The National, Thao ATGDSD @ Stubb's - 10/05/2013

Intellectual rock music is difficult to come by these days. Luckily, we have The National, a band defined by dark, sensible lyrics that actually make you think. On first listen, The National don't necessarily fit the profile of a big name act that appeals to large audiences, but in the live setting the band has a commanding presence. This has a lot to do with frontman Matt Berninger, a mysterious figure that dresses in dark clothing (usually a suit) and looks more like a college professor than the singer of a rock band. Berninger's distinctive baritone voice feels arid and tired, reminiscent of a weary world traveler. At Stubb's Berninger unleashed this voice and connected with the audience, eliciting the kind of wide-eyed focus you would give to a man sharing a strange and wonderful story. Backing up this powerful voice is the band, who solemnly play in a way that is both controlled and complex, providing the perfect build-ups and sweeping orchestral sound that could only mesh with a voice like Berninger's. The audience on Saturday night was treated to all of this as The National took them on a two-hour journey that spanned their musical catalogue. Chances are, The National won't play a venue as intimate as Stubb's the next time they return to Austin, and on Saturday night the respectful crowd of loyal fans were keenly aware of this.[The Horn]
The National, in Austin for Austin City Limits, played an after show at Stubb's on Saturday (10/5) with Thao Nguyen and The Get Down Stay Down. They played mostly song's off their latest album, Trouble Will Find Me, and dedicated a song to The Cure who were also playing ACL. Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), whose side project The Shouting Matches also played ACL and a show at Stubb's, joined The National for their last two songs, one of which he also contributes to on High Violet. Watch the video, along with the full setlist, pictures and other videos from the show, below...

The Gaslight Anthem

Led by vocalist Brian Fallon, the band's songs, heavily influenced (and endorsed) by the one and only Bruce Springsteen, create a paradox of accessible rhythms and beats, laced with complex lyricism. The themes are easy enough to follow, but Fallon must be the only contemporary vocalist who can write a song, pleading with the crowd to let him keep some of his life private ("Too Much Blood"), then convincingly sing another from a woman's perspective ("Here Comes My Man").
[Houston Press]
Like Band of Horses, The Gaslight Anthem toured their way to Stubb's in Austin after playing Coachella. The NJ band played the large Austin venue on Friday night (4/26), one night after hitting House of Blues in Houston, with Matt Mays. We've got some pictures. They continue below...

Waxahatchee @ Stubb's
Waxahatchee

Pitchfork Fest just announced their final 2013 lineup and not surprisingly it contains Waxahatchee whose amazing 2013 album they so wisely chose to champion.

As mentioned, Waxahatchee was just in Austin for some SXSW shows. Our own Andrew Sacher caught her at Holy Mountain and wrote:

Easily one of the most anticipated artists at this year's SXSW is Waxahatchee, whose new album, Cerulean Salt, just hit shelves and is driving a lot of people wild. And her live show lives up too. She played full band and stuck to the more rock-oriented songs and rock versions of softer tunes, and at least in the front of the room, the crowd was completely zoned in. "I loved Waxahatchee!" I excitedly said to someone at the show. "Yeah, everyone does," was her response. It's true.
Pictures in this post are from Waxahatchee's SXSW-Wednesday night NPR showcase at Stubb's (the one Nick Cave & Yeah Yeah Yeahs also played).

As also mentioned, Waxahatchee will be back in Austin in June for Chaos in Tejas for a show at The North Door on June 2nd with Iceage, Total Control, and Lower. That is definitely not a show to miss and tickets are still on sale.

More pictures from Stubb's below...

It has now also been confirmed that "On Friday, March 15, Kendrick Lamar will headline SPIN's annual musical bacchanal at the legendarily finger-lickin' Stubb's BBQ. We'll be revealing the rest of the lineup very soon, along with info about how consumers can win the chance to attend the exclusive, invite-only party."

Yeah Yeah Yeahs @ Union Pool recently (more by Greg Cristman)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs

"Yeah Yeah Yeahs will play the NPR Music's SXSW Showcase at Stubbs on March 13th, 2013. The official showcase will be available to audiences worldwide through live broadcasts on NPR member stations across the country and a video stream at NPR Music. Joining Yeah Yeah Yeahs on the bill is Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, who will open the evening with a special set. More artists and information about the performance to be announced soon at www.npr.org/music

Yeah Yeah Yeahs, naturally, have a new album coming soon too and are also playing Coachella. Watch a brand new teaser for "Mosquito" below...

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds

Dates in Dallas and the surrounding area right around SXSW indicated it, but now we have confirmation that Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds will indeed perform at the Austin festival. Look for the boys to hit Stubb's on March 13th as part of the NPR Showcase with more artists still TBA.

In addition, Cave will make another public appearance the day before:

On Tuesday, 12th March, in conjunction with his SXSW performance, SXSW Film and Music will host Nick Cave in Conversation with New York based author Larry Ratso Sloman. Sloman's numerous collaborators include Howard Stern, David Blaine, magic historian William Kalush and Anthony Kiedis of The Red Hot Chili Peppers, with whom he worked on the memoir Scar Tissue. Sloman also wrote an account of Bob Dylan's 1975 Rolling Thunder Revue tour, On the Road with Bob Dylan, and penned Reefer Madness, a history of marijuana use in the United States
Keep an eye on SXSW's site for more details.

Updated tour dates and a video for the latest new song to emerge, "Jubilee Street", are below.

Billy Corgan @ Stubb's - 9/27/2012
Smashing Pumpkins @ Stubb's - 9/27/2012

Tea shop owner Billy Corgan and Smashing Pumpkins played a sold-out and completely full Stubb's last night to kick off the American leg of their 'Oceania Tour'. Locals UME opened, and at the end of their set Lauren Larson thanked Billy and SP for making "a dream come true."

SP started off with "Quasar", the first track off of 'Oceania', and played through the entire album (full setlist below). Before jumping into what Billy referred to as "dusty" and classic Pumpkins, they cranked out a solid cover of Bowie's "Space Oddity".

The full performance lasted a little over two-and-a-half hours, including a special multi-song guest appearance by longtime friend and tourmate Jimmy Flemion of The Frogs. They covered T. Rex's "Jeepster" and Jimmy stayed on for "Thirty-Three" as well. Both were dedicated it to Jimmy's brother (and fellow Frog) Dennis who passed away in July.

Check out more pictures of UME and Smashing Pumpkins, along with SP's setlist and upcoming tour dates below..

Amanda Palmer @ Stubb's - 9/19/2012
Amanda Palmer @ Stubb's - 9/19/2012

It's been a great and interesting year for Amanda Palmer, of course not without its share of recent controversy, real or perceived based on differing viewpoints.

Everything seems to be resolved now, which is good news. Outcome: all previously-volunteer musicians are now getting paid and Amanda's new album just debuted at 10 on Billboard.

Amanda Palmer and the Grand Theft Orchestra, Jherek Bischoff, The Simple Pleasure, Ronald Regan, and presumably a group of local, paid (see above), volunteer musicians, came to Stubb's on Wednesday night (9/19), and played to a welcoming audience. I had to leave about 30 minutes in to go see Adam Ant at Emo's, and the Austinist's review show's me I missed a lot:

There were several highlights of this particular performance, including the new song "Bottomfeeder", where Palmer donned a jacket with a parachute train and jumped into the audience. As she was passed singing all the while towards the back of the venue, so was the muti-colored fabric, fanning out to almost completely cover the audience. It was orchestrated so well that she returned to the stage not a beat too soon, completely enveloping the crowd and tying them all to the song both physically and emotionally.

Yeasayer @ Stubb's - 9/6/2012
Daedalus @ Stubb's - 9/6/2012

Yeasayer came to Austin with Daedalus and played Stubb's on September 6. After moving some shows last week, they announced via twitter that they will be postponing their scheduled tour of Europe in the fall for "family reasons".

The Europe postponement will move things from the originally-scheduled September dates to November and December - which will likely give Anand Wilder some much-needed time with his new addition.

More pictures from Daedalus and Yeasayer (with a pic of Y's set list) at Stubb's below.

Yep, that's Slash @ Stubb's - 9/7/2012
Slash featuring Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators @ Stubb's - 9/7/2012

After finishing up over at ACL with Dead Can Dance, I stopped by Stubb's to catch legendary Guns -n- Roses axeman Slash. Couldn't get to the show early enough to catch openers Foxy Shazam, but I'll get the chance later this year at FunFunFun.

Currently on the Apocalyptic Love World Tour with Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators, Slash (aka Saul Hudson) shredded through a 20-song set list in the Austin heat, including many GnR favorites and some Velvet Revolver tracks too. Myles has some strong pipes, and the Conspirators kept everything turned up to "11." After catching Def Leppard at the beginning of the week, this made for a great end. \m/

They're off to New Orleans tomorrow (9/11), continuing the North American leg through the first few days of October. From there it's off to Europe and South America, and in February 2013 - India.

More pictures from the Austin show, the setlist, and full 2012 / 2013 tour dates, below...

Quiet Company @ Stubb's - 8/30/2012
The TonTons @ Stubb's - 8/30/2012
Bobby Jealousy @ Stubb's - 8/30/2012

On Thursday (8/30) Austin's own Quiet Company kicked off their fall tour at the Stubb's inside stage. They packed the house and pretty much went insane on stage (which was matched by the home-town audience's fervor) for their entire set with a quieter moment thrown in here and there, one being their cover of The Smiths' "Ask."

The TonTons (whose song 'Golden' was recently declared "Buzzworthy" by MTV) and Bobby Jealousy helped with the send-off. Bobby Jealousy are really killing it with their live shows; definitely worth checking out when they play Lambert's on 9/27.

Quiet Company will be on the road until their return for the ACL Festival. Pictures of all three, and QC's tour link below.
