Turquoise Jeep @ Red 7 - 5/4/2013
Turquoise Jeep, who are no strangers for taking their show off YouTube and onto the road, brought their tour through Austin for a show at Red 7 on May 4 with Kosha Dillz. Pictures of all the smashin' and bangin' are in this post.
Turquoise Jeep, the YouTube rap crew behind viral hit "Lemme Smang It", are no strangers to Austin where they've appeared, in part thanks to their fans at Transmission Entertainment, at Fun Fun Fun Fest and at Mohawk on New Year's Eve with Big Freedia. Now on tour again, the band, who are in Illinois as I type this, will make their way back to Austin for a May 3rd show at Red 7. All dates and their latest video, "I Want Pie", below...

THE DORITOS STAGE (photo by ceo_lex)
On the downside, though, came a sinking feeling that SXSW has gotten away from its origins of touting independent and unsung musicians.Snoop Dog of course wasn't the only artist who performed on tha stage - it was busy all week (though I never personally made it over there, but did walk by it a lot). Video of Turquoise Jeep playing on it, below...
Jay-Z got a jump on things with an American Express-sponsored concert the day before the music fest began, but while SXSW's equally hopping (and bigger-moneyed) multimedia conference was in high gear. His presence seemed to set the bad tone: More mainstream rappers than ever tried to cash in on the conference's corporate marketing side; more mainstream-rap-loving, high-fiving college spring breakers attended; and those extra days and extra hard-partiers meant more litter, filth and, yes, vomit on the streets by fest's end.
Lil Wayne, the newly paroled T.I., Nas and 50 Cent with special guest Eminem all crashed the party. The most shameless -- and quite literally the cheesiest -- display of corporate schilling by a rap star came from Snoop Dogg, who performed for the (Pepsi-owned) Doritos under a four-story faux vending machine stocked with the chipmaker's product.

Among the confirmed are names like Built to Spill, A$AP Rocky, Cults, Yelle DJs, Tycho, Purity Ring, Deerhoof, Chairlift, Ceremony (who is also playing the BV/POTR show), Cloud Nothings, and many many others. Flyer for the show and full lineup is below. Stay tuned for more announcements, including who that mystery "?????" is.
"Seeing Killdozer at Emo's, thinking the last 20 years didn't happen. It was all a dream and I still have hair." - King Coffey
It's New Year's Eve! Great shows tonight include Russian Circles at Red 7, The Black Angels at Emo's East, Willie Nelson at ACL Live, and Big Freedia/Turquoise Jeep at Mohawk (that's TJ pictured above). Grupo Fantasma is playing Club De Ville instead of Beauty Ballroom, and sadly nobody is playing Emo's Inside because last night Killdozer closed down that club forever. Check out a Statesman article on the topic that includes interviews with the club's former staff. Stay tuned for our pictures from the final nights, and R.I.P. Emo's.
Speaking of last night, it's when BrooklynVegan posted their collective list of favorite albums from 2011. Check that out.
Party hard tonight, but then rest up for Free Week.
Big Freedia @ FFFF6 in November (more by Tim Griffin)
Big Freedia recently played the Mohawk - a Fun Fun Fun Fest afterparty - after bringing Azz Everywhere to the festival proper earlier that day (and became BFFs with Ryan Gosling in the process). Check out more pics from Freedia's Fun Fun set HERE (we missed the Queen Diva's late Mohawk set, but we heard it was packed beyond belief in the inside room where it took place).
Turquoise Jeep also made an even more rare appearance at Fun Fun Fun Fest Fest 2011 (in the comedy tent). We missed that too, but heard rave reviews about the Youtube sensations and so are excited for the chance to not-miss-them 'Smanging it' this time around.
Check out videos of both below...
