The Darkness at Irving Plaza, NYC (more by Chris La Putt)

Last night (2/6), Irving Plaza was witness to call-and-response sing-a-longs with the audience, epic guitar solos played while riding a roadie through the crowd, and a trust fall into the congregation. And that was just one song. It could only be The Darkness. The Darkness play Stubb's tonight (5/25) and tickets are still available. The band have almost finished up their current North American tour which wraps up at the House of Blues in Dallas on Sunday (5/27) and tickets are still available for that show too. They then fly to Europe where they'll be tour openers for...Lady Gaga? It's true. All Darkness tour dates are below. This was the second of two nights at Irving, their first NYC shows in five years or so. (We have pictures from Saturday too.) It was also after that Superbowl ad thrust the band back into public conscious, but it didn't seem like anyone there had forgotten about them. This crowd -- which included Dee Snider -- was primed to rawk and frontman Justin Hawkins had them eating out of the palm of his hand. When he yelled "I wanna see some thumbs!" we instantly obliged. G-Side @ Stubb's

Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire didn't show up, but SPIN's 2-stage Stubb's lineup at SXSW this year included plenty of other great musical options. Here are some pictures. More below...

Action Bronson said in an interview that he would be playing Rachael Ray's SXSW party at Stubb's this year. That lineup is now out, and Action isn't on it, which is probably a better look for him anyway considering who is (Spank Rock doesn't seem to mind though, and I guess Jimmy Cliff is also on the billl...). I wonder how much Billy Gibbons is getting to play with her husband's band The Cringe, or maybe they're just all BFFs...
UPDATE: The RSVP link with the lineup seems to have been removed. Not sure if there's a new link.
In related news, Jimmy Cliff is also playing two other SXSW parties, and a show in Brooklyn and Coachella.

Robert Ellis & Caitlin Rose & Stubb's

Robert Ellis, who's about to head overseas for a European tour with Dawes, played a show at the Stateside at the Paramount on Friday night (2/3) with Shawn Jones. One night later Robert joined Caitlin Rose on stage for some Louvin Brothers covers at her packed Saturday show inside Stubb's (as you can see in the picture above). UPDATE: and now a video too (below).
Right before she got to Austin, Caitlin played a handful of shows with the Old 97's. Friday night Rhett Miller joined her on stage at Gruene Hall in New Braunfels to help her perform her own song "Shanghai Cigarettes." Watch the video of that, and some from Stubb's too, below...

"Thanks to everyone who came out to the @OHSNAPBenefit. The blackout on 6th St. was a huge bummer. Working on rescheduling... :(" - Ume
Oh Snap! Oh So Dark! (more by Tim Griffin)

As the above tweet implies, Ume were one of the bands that didn't get a chance to play the Oh Snap! festival on Saturday night due to power outage. The band has since also written on Facebook:
Thanks, everyone! We are so bummed we didn't get to play, but the festival organizers and all the bands still made it an awesome weekend! And props to Shakey Graves for the battery powered performance! Yes, we will be at SXSW and then Stubb's Outside April 7th... details coming soon!Though it doesn't say so on Stubb's website yet, we can confirm that Ume are opening for the Toadies that night at Stubb's, as are Boy + Kite. ($25 tickets are on sale).
Meanwhile Oh Snap! have scheduled a makeup show, or I should say "Blackout Party", at The Parish on February 10th. "We had several bands that couldn't play to close out our festival, so we are having another show!" and "Announcing Lineup Very Soon."
Ume don't begin touring with Cursive until February 12th, so maybe they'll be playing the blackout party too. Stay tuned for more info.

Social Distortion at MSG (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)

Breakout the pomade, Social Distortion is heading back out on the road this spring for a string of dates following their current, mostly/West Coast dates. Oddly enough, the month-of-shows in April/May mostly center around Canada and Texas, and include a show in Austin at Stubbs on May 6th with Riverboat Gamblers and Lindi Ortega. Tickets are on sale.
The tour follows the release of Social D's Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes from a year ago and the recently announced Social D iPhone app. All tour dates and their video for "Machine Gun Blues" is below.
Dr. Dog at Williamsburg Waterfront (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)

Like they did in November of 2010, Dr. Dog will play Stubb's on March 9, 2012, part of a two month tour that begins in early February. The band's new album Be The Void, is out via ANTI on 2/7. Tickets for the Austin show are on sale now.
Givers, who played their own 600+ capacity headlining show in Brooklyn this past week (while they were in NYC to play with Preservation Hall Jazz Band), open for Dr. Dog in Austin, and in Houston (Fitzgerald's), and in Dallas (Granada Theatre). All Givers dates are listed below.
Within the past month, Dr. Dog have released several trailers - clips of songs recorded live in the studio, teasing fans and making it just that much harder to wait for the new LP. The most recent featured "These Days". The band says it shows what kind of album they're going to make, "loud and raucous, but also melodic." Other trailers are "Big Girl" and "Heavy Light", and you can watch all three, along with a full song stream of new song "That Old Black Hole" and the Givers dates, below...
Cass McCombs at MFNW (more by Autumn Andel)
