Boston's Quilt played early on Elevation, and not a ripple in the water came from their laid-back soft psych. They would be infuriating to see in a club on a Saturday night, but against the scenic backdrop of Carson Creek, they were appropriately pleasant. If one's learned anything from SXSW, going hard during the day can sometimes kill the momentum, and Quilt were a mid-afternoon reminder that there was a whole day - a whole weekend too! - ahead of them. - [Austin 360]
Austin Psych Fest returned to Carson Creek Ranch for the 2014 edition edition got off to a hazy start last Friday (5/2) with sets from Black Angels, Black Lips, Quilt, Zombies, Graveyard, Fresh & Onlys, Dandy Warhols and many more. Pictures from their sets, and more, are in this post.

Pics from Liars' headlining set are up over at BrooklynVegan. We'll have pics from Saturday and Sunday up soon. Meanwhile, more pics from APF day 1 below...

Lou Reed

One of this year's anticipated SXSW events is the official Lou Reed tribute which will happen on Friday, March 14 at the Paramount Theatre from 7:30 PM to midnight. Richard Barone and Alejandro Escovedo, organized the event which will also feature appearances from Susanne Vega, Garland Jeffreys, Bobby Bare, Jr., The Fauntleroys, The Baseball Project, Louise Goffin, Cindy Lee Berryhill, Cheetah Chrome, Jesse Malin, The Black Lips, and Sharon Needles, all performing with an ace house band.

Barone, who used to front '80s Hoboken pop band The Bongos, just released a cover of The Velvet Underground's "All Tomorrow's Parties" and you can watch the video (using films by legendary NYC underground filmmaker Jonas Mekas) below...

Fun Fun Fun Fest

The best part about Austin's annual good time known as Fun Fun Fun Fest is diversity. While punk and metal are driving the tattoo-sleeved set nuts on the Black Stage (pics HERE and HERE), there is an entirely different festival going on at some of the other stages - legendary MCs to movie star cameros, punk legends to some of the best indie bands on the come-up. .

In this post are another set of pics from day one, this time from photographer Glen Brown, including shots of Black Lips with Val Kilmer and Rooney Mara (part of a Terrence Malick movie shoot, more HERE), Against Me!, and Run DMC, plus X, Not In The Face, Dum Dum Girls, Cursive, Diamond Rings, Sharon Van Etten, more Napalm Death, more Converge, Astronautilus, Bob Mould, and Tomahawk.

Val Kilmer

To quote one YouTuber, "As part of the Terrence Malick movie being filmed in Austin, here's Val Kilmer acting "drunk" using a chainsaw on a speaker and cutting his own hair off during a performance with the Black Lips at Fun Fun Fun Fest 2012 (with Rooney Mara and Michael Fassbender on stage)." Black Lips

Austin Psych Fest is finally here and like any festival with a large number of bands, it's not without its casualties:

Unfortunately the Intelligence had to cancel their tour, and will no longer be playing the festival. They will have a new album out in 2012, look out for it!

Due to a situation out of the band and festival's control, ... And You Will Know Us By The Trail of The Dead will no longer be able to perform their set at Austin Psych Fest. Our best wishes to the Trail of The Dead and hopefully we'll have them back for 2013, stay tuned...

While those cancellations are a bummer, the festival has since added names like Thee Oh Sees, Meat Puppets, and many more to their venerable roster. Check out the full schedule below, and order your tickets or weekend passes.

Austin Psych Fest officially kicks off on Friday (4/27) but had its first event, a screening, on Monday (4/23) and meanwhile has been hosting some pre-parties which continue tonight (4/26) with Indian Jewelry, Christian Bland and The Revelators, The Wolf, Slow Motion Rider, Cerise, Chief Nowhere, and Rishi at Red 7. Entry is free with your ASF week pass or $15 at the door.

Full schedule of Austin Psych Fest events is below.

Austin Psych Fest

We knew the dates (April 27th - 29th), but now The Reverberation Appreciation Society and The Black Angels have released the initial lineup poster for the 5th annual Austin Psych Fest and it looks aswesome as usual. As mentioned on BrooklynVegan, this year's fest will take place at Austin's two newest big venues, Emo's East and Beauty Ballroom right next door.

Emo's East is now the only Emo's since their Red River location closed on 12/30, and the Beauty Ballroom is (hopefully) having their rescheduled Grand Opening on January 27th (with Theophilus London and Treasure Fingers) and continuing on January 28th.

APF will feature around 60 bands over the three day, two venue event. About 40 are included in the poster above (and listed below), with another 20 or so to be announced in March. Announced bands include the Black Angels (who played Emo's East on New Year's Eve), the Black Lips, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Dead Meadow, Olivia Tremor Control, Wooden Shijps, and many more. Weekend passes go on sale this Saturday (January 21st) at 12pm CST at austinpsychfest.com.
