Warpaint in NYC in June (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Los Angeles indie crew Warpaint have been touring a lot this year in support of their most recent album. They're hitting the road in August and then again in October, and they'll be coming through Texas twice. They'll stop by for a non-tour date at Utopia Fest (in Utopia, TX) on September 13, which will also feature GZA, Father John Misty, Cold War Kids, Dan Deacon and Kishi Bashi, among others (full lineup on flyer below). Tickets for the fest are on sale now.
Warpaint will then close out their October leg with a show in Dallas at South Side Music Hall on October 22. Tickets for the Dallas show aren't yet on sale but they should be up soon via the venue's website.

The National @ The Moody Theater - 4/22/2014
The dull roar opening "Bloodbuzz Ohio" rose the crowd in immediate recognition, yet the group kept the song reigned in and continued the build through newer material "Don't Swallow the Cap" and the piano-led "Hard to Find" as well as High Violet's "Afraid of Everyone" and an exquisitely pained "Conversation 16." The first cathartic swell didn't break until 10 songs in, with the uproar of "Squalor Victoria," which reset the performance as Berninger smashed the mic stand into the stage and stormed manically from end to end.The National wrapped up their three-night run with Warpaint in Austin at ACL Live at Moody Theater last night (4/23). You already saw pictures of night 1, and here's a set of night 2. The setlists were pretty similar from night to night, but for anyone who went multiple nights there were some differences. Only night 2 got "Anyone's Ghost," "Heavenfaced" and a few others, and only night 3 got "Demons," "Looking for Astronauts" and a few others then too.
That release is Berninger's forte, but it's the band and frontman's build to it that makes the National beloved and their shows powerful enough to carry three nights in one of Austin's largest venues. The singer's raw in performance, peeling back a vulnerability and insecurity in open wounds. He draws the crowd into this naked susceptibility so that the relief when the emotion finally shatters rivets and razes the entire audience. [Austin Chronicle]

Matt Berninger of The National takes a breath @ The Moody Theater on 4/21/2014
The National brought their tour with Warpaint to Austin for their first of three great double bills at ACL Live at Moody Theater last night (4/21). Like other shows on this tour, The National did a pretty good job of mixing it up between their last few albums, hitting tracks like Alligator's "Abel," Boxer's "Squalor Victoria," High Violet's "Conversation 16" and their newest, Trouble Will Find Me's "I Need My Girl." Pictures of the show are in this post.
The National and Warpaint do it again at ACL Live tonight (4/22) and Wednesday (4/23). Both sold out. More pictures and The National's setlist from night 1 below...
Warpaint open for the National at ACL Live Monday and Tuesday and Wednesday night (4/21-4/23). Can't make it? Check the ladies out in the much more intimate setting of Waterloo Records Tuesday at 1pm (long lunch break?). Flyer above.

Robert Levon Been of BRMC at Austin Psych Fest - 4/26/2013
Austin Psych Fest 2013 happened last weekend (April 26 - 28) at Carson Creek Ranch which looks like could be a permanent home for the annual event. The idylic big sky setting was a good fit for the music that often aimed for the stratosphere (and beyond). Friday night's kickoff (4/26) featured sets from Raveonettes, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Tamryn, Acid Mothers Temple, Tinariwen and more. A full set of pics are available at BrooklynVegan and if you haven't checked out our set of Psych Fest portraits, please do so.
Austin Psych Fest 2013
Austin Psych Fest is less than a month away (April 26 to 28), and the full line up is out (on the flyer above and listed below) as are the breakdowns by day. As we mentioned previously, this year it's being held at Carson Creek Ranch (about 20 minutes from downtown) and offers overnight camping -- which is a pretty big change from previous years.
This year's line-up is pretty amazing, featuring Deerhunter, Os Mutantes, Silver Apples, Sweden's GOAT, Billy Gibbons' pre-ZZ Top band Moving Sidewalks (who played NYC recently), Roky Erickson, Clinic, Black Mountain, Black Rebel Motorcyle Club, Black Angels, Tamaryn, Raveonettes, Warpaint... and tons more. Tickets and Weekend Passes are on sale now. See which artists are playing which day below...
