Austin Psych Fest came to a close on Sunday (4/28) at Carson Creek Ranch with sets from pre-ZZ Top band Moving Sidewalks, Sweden's Goat, local veteran Roky Erickson, local not-veterans but greats The Black Angels, and others. Check out a full set of pictures from that day over at BrooklynVegan.
Austin Psych Fest 2013

Austin Psych Fest is less than a month away (April 26 to 28), and the full line up is out (on the flyer above and listed below) as are the breakdowns by day. As we mentioned previously, this year it's being held at Carson Creek Ranch (about 20 minutes from downtown) and offers overnight camping -- which is a pretty big change from previous years.
This year's line-up is pretty amazing, featuring Deerhunter, Os Mutantes, Silver Apples, Sweden's GOAT, Billy Gibbons' pre-ZZ Top band Moving Sidewalks (who played NYC recently), Roky Erickson, Clinic, Black Mountain, Black Rebel Motorcyle Club, Black Angels, Tamaryn, Raveonettes, Warpaint... and tons more. Tickets and Weekend Passes are on sale now. See which artists are playing which day below...

In a time when the sounds of the late '60s are highly influential on modern day indie rock, it's great to see many of those classic bands coming back for tours to give their fans who were too young or not even born yet a chance to see them. The Zombies are one of those bands, and I got the chance to see them in NYC back in 2011, which was great, but a part of me always wished they'd actually tour with one of the newer bands they influenced. Well, that's finally happening, because it was just announced that Elephant Stone will be heading out as a support act with The Zombies for a few dates this March. The US dates that the two bands are playing together are all in Texas, and they include the Austin Psych Fest SXSW showcase on March 16 at Brazos Hall. The other two TX dates happen on March 13 at Kessler Theatre in Dallas and March 17 at Fitzgerald's in Houston.
While The Zombies are in Austin, they'll be playing other SXSW shows, including one of the just-mentioned Waterloo Records free day parties. They play the one on March 16 with Ra Ra Riot, Indians, Mikal Cronin, Dawes, Fidlar, and Civil Twilight. Zombies go on at noon.
These shows all happen before Elephant Stone heads out on tour with The Black Angels and Allah-Lahs (Elephant Stone frontman Rishi Dhir has played sitar in Black Angels) and that tour brings all three bands to Austin at the end of April for Austin Psych Fest. Elephant Stone also have dates in Dallas (2/24) and Denton (2/24) before Psych Fest.
A list of all dates, a stream of Elephant Stone's new album, and a classic Zombies track stream below...

Earlier this month, Austin Psych Fest announced that their 2013 festival will go down from April 26 to 28 at TBA location. They've since revealed that it will take place in Carson Creek Ranch, "a scenic 58 acre ranch, rich in history, nestled on the banks of the Colorado River in Austin." They've also revealed the initial lineup for the festival, which includes Deerhunter, The Black Angels, Boris, Spectrum, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Clinic, Warpaint, DIIV, King Khan & BBQ Show, Goat, Tinariwen, Black Mountain, The Soft Moon, Black Bananas, White Fence, Elephant Stone, and many others. Weekend passes for the festival are on sale now.

Scenes from Fun Fun Fun Lucky Lady Bingo via Adi Anand's Instagrams 7/11/2012

While we've had some teasers in the last few weeks - Wednesday night was the night for BINGO - and the full Fun Fun Fun Fest reveal.
On 7/11 (Happy Slurpee Day!) Fun Fun Fun held their bingo-to-reveal-the-artists event, and while we already knew about Run DMC reuniting and some others, there were quite a few surprises in the massive list of musical acts and comedians announced (Public Image Ltd., Youth of Today, De La Soul, X, Bob Mould, Saul Williams, and Hannibal Burress to name a few).
The headliners (in addition to the aforementioned Run DMC reunion) are an electic-but-looked-forward-to group: Santigold, Refused, and for Comedy David Cross.
Three-day and PIP passes go on sale on Thursday at 10AM CST and will no doubt move fast. Get them here once the clock passes 9:59...
See the full line-up below.

Though Beauty Ballroom actually opens on Friday with a show by rapper Kendrick Lamar, the "grand opening" is next weekend, and now that grand opening is even more grand. This sums it up:
GRAND OPENING WEEKENDStay tuned for some more big Daniel Johnston news soon too.The Beauty Bar brand expands eastward to Riverside with a 700 capacity venue, The Beauty Ballroom. January 27 & 28 marks the Grand Opening weekend for the new east-side venue, with performances by Theophilus London, Treasure Fingers, L.A.X & a very special performance by This Ambitious Orchestra, covering the hits of David Bowie & Elvis.
The Beauty Ballroom features a 500-cap dance floor and 200-cap balcony with VIP seating options, table service & two karaoke rooms. The Ballroom boasts two full bars (one upstairs and one down), as well as a full production light and sound.
The new location promises to to be one of Austin's premier live music clubs focusing on a national range of talent, while still offering the eclectic lounge feel of the The Beauty Bar brand.
The Grand Opening weekend kicks off 1/27 with a classic Beauty Bar dance party, featuring Theophilus London & Treasure Fingers w/ local dance band L.A.X, Vegas Banger & Rickey Jean Francois. Tickets are $16 and can be purchased HERE.
Saturday, January 28 continues with a spectacle not to be missed. This Ambitious Orchestra presents The King & The Thin White Duke. The orchestra teams up with Lady Circus & Bro Circus to cover timeless songs from Elvis & Bowie, featuring a parade of Austin Singers including Daniel Johnston, Mike Weibe (The Riverboat Gamblers), Alex Maas (The Black Angels), Christina Marrs (Asylum Street Spankers), John Wesley Coleman, Jonathan Terrell (Not In The Face), & more. Tickets are $7 and can be purchased HERE.
Speaking of the Black Angels, they also just announced (and are playing) Psych Fest 2012 which is also taking place at Beauty Ballroom (and Emo's East).

We knew the dates (April 27th - 29th), but now The Reverberation Appreciation Society and The Black Angels have released the initial lineup poster for the 5th annual Austin Psych Fest and it looks aswesome as usual. As mentioned on BrooklynVegan, this year's fest will take place at Austin's two newest big venues, Emo's East and Beauty Ballroom right next door.
Emo's East is now the only Emo's since their Red River location closed on 12/30, and the Beauty Ballroom is (hopefully) having their rescheduled Grand Opening on January 27th (with Theophilus London and Treasure Fingers) and continuing on January 28th.
APF will feature around 60 bands over the three day, two venue event. About 40 are included in the poster above (and listed below), with another 20 or so to be announced in March. Announced bands include the Black Angels (who played Emo's East on New Year's Eve), the Black Lips, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Dead Meadow, Olivia Tremor Control, Wooden Shijps, and many more. Weekend passes go on sale this Saturday (January 21st) at 12pm CST at austinpsychfest.com.

Hotel Vegas, located at 1500 East 6th, are hosting a grand opening celebration through Saturday, December 3rd. Full Details below:

The press release says it all (well, most of it):
BEAUTY BAR'S HEADING EASTGrupo Fantasma tickets are on sale.
The Beauty Ballroom opens New Years Eve with Grupo FantasmaAfter 5 years at its current location on 7th St and Red River, The Beauty Bar brand is expanding to a second location, a 700-capacity venue located at 2015 Riverside, on the SE corner of Royal Crest and Riverside.
Beauty Bar founder Paul Devitt and Frank Hendrix from Emo's are joining forces to bring this exciting new venue to Austin. "Frank approached me this summer about his plans to lease a boarded up nightclub near the new Emo's. A month later he asked me if I'd be interested in partnering up" said Devitt. "We became friends when I opened on 7th Street and Frank has always liked the brand."
The Beauty Ballroom will feature state of the art light and sound, a 500-cap dance floor and 200-cap balcony. This second, new Beauty Bar location promises to be one of Austin's premier live music venues with a focus on booking more national and international touring acts while still offering the lounge feel and Beauty Bar aesthetic that patrons around the country have fallen in love with.
"We are really excited about the new venue on Riverside. From the layout of the building to the live production specs to the signature paint job and decor, we are really putting a lot of thought into this venture and we hope to bring Austin something a little different from the standard music venue experience." - Beauty Bar partner Bart Butler.
December 31, 2011, The Beauty Ballroom makes its grand debut with a special New Years Eve performance from longtime Beauty Bar compatriots and Grammy Award winning artists Grupo Fantasma, along with Maneja Beto and DJ Chorizo Funk. In addition, the show will be filmed and recorded for inclusion in the bands upcoming live CD/DVD release. For more information visit http://thebeautybar.com/austin
What the press release doesn't mention is that Beauty Bar's current location on Red River is, if the rumors are to be believed, closing after SXSW this year. Emo's closes its Red River location even sooner. Emo's Inside will host its last show on 12/30 of this year.
Emo's East, or "the new Emo's" as they call it above, is having a New Year's Eve party with The Black Angels, Wooden Shjips and Ume. Tickets are on sale.
