Ben Nichols @ Red 7 - 9/10/12

Ben Nichols, frontman for Lucero, came to Red 7 with Mike Herrera for the Bike Riders Southern Ride. Billed as "BIKERIDERS SOUTHERN RIDE... BEN NICHOLS SOLO TOUR! MUSIC, MOTORCYCLES AND TATTOOS!", it delivered on all three.
Herrera, best known for his bands MXPX and Tumbledown, opened the night and led the audience right to Nichols' door. Ben stepped through it, and as always when he's in Austin, he was at home.
After being introduced by Texas' own ink master Oliver Peck, Ben paused for a moment saying he had no idea [where to begin], which quickly got a call out from the audience for "100 Miles!". A quick glance and an "O.K." later he began. An hour and forty-five minutes flew by and it was done, with laughter, drinks, constant sing-alongs from the crowd, stage dives, and even a guest from the audience joining Ben for a song ('My Best Girl') to finish out the set.
The tour continues through Saturday 9/15, after which Ben rejoins Lucero for their world tour covering North America, Europe, The U.K., and Australia. Lucero will be back in Austin for Fun Fun Fun, and will close out the year in N.Y. and N.J.

Tragedy @ Red 7 - 5/4/2012

Portland d-beat greats Tragedy go in a slightly different, sludgier direction with Darker Days Ahead, the band's new and semi-suprise Billy Anderson-produced LP out now at your nearest merch table. The band is currently road-testing that material at dates across the US and Austin was the guinea pig on May 4th at Red 7, when Tragedy joined Screaming Females, Impalers, and Criaturas. Pictures from the show adorn this post.
Much like Tragedy, Screaming Females are on a tour of their own that crossed paths with the ex-members of His Hero is Gone. SF guitarist Marissa Paternoster who was recently ranked #77 in SPIN's "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time". Good for her, go to the shows, like Beauty Ballroom on June 1st, and watch her rip it.
More pictures of the bands from Red 7 below... With the exception of Criaturas - missed while covering over at Mohawk (sorry!).

Cedric Bixler-Zavala of At The Drive In @ RED 7 on 4/9

After an opening set by Zechs Marquise, At the Drive-In played their first show since 2001 (as it said on the show poster) at Red 7 in Austin last night (4/9). It was also the first in a series of pre-Coachella warm up shows that continue in Dallas (tonight) and then Marfa.
According to show promoter Transmission Entertainment, the surprise gig sold out in 11 minutes after being announced via Twitter the other day. In addition to all those packed inside, there were many listening from the alley outside. Though some complained that Omar Rodriguez Lopez seemed a bit out of it (update: his mother recently passed away), the band was generally high energy with Cedric hanging from the rafters of the newly refurbished club, and the crowd going insane. If you haven't seen it already, take a look at the setlist, along with more pictures from the Austin reunion show, below....

Red 7 (taken during Free Week) (more by Tim Griffin)

The club clears up some rumors. In their own words:
All of us here at Red 7 are flattered to know we're the occasional source of gossip. I mean, we get it. We closed down for a few weeks in December, threw in a couple of Playstations and some minor repairs, and now people are assuming we're leaving town just because Emo's moved off the block.Long live Red 7!Well, I'm sad Emo's left downtown. A lot of us cut our teeth there, and it was a great venue that helped shape Red River. So was Liberty Lunch.
At the same time, our friends at Beerland down the street just resigned their lease (long live Beerland!), The Mohawk is in the midst of building out a fancy new viewing deck and our neighbors at Empire Automotive have really been stepping it up on doing more live shows than before. We're excited to see a combination of new blood and old veterans investing their time, money and talent in this district, and we're even more excited to be a big part of it.
We don't have any plans on going anywhere. We aren't moving South of the River, and we aren't closing our doors. Why would we? Red River is one of the most important neighborhoods in Austin, and we're fighting to keep it here for the long haul. Starting with re-signing our lease.
In the meantime, we've made some improvements to the facilities and programming and have a lot of great shows (and a few surprises) in store for you in the near future, so stay tuned.
Speaking of Red 7, Frankie Rose and DIVE just announced a show there, and Braid is playing there during SXSW. Cloud Nothings play there later this month.
