bands teamed up for a show in Austin at Red 7 last week (6/4), the only date on the tour to include all three on one bill. Opening was local Austin punks Feral Future, who made it a great quadruple bill. You may have also caught them in Austin with Perfect Pussy at Hotel Vegas in May. Pictures of all four bands are in this post.

I think I've finally recovered from another SXSW. I hope everyone had a great time at the BrooklynVegan events this year. Can't wait for next year. Meanwhile I just wanted to share the above two Instagrams which are two of my favorites I saw that came out of the BV events, and I hope you'll revisit the parties with us via one of our many photosets as well: SATURDAY 1 -- SATURDAY 2 -- FRIDAY 1 -- FRIDAY 2 -- THURSDAY 1 -- THURSDAY 2 -- WEDNESDAY -- FLATSTOCK STAGE -- INVISIBLE ORANGES.

BrooklynVegan SXSW Saturday Day Party - Red 7

Inside Red 7, the fresh-faced singer/guitarist Kip Berman of The Pains of Being Pure at Heart stealthily opened the sextet's set, playing a song alone on stage that could have been mistaken for part of the band's sound check in its tentative minimalism before the other five members took their places. Once assembled, they wasted no time in summoning a huge wall of sparkly pop-rock noise by melding shimmery keyboard work, subtly reverberating vocal effects, and liberal use of the whammy bar. The band occasionally slowed down to a more understated, post-punk tempo reminiscent of the Smiths, yet for the most part, on new single "Simple and Sure" as well as "Young Adult Friction," they produced a sugar rush of noise with just enough rock bite to keep things from feeling saccharine. "Now that we've taken a day to absorb a week of music at SXSW 2014, the Reverb staff has put together its picks of best shows. A clear stand-out is St. Vincent's set at Stubb's on March 12. With a full visual experience, dynamic guitar work and her usual vocal strength, Vincent set a high bar to beat throughout the rest of SXSW 2014. Other highlights included a refreshing and intelligent performance from Hospitality on March 13 along with Parquet Courts' buisness-like and blistering show at Red 7 on March 14." [Hey Reverb]

Save the Date

Like our official showcase, the free BrooklynVegan Austin day parties this year will take place at Red 7 on two stages: Thursday, March 13, Friday, March 14, and Saturday, March 15 (noon-6pm each day). Stay tuned for the full lineup announcements and more information coming soon, but meanwhile save the dates!

As always, we couldn't do it without our generous sponsors and this year we are happy to welcome with us Shiner Beers, Indiegogo, Nokia's streaming music app MixRadio, Esurance, Veri soda, and Marshall Headphones.

Follow @BVSXSW on Twitter and you can always check BrooklynVegan.com/SXSW for more information as we announce.

Yesterday, we announced that the 2014 BrooklynVegan official nighttime SXSW showcase will take place on Wednesday, March 12 at Red 7 Patio (611 E. 7th St. in Austin, TX). The punk-oriented lineup features Against Me!, Touche Amore, The Front Bottoms, Cheap Girls, Frameworks, Placeholder and a 7:30 special guest opening set by occasional actor and cult singer Harvey Sid Fisher. The Red 7 show is one of a few BrooklynVegan events at SXSW this year. Our metal blog Invisible Oranges will be announcing a metal showcase soon. We also have three day parties at Red 7 (3/13-15, lineups coming soon), and a BrooklynVegan/BV Austin-curated portion of the Flatstock stage on 3/15 with Austin artists Mother Falcon, S U R V I V E, and Bronze Whale.

Hospitality not only survived the "sophomore slump," they bettered their debut with the just-released Trouble which finds them expanding beyond their indiepop roots. The band's tour with fellow Brooklynites Air Waves hit Austin on Monday night (2/17) for a show at Red 7 with locals Modrag opening the night. Pics from the whole show are in this post.

If you missed the show you can watch Hospitality play a few songs from Trouble in the most recent edition of our BV Studio Sessions. More pics from Red 7 below...

Canadian punks Fucked Up, who we just caught in NYC playing the last-ever show at Brooklyn venue 285 Kent, made their way south for a few more US shows while they were on our side of the border, including an Austin stop at Red 7 this past Tuesday (1/28). The show was moved from its original location of Mohawk, due to the extremely cold temperatures we were faced with. Opening the show was very young Austin band Residual Kid, plus Dirt Cult-signed local punks Brain Attack (mems. of Wiccans and other bands). Pictures of the show are in this post.

Souleyman was busy this weekend, playing two days later in NYC. Photos from Thursday's show at Red 7 are below...

Unreal!" - Melody Dominguez

Bosnian Rainbows @ Red 7 - 5/29/2013
Bosnian Rainbows @ Red 7 - 5/29/2013

Austinist: At Fun Fun Fun Fest back in Austin this fall, you missed your first time slot and were rescheduled. But the surprise of the rescheduling made it really exciting. The audience had this, "Oh! They did make it after all!" sort of feeling. What was that like from the performer side?

Omar Rodríguez-López: Well, we were on our way to Austin and our van broke down. And so we actually missed our slot, and so we thought we weren't gonna be able to play, and we went to Austin anyways because, you know, we have friends there. So we went anyways and then the people from the festival said, hey we had a cancellation, there's a slot and so we said sure of course, so then we just went and we played. And it's a good example of something that could be seen as a failure: if you have this thing that's scheduled, and you're supposed to do your part and show up but then, the van broke down. And so you failed to meet your end of the bargain to show up, and you're like 'oh man, we missed that', and so you missed an opportunity. For somebody else that might be the end of the world, "oh we missed the opportunity to play". But we just said 'oh the van broke down that's what happened, so let's just go watch a movie anyways'. So we drove the extra five hours or whatever, just so we could go hang out with them and watch a movie. And through not worrying or not obsessing about it and not even seeing it as a failure, this whole other avenue opened up. And we were there, had we turned around we would not have even been there. We were there to be able to say 'oh sure we can play that spot'. And we went and we played without thinking whether people understood or not who was supposed to be playing or what happened to the original act that was scheduled. And it was cool you know, it was like a great example of the whole failure thing, because I thought it was like the best show of that leg of the tour.

Back in town and on time, Bosnian Rainbows featuring Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Teri Gender Bender brought their tour the heat to Red 7 last night (5/29) with Zorch who they play with again tonight in Houston to wrap up a 4-night-TX run.

Here are pictures from the Austin show. More below...

Ben Nichols @ Red 7 - 9/10/12
Ben Nichols @ Red 7 - 9/10/12

Ben Nichols, frontman for Lucero, came to Red 7 with Mike Herrera for the Bike Riders Southern Ride. Billed as "BIKERIDERS SOUTHERN RIDE... BEN NICHOLS SOLO TOUR! MUSIC, MOTORCYCLES AND TATTOOS!", it delivered on all three.

Herrera, best known for his bands MXPX and Tumbledown, opened the night and led the audience right to Nichols' door. Ben stepped through it, and as always when he's in Austin, he was at home.

After being introduced by Texas' own ink master Oliver Peck, Ben paused for a moment saying he had no idea [where to begin], which quickly got a call out from the audience for "100 Miles!". A quick glance and an "O.K." later he began. An hour and forty-five minutes flew by and it was done, with laughter, drinks, constant sing-alongs from the crowd, stage dives, and even a guest from the audience joining Ben for a song ('My Best Girl') to finish out the set.

The tour continues through Saturday 9/15, after which Ben rejoins Lucero for their world tour covering North America, Europe, The U.K., and Australia. Lucero will be back in Austin for Fun Fun Fun, and will close out the year in N.Y. and N.J.
